We are on day 13 of our tour and now have a moment to fill you in on our happenings for the past fortnight (almost). Apologies for not updating you all sooner, but internet access is in short supply in this part of the world, and sloth like at best?! We set off from Cape Town on 4th August on our tour. There were only 5 of us for the Cape Town - Jo’burg leg - we were joined by 3 very funny, young Aussie girls, who kept us entertained for the long drive days we had. The first day was a solid slog of driving - leaving Cape Town at about 8, stopping a couple of times through the day to pick up lunch, and grabbing pizzas before driving til about 11pm, where we pulled ... read more

The Bookbus is a UK charity, very small and started about 2 years ago. At the moment they have a bus based in Livingstone and an ex overland truck based in a refugee camp near the border with Congo. In Livingstone the bus is based at a place called the Grotto, it is an old colonial house with large garden and owned by a Kiwi. The grotto also has the occasional overland trucks staying. Our accommodation is in tents, cooking is done outside and we use the pool house as the office. There was about 6 volunteers at anyone time, all from the UK, Kelly manages the project in Zambia, it her second season which runs for about 6 months of the year until the rainy season start in October. Usually the Bookbus goes to a ... read more

Many sore heads for the early start this morning. The most ridiculous border crossing yet. We are only about 30mins from the border so have stamped out of Botswana by 6:30am, we then drive the short distance to the river where we join the queue. There is only one ferry going back and forth the 1km crossing and cars seem to take priority. We are only truck number 2 but that doesn't stop an intrepid truck trying to push in, Jon stands in front of their truck and even wrestles the driver for a while, they are then noticed and the truck is sent to the back. It's a scenic sun rise and there are hippos around but we have to be careful about photos as it is still a border. We finally get on the ... read more

We set out on our journey 5 days ago... although it seems much longer than that... it was hard to say goodbye to a few people at the hostel, people that make us laugh every day with their insane personalities... but we will see them again, so after a few hugs we took off... our friend Jama, who is babysitting our things, drove us to the station on his day off- which was great. We found our way through the busy Joburg bus station and joined the line- thinking that we would need to be up there right then and there- we were wrong. Africa time struck again... we sat in line for ages, feeling the weight of our bags slicing into our backs and shoulders. Finally it was time to board the bus. Intercape. Joburg ... read more

After leaving the tour, I had a few days to kill before starting my next project so went to a place called Jungle Junction which is on a small island in the middle of the Zambezi river. It is about a 50kms drive and the transfer shuttle was a Ute and involved sitting in the back with 5 other people and all our luggage, a great way to travel. We then transferred to mokoro's for a short crossing to the island. One side of the river is Zimbabwe and the side is Zambia, but Bovu is Zambian territory. The accommodation consists of small open sided huts on stilts dotted along the shoreline, they have a bed with mosi net, table & chair. There is also a bar hut and a library/dining hut where everyone gathers in ... read more

Zambia Our first night was spent in Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi and some much needed grocery shopping at Shoprite - the South African supermarket chain - getting the neccessities like water, chocolate and chips. Another long day of driving and we made it through the border to Chipata to a campsite called Mama Rulas. Here we saw New Zealand play their final World Cup game - a good effort again. Not bad for such underdogs to come out undefeated out of their first World Cup showing in 27 years. We heard that more than 2.2m people in New Zealand had got up at 2.30am in the morning to watch the game. Not bad! We then had one more full day on the road to Lusaka, the capital of Zambia before arriving at our final ... read more

Since my last blog, and after 4 days, Tracey has now been reunited with her backpack and everything is in order! We were expecting it to arrive in Vic Falls on day 3 however after several emails from Tracey to J'burg lost property we received a reply to expect it the following day. Success at last. Just knowing that it has been located was enough for us to celebrate. So the next day we were picked up by our "taxi" driver (a local) by the name of Dickson to take us to the airport. We were both very surprised when Dickson suddenly pulled up to halt and turned the taxi around as to our astonishment there were at least 3 elephants right on the side of the road grazing on acacia. Only in Africa! Dickson turned ... read more
