Background: The territory of Northern Rhodesia was administered by the South Africa Company from 1891 until it was taken over by the UK in 1923. During the 1920s and 1930s, advances in mining spurred development and immigration. The name was changed to Zambia upon independence in 1964. In the 1980s and 1990s, declining copper prices and a prolonged drought hurt the economy. Elections in 1991 brought an end to one-party rule, but the subsequent vote in 1996 saw blatant harassment of opposition parties. The election in 2001 was marked by administrative problems with three parties filing a legal petition challenging the election of ruling party candidate Levy MWANAWASA. The new president launched a far-reaching anti-corruption campaign in 2002, which resulted in the prosecution of former President Frederick CHILUBA and many of his supporters in late 2003. Opposition parties currently hold a majority of seats in the National Assembly.

Over the falls Africa » Zambia » Livingstone By Tamsin March 27th 2007 Tamsin Sebba Tue 27th We had a ferry crossing into Zambia. The crossing is the only place in the world where 4 countries meet. They are Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana. We luckily had our visa’s wavered but the police stopped us further up the road and they wanted s [View Full Entry]

Adrenaline blog

 Africa » Zambia » Livingstone
Hello All Welcome to my adrenaline page! I know it has been forever since I have written a blog and I should really be filling you in on my life for the past 6 months....and I will I promise...just thought I should close this chapter first! To be honest I thought I had already published this entry...ooops! So I decided that January was my month of adrenaline....or at least it was the start of my adrenalinejunkiness! I am actually wishing that I could have gone skydiving as well but the money situation didn't’t quite allow for it. Oh well another time! [View Full Entry]

THE BRIDGE!!!

Me getting tied in

No trip to Southern Africa would be complete without a visit to Victoria Falls. We had the choice of visiting the falls from either Zambia or Zimbabwe (or both). Due to visa costs and other recommendations we chose the Zambian side and did not regret it. Livingston is a great town, it felt like we were in Africa again. The falls did not disappoint at all, they were incredible. Hey, I think I can even use the word awesome in it's true context. They are 1.7km wide, 108m high and have an average flow of a million litres per second. Yes, [View Full Entry]

Victoria Falls
With water this time!
After travelling through Muslim countries and countries where dress was fairly conservative, Karen commented as she left the hotel room in shorts and a singlet top that she felt quite underdressed. Two seconds later, we spotted a man walking to the restaurant wearing nothing but speedos and flip flops. And that set the tone for our second Vic Falls stay - laid back and completely comfortable. We were a bit apprehensive about coming back. I mean, we weren't sure if there would be water this time around. As the plane landed at Livingstone airport, we tried to spot the spray of [View Full Entry]

Hi all, Just thought we'd post a web site address which contains the photos that one of our fellow tour members took whilst on the Kenya to Vic falls leg of the trip. One day we'll get suitable internet access to get a few more of our pictures on here! http://rossdub.myphotoalbum.com Cheers, Brian [View Full Entry]

White Water Rafting

 Africa » Zambia » Livingstone
To say I was apprehensive about this little escapade would be an understatement, but i went ahead and did half a day. The section of the Zambezi we did was the first ten rapids starting from the Boiling Pot, just after the end of the waterfall section. We had a leader who was manic but I think very good. There were six of us on the raft with Boyd at the rear, the one thing that we became very familiar with on the raft was teh rope around the side - the "Oh Shit!" rope. We were taught to paddle forwards, [View Full Entry]

Victoria Falls

 Africa » Zambia » Livingstone
We have visited the Falls twice in the last few days and they are mind blowing. The figures of 800,000,000 litres of water flowing over in one minute are just too much to take on board. So I won't talk about those! The Falls are in a National Park which you have to pay to enter, which is fair enough. They have laid trails that you can follow to get to the vantage points for viewing them. (These paths are of course fairly near to the edge of the opposite 'cliff', so my vertigo received some serious battering. I think it [View Full Entry]

Panic Stations!

 Africa » Zambia » Livingstone
We have just had a lovely barbeque beside the pool, the food was bought in town and the difference in shopping on Chirstmas Eve could not be more marked. There was no commercial hype abouut buying Christmas 'things', so food was easy. I brought a packet of balloons to decorate the Brai area, we went down to the railway station to buythe charcoal and then after a swim started to ligth the fire and sort out the food. It was simple and delicious and we chattered with other groups of people which was lovely. So why aren't I asleep in my [View Full Entry]

Pickies and scrumping

 Africa » Zambia » Livingstone
Sorry about the lack of pickies - I think I have sorted myself out, so let's try again!! Others watiing to use the internet, so not many words - for once!! Well, that didn't work - so i will leave the pictures until S Africa and a broadband connection. Sleep is proving to be quite important on this trip. Going to sleep in Africa is a totally different ball game: insects, frogs, bats and some birds all start to sing. Loudly. That is fine in the countrysde until the hippos start to laugh which makes me giggle and sleep becomes even [View Full Entry]
