Our second stop in Malawi was Kande (pronounced 'candy') Beach, where relaxing and drinking a little too much were the orders of each day. It's a tradition for overland tours to have a fancy dress party during their stay at Kande, and the locals know that whenever they see one of the trucks pulling up, they can expect to make a killing selling ridiculous outfits at ridiculous prices. Of course, it would be no fun if you actually knew what you would be wearing at the party, so names are put into a hat and everyone in the group draws one out at random, and then takes charge of that person's costume. It's lucky that we were all up for a laugh, because there were some pretty outrageous outfits being modelled that night. We crossed into ... read more

We are coming to the end of our tour. The last highlight of the trip is Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It is twice as high and twice as wide as Niagara Falls. As it is too much red tape to take our bus across the river into Zambia, we sadly bid our bus driver Barry good bye in the morning. A very short ferry ride across the Chobe river puts us into Zambia- and of course, there is a $50.00 customs fee to enter. I mention this fact for two reasons- one is- as usual, Canadians are always charged the most it seems when entering other countries- the second reason has to more to do with my travel agent...........my personal travel agent. Altho he does a WONDERFUL job of planning ... read more

Back in Livingstone (pronounced as if there was no "e" on the end) for a week, we decided to partake of some touristy activities that are the specialty of this area - sort of an amusement park on steroids. This town has more of that vibe than just about any we have visited so far, and yet it is also a small city with all the regular activities that go on there, with colleges and a technical university, as well as some manufacturing. Also, even the "amusement park" type activities are all centered on the natural beauty of the place: geography, geology, hydrology, flora and fauna. Where else to start than the falls itself. Our hostel sends a daily free shuttle van the 10 or so kms from the town centre to the falls on the ... read more

So after two short flights we arrived in Livingstone which is named after David Livingstone who was the first white man to explore the area. It is also the home of Victoria Falls which is on the Zambezi river. An enjoyable taxi drive dicussing English football teams soon had us arriving at our waterfront campsite to start getting a feel for the next week of sleeping under canvas.....and with various wild animals around.....namely monkeys and baboons at this site! Our first night in tent was a bit more luxourious than what was to come as the tents actually had framed beds in and an electric bedside lamp. With mum and dad sharing, I was able to have my tent all to myself! Before we got too comfortable in them though we booked ourselves onto a sunset ... read more

our last day and night in Zambia and our killer place to stay. Sad. I do have to say I won't miss the bugs. So we slept in a bit and then when we got up we went to ride elephants. It's kind of like riding a horse, just bigger. afterwards we got to feed the elephants and we stuck our hands right in their mouth. I felt the tonuge. after a light lunch we went and rode the jet boat on the zimbaze river. the same one shelly kayaked the other day. we had to ride a cable car down to the river. Well I can say that they would never be allowed to do this in the states. it was fun riding right up to the rocks and being slung around and over some ... read more

Victoria Falls have been one of all things on our travel list that we always wanted to see since it is one of the most amazing nature wonders in the world. Of course we couldn’t resist jumping into the fabulous falls either and it has been a lifetime experience for sure. Even better we could enjoy the last days and celebrating New Years with the view towards night Victoria Falls with our dear friends. Livingstone is the closest town to Victoria Falls from the Zambian side and there wouldn’t be a big deal to do there if not Victoria Falls faced the town. Many tourists are passing Livingstone and staying for few days. It has been quite busy since New Year was few days away and of course the place gets its own charm this time ... read more

This is how I had hoped to blog. I wanted to write often and send pictures. The internet here is slow but it does seem to be up half the time. We also have free time. This is the first time we've not been on the constant move. I did a culture tour of the village near our lodge. Many of the people working here are from there. Shelly had a snafu in her kayaking trip but finally got it together. She'll not be back until later today. I do get to do my ultra light flight later and I'm excited. The village is what we think of when we think of Africa. I'm hopefully getting several of the pictures posted from last night and my tour. I'm having such fun on this trip. Claire ps. ... read more

wow, it's been a great day for both Shelly and myself. She did the kayaking on the Zambezi river. it's world class and part of it is closed because the water is too high and it is too dangerous. But you know Shelly, she had to go for it. well she thought she'd be in a 2 person kayak. wrong, it was a one person inflatable. she said the hike down to the river was wild, very hard. I've not seen the pictures. Then she got to the river and that's when she discovered it's a one man inflatable kayak. She started out and after the first 2 rapids, she actually thought she might have gotten in over her head and might have quit if there was a way out of the gorge, but there wasn't. ... read more

Hi. so sorry for the delay. Internet in the hotels has been unreliable. We made it to Zambia yesterday. Wow, we are in Africa now. We were in Black integrated Europe before. I will write more later today about the last days in South Africa. But i had a few minutes and the internet was up so I'm posting from our lodge. wow on this lodge. I'm going to try to post 2 pictures of it. We can see the mist of the falls from our room( we are on the top of the falls about 1 mile away. Our room is open to the world on the side towards the falls. Last night we did a river cruise and saw hippos and crocs. Today Shelly is white water kayaking. I'm not sure of what I've ... read more

Zambia (10 June 2011 to 13 June 2011) Next morning with our lunches packed once again, we headed to the airport for our flight to Zambia. Flying a low cost airline, “1time”, we didn’t want to take chances so went way ahead of time, grabbed a sandwich, muffin and a coffee at the airport and boarded the plane to Victoria Falls. Livingstone airport was a tiny quaint place with bizarre amounts of checking and immigration formalities into the country. Our pick-up from the hotel “The Waterfront” awaited us and we reached the same in about 20 minutes. Checked in, had our lunch and headed out to plan our activities there. After booking for the tour of the falls and the micro-light flight for the next day we roamed around the property and settled by the deck ... read more
