BarbeAndMon

Barbe and Mon are fulfilling a life-long dream to travel Africa. Follow us to Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa over a 14 week period. This is our journal of the trip and we hope to update it as time, internet access, electricity and inspiration permits. If you don't see anything for a few days, please don't worry - we are probably having too much fun.

To close out our big adventure, we had decided to take one last train trip and use it as a last opportunity to see a bit more countryside before we left this great continent. First, let me say that the Trans Karoo Train taking us from Johannesburg back to Cape Town was everything the Tazara Train was not. Clean, relatively quiet, working toilets, white bedding and linen, a real dining car with porcelain and a wine list! But then, also a bit dull, a bit predictable, nothing really went wrong . . . But there were also similarities between the two. Did you notice that both trains begin with a 'T'? Once again we had a double sleeper car to ourselves with 2 benches that turned into beds and a central table. Once again, the train ... read more

So, after our Garden Route drive ended in Port Elizabeth, we stayed a day longer to take in a day-long game drive with long-time guide Alan and then flew to Johannesburg where we were picked up and taken to a permanent tented lodge (similar to the type we stayed at in Tanzania's Selous Game reserve - see blog entry "Selous 1" for details) for 4 days of Sabi Sands Game Reserve and Kruger National Park game drives and bush walks. We took them in and relished them knowing that these were the final and still-amazing animal encounters and sightings that we experienced during our awe inspiring 3 plus months' sojourn in Africa. Two highlights stood out amongst the many wonderful creatures we saw for the last time. b. Rhino Encounters All of our previous sightings of ... read more

This leg of our journey involved two more of my favourite things - beaches and all things golf. Despite this area's name - Garden Route, our goal was to follow the coastline as closely and as much as possible and if there was a beach, we would find it. The golf, well, you got a taste of that in one of my previous entries and for more, read on. b. Cape Town to Hermanus We drove out of the city on the four-lane divided N1 thinking that the end goal, the town of Stellenbosch, should be reached quickly. Stellenbosch is both the centre of the Cape's wine growing as well as a university town with deep Afrikaans historical roots. Once we got off the N1, we immediately started seeing vinyards. Unfortunately it was Sunday and many ... read more

(Don't forget to check out Barbe's last "Overland" blog, posted on Saturday.) The night we arrived in Cape Town was also our last night with the overland group, and Chris and Lourens, our guide and driver, wanted to do something special. We had gotten up the earliest yet (4:30 am) from our last night of camping near the Namibia border so that we could make the 8-10 hour drive in good time. So maybe we were not all at our best from lack of sleep, but the excitement did start to build as soon as Chris announced, about a hundred km's out, that he could see Table Mountain. There was a lot of affection in his voice, and we slowly learned why Capetonians have such strong feelings about their city. Plus he was finishing almost three ... read more

Sitting down in front of our netbook to write once again, I must admit that I have struggled to write the last couple of blog entries. Each day I have spent on this overland trip has produced so many news sights, activities, incidents and emotions that it has become almost impossible to chronicle our safari in any kind of meaningful and concise way. So, I am trying a different approach in order to give you, faithful readers, a taste of this portion of our adventure. The third and last leg of our group trek (the entire trip entitled by our overland company 'Dunes, Delta and Falls') focused on the 'Dunes' portion and for my work mates reading our blog, this area is a geologist's dream come true. And with all the stunning scenery and the huge ... read more

We finally reached the Atlantic Ocean on February 21. An entire continent crossed with several means of transportation, but essentially "on the ground" since we had left Dar and the Indian Ocean by train about a month earlier (remember the Tazara?). That evening we saw our first "over the water" sunset from the perfectly west-facing jetty and it seemed a good omen of things to come. That afternoon the entire group had visited the "booking office", a not unusual feature of Southern African tourist centres that have many extreme activities to offer. They showed us a very badly edited video with particularly tacky music highlighting some of the adrenaline pumping possibilities: sky-diving, dune-boarding, and quad-biking over the dunes (a bit like playing chicken with an avalanche on a snowmobile in the Whistler back-country). None of them ... read more

Sorry for the late post folks; there was not much internet in the Namibian desert hinterland and then we got caught up with the amazing high life of Cape Town (more on that in a future post). Quick note - we posted more photos on our last post (Overland 1) so check 'em out. And now, on to our continuing safari. One word. Rain. Did I mention we are in the rainy season in southern Africa? Did I mention how much I hate camping in the rain? Rain, rain and then we hit the desert and got roasted; and then it rained again. Sigh. Africa is an amazing land of contrasts, even with the weather. Either that or many of us on the overland truck were beginning to believe that we were cursed. It was bad ... read more

After over a week in quaint Livingstone with all our laundry done and everything to be seen and done completed (ok, not the bungi jumping off the bridge but there is no way I was gonna do that), we were champing at the bit to get on the road again. For this leg we are traveling on a overland truck with 15 other people, our CEO (Chief Experience Officer - guide, fixer, cook, nursemaid) Chris from RSA, driver Lawrence from RSA and our big-assed truck (see pic). Our first leg took us through a bit of a reapeat of our Botswana trip (Chobe, Okavango, Maun) and on through to Windhoek, Namibia, but it was much quicker and there were sights, overnight stays and activities unique to both trips and any repetition was more than welcome as ... read more

Back in Livingstone (pronounced as if there was no "e" on the end) for a week, we decided to partake of some touristy activities that are the specialty of this area - sort of an amusement park on steroids. This town has more of that vibe than just about any we have visited so far, and yet it is also a small city with all the regular activities that go on there, with colleges and a technical university, as well as some manufacturing. Also, even the "amusement park" type activities are all centered on the natural beauty of the place: geography, geology, hydrology, flora and fauna. Where else to start than the falls itself. Our hostel sends a daily free shuttle van the 10 or so kms from the town centre to the falls on the ... read more

Ok, so it was actually on the Ntwetwe Pan (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nwetwe_Pan), not quite like a desert sandstorm and was shortly quashed by a driving rainstorm but . . . you get the picture (if not see pics below). We last left our intrepid travellers relaxing in Lusaka and taking in the local sights. Wednesday (25 January 2012) we boarded a comfy coach bus for the trip to the home of Victoria Falls, Livingstone and arrived 6 and a half hours later in the mid afternoon at our backpackers hostel, a local institution named Jollyboys. But this stop was a quick one. Immediately the next morning (26 January 2012) we were picked up for our 7 day camping tour of Botswana. Here we met our amiable and good humoured travelling companion Lucas from Switzerland. The three of ... read more
