Village life is amazing...and very busy too. Hmm where do i begin? Well we arrived last monday, so have only been here for 2 weeks, but it feels like a month! Our hut is 200m from the health clinic, which is on the grounds of the FDNC vocational school, which has about 100 students enrolled in tailoring, computing, carpentry, sustainable agriculture, nutrition and even some disability students. So as well as outpatients, i also see teachers and students (lots of headaches and period pains!!) But the outpatients are the most interesting and also challenging. The language barrier is greater than i imagined, but Juliet (the nurse i am working very closely with) does all the interpreting for us. She is a life-saver! My first patient was a suprise for me to see in Africa...an elderly ... read more

Monday March 5, 2007 It has just past midday here at the FDNC Natomdome village vocational school. In this blog entry I hope to give a more detailed account of the whole trip so far as the first blog was a little brief, additionally I will document were your money has been spent so far. * all observations and comments made in this blog are my own un-informed opinion, therefore many may be inaccurate and I hope I don’t cause any offence. Adelaide-Singapore-Nairobi The first leg of the journey was relatively un-eventful arriving in ‘little India’ Singapore as planned. This was the first time that I have visited Singapore outside of the Airport and I have to admit that it was an enjoyable 24hours. I had a pre-conception of Singapore as be a very boring and ... read more

Hello, I’m back in Kampala after a short visit to Lira. Three of my friends from the program want to do their independent study projects with formerly abducted child soldiers. So they went to Lira with the aim of talking with organizations doing just that. We boarded a bus in downtown Kampala after some confusion on where exactly the bus terminal was. As we got on the bus the driver started moving people out of their seats so that we, the muzungus, could have a seat. This was very uncomfortable and some people were yelling at us and the driver. I wanted to just get off the bus at that point, but we didn’t. There was no room for my luggage, so it sat on my lap the whole trip. My legs and butt went numb ... read more

Hello. Seems a long time since I updated you all - a lot has happened again! Arrived on placement a week last Tuesday. Were actually located an hours walk outside of Kayunga town in 'centenary college' which is basically a boarding school. Were living in staff quarters so have 3 rooms between the 4 of us (there's a family of 4 sharing the room next door tho!). They have 2 little boys next door, Opeo who is 2 and big bro Freddie who is 9! We can't understand a word each other is saying but they are so cute it doesn't matter! We have electricty 1/2 the time (yey!), the bore hole is right next door (which trust me is pretty good going) and the pit latrines are clean at least so we've not done badly. ... read more

Hi Friends! I’m back in Kampala from a whirl-wind tour of western Uganda & Rwanda. Let me first say, the countryside is gorgeous: rolling green hills in every direction. I was looking back through the pictures I took this morning, and they just don’t do justice to the landscape. We started our trip with a stop at the equator in a little town called Masaka. This was a very touristy site; while we were there a group from China were very excited to get their picture taken with Americans! They almost wouldn’t let us leave. Then we drove on to Mbarara where we stayed the night, had some good Ugandan beer and relaxed. The next morning we split in to smaller groups (my class has 23 students!); one group visited a refugee camp, another visited a ... read more

but all are from Jinja and the source of the Nile, which I've uploaded a selection already. But, here's a picture of the house I'm living in. Isn't it bright and festive?!? I'll have more photos when I get back from Rwanda, I really haven't taken my camera out while in the city. I'll try harder. :) -B... read more

hi everyone- so nothing too exciting to report. i mean being here is an adventure in itself, but really i've just been attending lectures durning the day and hanging out with my host family at night. this weekend my host sister and her cousin took me to Owino Market. it's a fabric and clothing market in the city. it was packed to with people and products. most of the clothes/shoes/bags are second hand and they sit in a pile in front of the vendor and you have to bend down to sort through everything to find what you want. so my sister calls it the "bend over boutique". there are narrow pathways between the vendors so you are literally cheek to cheek with the other shoppers. on sunday my family took me to their church service. ... read more

Hello again! Here's my last installment before I go on placement!!! Can't believe it's come around so fast. Have done so much this week so I'll try and keep it brief. We had a cultural evening which consisted of entertainment from the Americans (line dancing), Australians (a National song), Ugandans (lots of tribal dancing and singing) and the Brits (a bloody fantastic version of the pantomime Cinderalla, and yours truly played Prince Charming). Went pretty well though Im not sure our sense of humour is fully appreciated over here! A couple of us went dancing on Tuesday night in the local bar as it was ladies night. Walking down a hill of mud and flips breaking was not the best start but it was great fun. The Ugandan men are wicked dancers, would put some of ... read more
