I arrived in London safely. My next flight leaves in a few hours for Dubai. The security here was crazy....it took one hour to get through...mostly because people do not listen. Posted everywhere are the liquid and gel rules as well as a one bag rule. One bag seems clear to me though one lady insisted some chas should allow her 7 bags! Women were arguing that purses are not bags...it was quite chaotic. The flight was good....bumpy but good. I am going to browse around here...update you in Dubai. Tasha... read more

As the plane began descending, I was looking out the window at the quaint houses and I noticed the road…and this very thought occurred to me: “Oh my gosh, they really do drive on the other side of the road!” Not that I didn’t believe it, but it became clear to me that I really was about to land in England! The landing was smooth and soon I was off the plane and heading toward customs. Since I had nothing to declare and I was only there for a short time (what they refer to as “transit”) my customs experience went smoothly; I had a nice chat w/the customs guy and I was through the door…I WAS IN LONDON!!! The first order of business was to call home, so I made my way to a phone. ... read more

My day started 3 hours later than I intended for it to begin! I set the alarm so I could take a brief nap (at 3:30AM) and while I should have gotten up when my alarm went off the first time @ 4:30, my body had other needs and so I set the alarm to go off one hour later…and the next time I opened my eyes it was 8:00am!!! Now, if I had made better use of my time in the weeks leading up to this day this would not have been a problem. I, however, am a procrastinator and for all of you who know me well can stop shaking your head at me…I still managed to get everything done before my flight took off, I just didn’t have time to pack as carefully ... read more

Photos to come soon... Our last minute addition to our Ugandan itinerary paid off and we spent over an hour today with a large group of chimpanzees in the rain forest of Kibale National Park, outside the western Ugandan town of Fort Portal. Yesterday we drove from Kisoro where we had based ourselves to see the gorillas. It was a long drive but took us through some amazing scenery. The south western part of Uganda has certainly taken us by surprise in terms of how beautiful it is. Our guide took us off the main road along a, well, I'll generously call it a track, next to a very picturesque lake. The steep sided hills covered in terraced gardens went straight down to the waters edge, and there were villages out in their canoes fishing as ... read more

Tuesday morning was completely wasted in Jinja trying to change money. I didn't want to change US dollars because I'm getting really low, but the ATM we were first sent to didn't accept visa & the next two wouldn't give me any cash, so I was forced to change Kenyan Shillings back at the Forex. To make the walk around town more annoying, I’d neglected to put a t-shirt on under my jumper & started stewing in my own juices come noon. Returned to camp cashed up, changed, had lunch & went quadbiking for a couple of hours in the afternoon with Becky, Rachael & Dianne. We started off on the practice circuit to familiarize ourselves with the machine for a half hour, then headed out to the surrounding area. We roared through local villages, waved ... read more

We have been quite busy since the last blog, catching up with family and making our way to Kampala, Uganda. We flew out on Tuesday from Arusha, over Mount Kiliminjaro (obscured by cloud, of course) and in to Nairobi, where we met up with James' mum. Yes, that's right. Janice, James and I hung out at the airport in Nairobi, catching up on gossip and news. Surreal? Yep. Janice flew out for Sydney (via Dubai) at about 5pm and we caught a flight to Entebbe at 9pm. Side note: The airport in Nairobi has 1001 duty free shops and pretty much nothing else. We arrived in Entebbe at 11.15pm and transferred to Namirembe Guesthouse in Kampala. We checked in, checked out the room then crashed on the bed. Despite having done nothing but sit all day, ... read more

Early Tuesday morning I met the group for my seventy one day tour going from Nairobi, Kenya to Cape Town, South Africa. Had a late start as some people needed to do banking in order to change travellers cheques into US dollars for kitty payment. Once on the road, our first stop was a visit to Sheldricks Elephant orphanage. The organization is on a large area of land & they rehabilitate orphaned elephants & rhinos before releasing them into the wild. Their costs are funded through donors & you can sponsor your own elephant for around US$50- per year. The little ellies were fun to watch as the keepers fed them & they played soccer together & frolicked in the mud. Made a short stop overlooking the Rift Valley, which goes for thousands of kilometres. Onto ... read more

Well my time in Uganda (about 9 weeks) and Africa has finally come to an end :(, and I have to say that it has been one of the best experiences in my life. I'll never forget my time with the kin kids, and hopefully one day I will make it back there. If I were at a different point in my life, and if I could make money doing it, I doubt I would have left. However if ever you want to know my new opinion on foreign aid buy me a couple drinks one night and get ready for a rant. It's not all bad, but well....like I said a couple drinks first. While I was sad to go, I was excited for the re-union to happen in Thailand. In preparation for the much ... read more

My quest to get the kids drinking water without any sweetener added is well underway and I even managed to coax one of the boys into going a whole week without sweety water. As a reward for his efforts I took him into Kampala for chicken and chips, which of course is a huge deal. Joseph, the boy who I took is such a sweet kid who explained to me that when he grows up he wants to help the numerous homeless people lining the streets of Kampala. As an initial gesture he asked me if he could save his fries for one of the people on the street. Being the sinic that I am now, I expected the person receiving the food to be ungrateful, but to my surprise the lady actually thanked Joseph for ... read more
