Greetings from the Mother Land, I have finished my internship with MACRO. It was an incredible experience and I feel like I did some good work for them. I spent the last week there rolling beads and laughing with the friends I have made. They made sure that I was aware that they were sad about me leaving. They kept saying some thing about Goodbyes being so hard. I feel great. I've said so many goodbyes in the past couple of years it doesn't feel painful anymore. I see it less like a loss and more like a transition. Yes, I am leaving Mukono, but I am moving on the next exciting part of my life. Each new experience that comes brings me new faces and new stories. So instead of goodbye, I am saying ... read more

im in jinja which is a small town just west of kampala- and yesterday we rafted the nile. it was....nuts. rapids reach the intensity level of 6, and we were doing up to 5. we flipped over three times which is a life altering experience. i would love to say that my life flashed before my eyes when i was pulled underwater time and time again, but really all i could think about was the air that was in....some direction. when we first went out the weather was pretty nice, but as soon as we were on the water, learning the tricks of the trade with piers and sayer...it started raining. raining hard. so hard it hurt. oh yeah that was the hail. HAIL on the nile...in uganda. chunks half the size of pennies! this is ... read more

Hi guys. Just thought I would write a quick update, I know its been a while but there's not much to tell really. Schools are out for a month at the mo so things are really quiet. We've managed to persuasde all our groups to meet twice a week while we have so much extra time and have set up an environmental club at one of our secondary schools for the kids that are hanging around over holidays - but I've still managed to read 3 books this week!!! Last weekend Kate and I stayed on placement for the first time in an attempt to save some money. Wont be making that mistake again - it was soooo boring!! We ending up eating all day cos it was something to do, so not all that different ... read more

hello and how are you are just whats expected when speaking to ugandans. its such a friendly place! i love the heat - although it gets a little too muggy at times, still nicer than snow. the trip thus far..... got on the flight to london no problem which was in a new boeing 777...which means 50 rows of 9 seats or around that, pretty nuts and lots of nice space. i got to london at around 630am local time. i had to pickup my bags and cart them to terminal four to check in for the last flight to entebbe. thats when i split my back in two. i suppose this was from the 45lbs in books and toys and 35lbs in clothes and meds plus my camera and a purse filled with more ... read more

Ogambachi? I am entering my last week with MACRO! Strange stuff. Completely ready for this conclusion though. I plan to spend this week at home and go to the MACRO office during the day. I have a week and a half before Jillian comes to travel with me. I am going to use this time to get my homework finished so that when I get back to the States, I can focus on just re-emerging myself into American culture. I know myself too well to leave a billion papers weighing heavily on my back. I thought I had become a bit of a procrastinator in my old age, but apparently I am back to my old ways of getting home from school and doing my homework immediately. I think its my Dad's fault. Thanks dad... ... read more

O.K, travel blog time. Today I will be doing things slightly different, instead of starting with tales from the village etc I will start with ‘business’. The reason being some very exiting things have happened regarding the work side of our stay in Uganda in the past 4-5 weeks since I last wrote. I like to think the reason it has been so long since my last entry is that I have been rather busy with work, that and the fact I can be a bit lazy and tend to spend my time on the net looking up sport results. Celeste has provided you all with a glimpse of what has been going on in her last entry so once more I may be repeating a few things. This last week I have worked alongside Soft Power Education, another non-profit I found online prior to this trip. Soft Power is a British registered, non-religious charity, working closely within the local community of Jinja. Their aim is to develop and improve educational facilities for children. Starting off initially by building two pre-schools for AIDS orphans, they now have constructed/renovated close to 30 schools, all made possible by monetary donations and volunteer work. This means, any donations made go 100% into the project...a big reason why I wanted to contribute myself. After meeting wiith the staff of Soft Power, We've decided the best way for me to help is by painting the “teaching aids” requested on the classroom walls of Wakitaka Primary School. This would be perfect since I just don’t have the energy to ... read more

I know I’m a bit... different. And I’m not talking the “trendy” kind of different that’s cool. I’m talking the “weird” kind of different. I’ve known it since I was a youngster and would have spring cleaning day in my barbie doll house (even in the winter). I never actually played dolls like normal girls. I just cleaned and organized their living spaces. My point being, is that I’ve got one week remaining. And while normal people might panic to leave the comforts of home, I panic to return to it. I guess that makes me feel weird. Even though I love so many things and people from home, especially Christmas... there’s nothing and no one there that makes me REALLY want to go back, not to say that there is anything or anyone here ... read more

Hey hey everybody! So while the pesky photos are taking their time to load, I shall pen a few words! Today is Luke’s last day in the village, and he had a lovely send off from FDNC and was presented with 2 beautiful oil prints for the wall, an FDNC T-shirt and also a very plush certificate! He was chuffed! We have a short holiday in Kampala leaving tomorrow before he flies to Rome on Tuesday for his next adventures of research for his cycling business. Tonight we are having an Indian meal with Mai Jessica (the lady who has been hosting us every night for dinner), her son Samuel (who is the founder of FDNC), Justin and Kubo who are also volunteers that we have spent our evenings with over dinner. News flash about ... read more
