I knew the moment I met Stephen that he was someone special. There are certain people that just have a light around them... “good energy” I guess you could call it. Stephen Wante is 30 years of age and runs the El-Shadai Foster Home in Bugembe, right outside of Jinja town. The home offers shelter, compassion, counseling and support to app. 30 children, with ages ranging from 3 years to 20 years. The children’s background and home districts vary widely, but all tell the story of poverty, neglect, abuse, conflict and abandonment. The home is a family-style environment and the children treat each other as brothers and sisters, and “Uncle” Stephen as a trusted and respected father figure. There are no “care-takers” and all the chores are shared. The home gets by with the basic ... read more

Hi, I feel as if time either flies by or is at a complete standstill depending on the minute. This past week brought clarity, pure bliss and desperation...also depending on the minute. At a few points this week I was feeling ready to be done with my time in Uganda. I felt like I was stuck in a few days of there being just enough time to not do anything productive in my internship and too long before I could see all the people that I have been missing. For a few of the days I retreated into my room and just read books, wrote in my journal and watched a trillion episodes of Arrested Development. Then of course, my mood would do a complete turn around and I would have surges of creative energy ... read more

It has been quite some time since I've written on this blog, and I think all of you are due an update on my whereabouts and adventures. I can't really remember the last time I wrote, so I'm not sure where to start! I think this may be long, so i'll try to divide it into chucks for you to read at your leisure. Please, if you read nothing else, read the last section on Uganda ( Boda! Boda!): Professional Procrastination: My thesis is coming along at a remarkably slow rate, due mostly to my inability to get anything done during the month of march. I blame it on the plethora of movies and events happening around Durban, and the ever nap-inducing humid heat of this city. Either way, post-the events I will describe below, ... read more

Hey didn’t that guy used to work at ECRI....excuse me, I mean ECRI INSTITUTE? It’s true Bill and I worked at ECRI Institute together over the past year, but we didn’t know each other (the first and third floors are so far away). And it wasn’t until a week before his departure for Uganda back in February that we learned we would both be working in Africa. Bill Davis is 32 and on a second round as a Peace Corps volunteer. From 2002-2004 he worked with the Peace Corps in Tanzania as a Chemistry teacher and spent a good amount of time traveling through South Africa afterwards. A Peace Corps contract is for 2 years. However once the 2 years is completed, you can then choose a placement anywhere for any amount of time...this deal ... read more

Photos, for your viewing pleasure... Africa » Uganda By B Here NowApril 17th 2007Brittney Holder Writing has taken a back seat to posting pictures this week. I'm busy working on my final paper so I don't feel much like typing out a long blog. But things are going well here. I'm sad to leave the friends I've made, and the simple beauty of the country side. But it's back to the smog-filled, people ridden streets of Kampala for me. I'm heading there by post bus on Saturday, after I see Uganda's most popular pop-star in concert -Chamelion. Don't ask me why, I'm just tagging along with some of the Peace Corps volunteers I've met. Should be a fun night of dancing and mindless drinking! Miss you all! ... read more

Hi, I have arrived home safely from a wonderful week in Rwanda. My life continues to be bursting with goodness. I found out today that I got into UVM. I have decided that after all this traveling I am ready to settle into a community and become involved with a life consisting of a stable bed. This year has been the most incredible, life-changing, fun, challenging, experience of my life so far and as it winds down I really recognize my need for a stable home (at least for a little while.) Burlington is where I want to be. Funny, looking back a few years, I scoffed at my friends for staying in Vermont and look at me now. Back to my roots. These past two weeks have brought a plethora of experiences to my ... read more

Hi guys! Just a quick one to say they finally have internet here in Kayunga but its really expensive!! Just wanted to ask you all to send me your numbers..... again... please! Hopefully this will be the last time I ask. Promise to be more carefull from now on! Life back in the village is good. Took me a while to settle in again after spending a couple of weeks with so many people (was actually very homesick for the first couple days - very unlike me!). Its been a pretty slow week with people taking extended breaks over Easter. So really haven't done much and now I'm off to Buende in another district as we have a double birthday to celebrate!! I've made banoffee pie but what with no fridge its more like banoffee soup! ... read more

CYORF is an organization I found online, and have been exchanging a series of enthusiastic emails prior to my visit with the director, Edward Mutumbe. By the end of the week my schedule is already full, but I did have a few bags of clothing and shoes to give. I contacted Edward and expressed my regret on not being able to spend time with them as a volunteer, but I would be more than happy to drop off donations and come for a “quick” visit. We arrive shortly at the CYORF office early Friday morning and I am seated on one side of a small dark hut-style house outside of town. The room fills with neatly dressed board members and community representatives with notepads and pens: “SISTER SHERRY. What do you desire to bring to ... read more

5 a.m. is a terrible time to be setting off to Entebbe. Already the temperature is warm and humidity high. We loaded Mohammed's red hippy bus for the last time, wondering why it is that bags seem heavier on the way home. Students rather fractious this morning, accusing people of losing their torches, cigarettes, make up, gifts etc. Sade is staying in Kampala for a few days but she got up to see the others off, which was nice. It was still dark when we set off to the airport, and the sky lightened over Lake Victoria as we arrived. Mohammed did rather well since, in addition to a substantial tip he was the surprised recipient of a bag full of pumpkins and yams that Amina's aunt had given her but which she can not ... read more
