Photos, for your viewing pleasure... Africa » Uganda By B Here Now April 17th 2007 Brittney Holder Writing has taken a back seat to posting pictures this week. I'm busy working on my final paper so I don't feel much like typing out a long blog. But things are going well here. I'm sad to leave the friends I've made, and the simple beauty of the country side. But it's back to the smog-filled, people ridden streets of Kampala for me. I'm heading there by post bus on Saturday, after I see Uganda's most popular pop-star in concert -Chamelion. Don't ask me why, I'm just tagging along with some of the Peace Corps volunteers I've met. Should be a fun night of dancing and mindless drinking! Miss you all! ... read more

April 9th 2007

Just got back from Fort Portal. Spent the holiday there with my friends Curry and Kate who are in the SIT program with me. Curry is living there and working for a conflict resolution/human rights NGO. We went on a couple of long hikes in to the foothills of the mountains, and hung out with some volunteers staying at the hostel with us. Ate some really really good food too! Hope these photos give you an idea of what the landscape is like....... read more

thought i'd share a little story... so this morning as i was walking to the tree nursery with nicholaus (the man whose teaching me all about reforestation) he informed me that we would be cutting the horns off of several goats to keep them jabbing in to one another. i asked, with hesitation, if it would hurt the goats and he said yes, but it was for their own good. now, sawing the horns off goats does not appeal to me because i m a vegetarian and i don't like the idea of hurting animals. so i followed along thinking to myself that i would just stand in the sidelines and observe horrifying process. as we were peering in to the goat's pen i heard nicholaus say "fleas". i aske him to repeat what he said ... read more

March 21st 2007

So I'm extremely busy this week writing several papers and finalizing plans for the practicum. I don't have time to write up a long blog about my experience in eastern Uganda. But I can post pictures! So I will. I hope they will suffice. I'm leaving on Friday for Bushenyi for four weeks. I'll try to write from there, but otherwise expect to hear from me in a month. In the east we visited Sipi Falls, the city of Mbale, and lived with a rural family for three days. The falls were amazing, we were able to hike up/down to all three. We hiked down to the largest fall in the evening, with the trail lit only by lantern -very cool. My particular host family was very sweet. They consisted of three wives, a father, ... read more

Hello, I’m back in Kampala after a short visit to Lira. Three of my friends from the program want to do their independent study projects with formerly abducted child soldiers. So they went to Lira with the aim of talking with organizations doing just that. We boarded a bus in downtown Kampala after some confusion on where exactly the bus terminal was. As we got on the bus the driver started moving people out of their seats so that we, the muzungus, could have a seat. This was very uncomfortable and some people were yelling at us and the driver. I wanted to just get off the bus at that point, but we didn’t. There was no room for my luggage, so it sat on my lap the whole trip. My legs and butt went numb ... read more

Hi Friends! I’m back in Kampala from a whirl-wind tour of western Uganda & Rwanda. Let me first say, the countryside is gorgeous: rolling green hills in every direction. I was looking back through the pictures I took this morning, and they just don’t do justice to the landscape. We started our trip with a stop at the equator in a little town called Masaka. This was a very touristy site; while we were there a group from China were very excited to get their picture taken with Americans! They almost wouldn’t let us leave. Then we drove on to Mbarara where we stayed the night, had some good Ugandan beer and relaxed. The next morning we split in to smaller groups (my class has 23 students!); one group visited a refugee camp, another visited a ... read more

I'll have more photos when I get back from Rwanda, I really haven't taken my camera out while in the city. I'll try harder. :) -B... read more
