Background: Shortly after independence, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. One-party rule came to an end in 1995 with the first democratic elections held in the country since the 1970s. Zanzibar's semi-autonomous status and popular opposition have led to two contentious elections since 1995, which the ruling party won despite international observers' claims of voting irregularities.

Last night a group of teachers went out to celebrate Halloween. We sat around with drinks, in order to properly plan our costumes. My costume ended up being "rack of lamb." My sidekick was an ass. Enjoy the photos! [View Full Entry]

A Tanzanian School (1)
The schools have no posters and the walls of the classrooms are bare.
10th October We have no access to a car today which is quite frustrating but an excellent opportunity for me to update this weblog. We spent Friday formulating our question sheets for the schools we are visiting this week. We are trying to find out more details about the schools to develop the level of information we have ready for our tour of 20 schools next week… I’ve become a bit more familiar with the area after spending Saturday watching a rather tense game of rugby and Sunday afternoon relaxing on Bahari beach. I had my first swim in the welcoming [View Full Entry]

30th September to 3rd October Having been travelling for about 18 hours I was extremely relieved to arrive in Dar es Salaam on time. My change over in Nairobi was chaotic and more than a little confusing (I had to carry my overstuffed 80litre rucksack a with extra kit strapped on the side by the small handle at the top down two flights of shaking metal stairs and a couple of hundred metres to the aircraft while sweltering in the morning sun as well as my equally overstuffed hand luggage); but I arrived got my travel visa, picked up my bag [View Full Entry]

Arrival

Africa » Tanzania » East » Dar es Salaam
I arrived successfully on the 1st of October after leaving for Heathrow early afternoon Sunday. The journey was long and largely uneventful. Changing at Nairobi was more than a little chaotic and after being sent this way and that I hauled all my baggage by hand from the terminal building to the plane itself. Were located in an area called Bahari Beach approx 30ks from Dar es Salaam. I'm only really just setting in after having an orientation day yesterday. Tomorrow I will visit the school where I will be teaching English in the mornings ready to get to grips with [View Full Entry]

Classes in Dar

Africa » Tanzania » East » Dar es Salaam
Being here in Dar has been a really interesting learning experience...in experiences and in the lectures themselves. It is really cool to be on a college campus during the day and attending lectures. The campus has 17,000 students (sorry if this is a repeat...I cannot remember what I typed last time!). We have had really good lectures so far too. My favorite was on environmental policy and law in Tanzania. They have some crazy problems here that they are dealing with. It is also interesting to look at these problems in context with the history (another really cool lecture). I will [View Full Entry]

We're all packed up and ready to go! The suitcases are all lined up in rows in the living room and this morning we are going to worship in Moshi to say farewell to the brethren there and then George will be driving us up to Arusha where we will visit with the congregation there this evening and stay the night with Cy & Stephanie before getting up Monday morning to catch the 7AM bus to the airport in Nairobi, Kenya. The adventure home begins... Safari Njema will be the phrase for the day... "Have a good Journey!" Timothy came by [View Full Entry]

We are no longer on Unguja (the main island of Zanzibar. Zanzibar is really the islands of Pemba and Unguja together), but are on the mainland for 10 days. We are spending the first week here in the capitol city of Dar es Salaam, and are attending lectures at the University of Dar. It is the largest university in Tanzania, and has 17,000 undergrads, and 2,000 graduate students. We have two two-hour lectures a day, lunch, and on campus free time to do research in the library, use the pool and use the internet. Speaking of which, I will probably be [View Full Entry]

Sunset Over Dar
Sunset Over Dar
THIS is downtown Dar. I love the different colors of the buildings.
Over the past 2 weeks, I've been getting out and about in Dar Es Salaam. Yes, I live in Dar Es Salaam and am technically out in it every day, but in real life, there are two parts to "Dar." Where I live happens to fall almost smack dab in the middle of the two worlds that comprise Dar Es Salaam. In one direction you have "The Peninsula." This is where the ex-pats live, shop, beach, etc. It has grocery stores, nice hotels, beaches, nail salons, massages, basically everything that makes living in a third world country a little less... third [View Full Entry]
