Background: Shortly after independence, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. One-party rule came to an end in 1995 with the first democratic elections held in the country since the 1970s. Zanzibar's semi-autonomous status and popular opposition have led to two contentious elections since 1995, which the ruling party won despite international observers' claims of voting irregularities.

week 2

 Africa » Tanzania » East
I have a beard and moustache. Up at 6am on sunday morning to take tents down. Tony, our driver, showed us round Shangani - an awesome machine. Hit the road, stopping in Arusha for the supermarket. After 4 hours driving we arrived at Tembo campsite (elephant) which is halfway between Arusha and Dar Es Salam. It is situated in a beautiful spot at the foot of the mountains with a nice pool, tennis court and large bar area. Gems and I went on a one and a half hour walk before dinner which took us up a ridge to a viewpoint, [View Full Entry]

Hey Hey! Alright! So its been a few weeks since you’ve heard from me last and things have not stopped happening, it has been wonderful! So to keep up from where I left off…. We left Jinja, Uganda the 5th of February to Arusha, Tanzania. Just to mention that for some reason I was one of the few selected to fly first class due to a lack of space in coach! After a few weeks of drinking instant coffee and sitting on folding chairs, it was definitely a step up to enjoy their coffee bar and lazy boys and free internet! [View Full Entry]

Welcome Mr. Bush
Welcome Mr. Bush
Clearly it's necessary to have giant photos of the President on all billboards.
I am finally getting around to describing my past month here in Dar. It all started with the sudden announcement that George and his wife were coming to visit for a few days. I got an email from the embassy to let me know that services would not run as usual during that time, and suddenly Dar es Salaam became a very interesting place to drive around. Billboards popped up left, right, and center- thanking Mr. Bush for all of his help, welcoming him to Tanzania, and letting him know what great friends the USA and Tanzania were. Protests were scheduled [View Full Entry]

Excited at the prospect of finally going to east africa i got on my plane late at night to fly to nairobi. I thought all was well but had a terrible flight...It was so bumpy and i was scared the whole flight so didnt sleep a wink...Relieved to touch down safe and sound i couldn't get off that plane quick enough - only to find that everything was closed and there was no one around. It was 4am. [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]

Kilimanjaro Climb Day 1

 Africa » Tanzania » East
Captain's log; Stardate 625... aww @#%! wrong vaca! We got to the airport 4 hrs early, no lines, no traffic, off to a good start! I took a picture of our plan, seemed like a nice place to begin snapping photos. On the 6 hr flight we sat next to an NYU film director, George. Nice enough guy, flight offered unlimited free alcohol, had a glass of wine, and we all had some Bailey's and tea together, but that was it, Shoshanna and I had to be sure not to dehydrate ourselves for the climb.

Dar

Hello again, We have today made it to Dar es salaam, having made it to a campsite near Mombo (Tembo Lodge) last night after a long drive from Arusha. The last few days have been fantastic - first we drove to Karatu close to the Ngorongoro Crater where we camped for the night before an early rise and drive to the Crater gates. This place was truely amazing - just like its own little world trapped in the bubble of the crater. We saw just about every animal except leopards. After game viewing the Crater all day we then drove to [View Full Entry]

My apologies for the extremely tardy entry of my holidays in Dubai and India. I PROMISE that they are being formulated in my head and will be down on e-paper shortly. I admit that my first two weeks back, the blog update was given lackluster levels of priority, but since then it seems that every time I've sat down at my computer to enter the stories, either the internet or the power have been out in my apartment! Ah, Africa. On that note, I have had some harrowing, and some amusing experiences since returning to Dar, which serve as great reminders [View Full Entry]

Many thanks to those of you who have very kindly donated money to this project. I had spoken with Raphael of Watoto Salama about the possibility of this donation many weeks ago. We were both very excited when it turned out to be a reality. Raphael remarked ‘it was like a dream.’ I hope we can use this donation as, perhaps, a pilot for ongoing donations to these schools who greatly appreciate any help they receive. For this donation we managed to buy 105 books in total. Originally we were planning to just support the schools within the current range of [View Full Entry]
