Background: Shortly after independence, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. One-party rule came to an end in 1995 with the first democratic elections held in the country since the 1970s. Zanzibar's semi-autonomous status and popular opposition have led to two contentious elections since 1995, which the ruling party won despite international observers' claims of voting irregularities.

So this week has been a busy week because I've been here alone, my partner has been lost in a void and has messaged me saying she is coming back tomorrow, only 2 weeks late! Primary school started yesterday and I ended up finishing the lessons quite quickly, its hard for me to answer questions (because of my swahili) so we played games for the rest of the lesson. I've heard the kids out in the playground playing the games, it was fun! Yesterday I had a CAG (community action group) meeting which was really tough because my swahili is pretty [View Full Entry]

Things I love about africa (at this moment! Hehe) -when young kids in the street come up and put their hands on your head and then to your chest which means shikamoo and pole na kazi (respectful greeting and sorry for your work) -the beautiful and varied landscape -how everyone greets everyone, you’re never in too much of a rush to stop and greet a friend or acquaintance. -Dancing in the living room with 5 little girls to bongo flavour music -Teaching flavia to say bomba, poa and sadha -Teaching all the little children who live near me that my name [View Full Entry]

Monthly meeting Africa » Tanzania » Centre » Njombe
Ok well, I was sick all last week. Didn't end up taking any of the antibiotics prescribed to me because it turned out the doctror had prescribed me medicine to treat TB. I got better, or so I thought but now I have a head cold and some lingering stomach issues which are just getting annoying now (can anyone say Giardia?!?). I went back to village on sunday after a week of lying in bed and stayed for 4 days and then came back into town for our monthly meeting with SPW. Schools and a lot of the villagers are all [View Full Entry]

Well, a bunch of us SPW vols came into town on Friday for a big Peace Corps crafts fair and party on saturday and we had a lot of fun but then Eliza and I woke up on sunday feeling pretty lousy. We thought we both had the flu but we went to the hospital today to get some tests done just in case and the doctor (who was a total jerk) told me that I have "3 infections" and Eliza has "one severe kidney infection"...no more information than that. For Eliza's "one severe kidney infection" she was precribed cough medicine, [View Full Entry]
