Well, the weather finally turned good on this, our last day in Cape Town, so we got up at 6am and belted down to the Waterfront for the first sailing to Robben Island. The taxi drivers all tell us that it should be like this all the time in November, and that global warming is to blame for the strange weather. Robben Island, which is about 11 kilometres offshore and takes about 45 minutes to reach, is of course primarily famous for having been "home" to Nelson Mandela and numerous other political prisoners - nearly 700 at one time - during the apartheid years. It closed in 1991, and has been a museum and world heritage site for the last 10 years. Mandela spent 18 years here, from 1964 to 1982, before being moved to onshore ... read more

I know it's taken me forever to post this (there is still heaps to come) and for exactly that reason I won't write much (otherwise it's never gonna happen). Just as much as this: Mont-aux-Sources in Royal Natal National Park (Kwazulu Natal) is probably the best day trek you will find in South Africa. And don't get fooled by all these greedy tour operators - you CAN go by yourself. In fact, it's an easy one, provided you are free from fear of hight since you have to climb a vertical chain ladder (guess that's the most tricky part), but other than that if you're reasonably fit you won't have any trouble. Get a lift to Sentinel Car Park - it's kind of far away from the Amphitheater (2 hrs one way), so you're better off ... read more

We decided to stop off before Cape Town to sample some of the local wine. The Mountain Breeze campsite was set amidst very tall trees, there were mountains in the background but difficult to see, you know you can never see the mountain for the trees! (sorry). Lots of wildlife again, but this time it was squirrels and rabbits, although I don't think the rabbits were of the wild type. All the wine tours were fully booked so we decided to take our own. We started off in Stellenbosch itself for coffee, just to get the feel of the place, it has a lovely vibe, I suppose because of the University and winelands. We went to the Blauwklippen (I hope I spelt that right) for wine tasting. We got a wineglass to keep engraved with the ... read more

Day 5 of habitat house 1 was crazy, we had to catch up all of the time missed due to the wheather, first we had to do the roof which was so much fun. We were hammering in planks while balancing on beams, we got to work with really nice community members/builders and broke a habitat record by finishing and entire roof before lunch. this was probably the most dangerous day of the build but luckly nothing went wrong, so of the volunteers where very scared of hights though. After lunch we then did the internal walls but I had to leave early again for work. Today we had to go through to the community hall in order to have a last bit of training, and to find out if we were crew leaders or not ... read more

Day 5 in Cape Town, in a week in which we've found out why the first Dutch settlers called it the "Cape of Storms". Every night since Tuesday we've listened to howling gales at our 11th floor window. On Wednesday, driving rain came down all day, and there were floods elsewhere in the province. This has meant that we haven't been able to go up Table Mountain (shrouded in clouds since day one), haven't made it to Robben Island where Mandela was imprisoned (the boats can't sail when it's windy), and haven't made it out to the Cape of Good Hope to see the penguins (there was zero visiblity the day we were supposed to be going). Oh well, at least we're not at work, and we've still got one day left... We did, however, have ... read more

On Monday we flew from Cape Town to Johannesburg, where we're staying with a friend, Renata (we worked together in the OT dept at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, about 18months ago) - has been lovely catching up with her and her boyfriend, Nuno, who also worked at the JR, in the Physio dept. We managed to time our arrival well to coincide with Renata's Birthday, so went out for dinner on Monday night with some of her family and friends. We've also seen around Wits University (where Renata studied), survived driving through the Central Business District (despite Renata being unable to promise us that we wouldn't be shot), and seen the Neslon Mandela Bridge. Yesterday we went to the Apartheid Museum - took a long time to get round, but very interesting, and then spent ... read more

Next stop was just outside Beaufort West. The Karoo National Park is a lovely site, really 5 star and they are still working on it. We arrived in the pouring rain so waited for it to stop before starting to set up camp. We put up the gazebo before deciding that actually that site over there looked better, so we started to move but on second looks decided that the site opposite looked even better. It really is true that the longest part of setting up camp is agreeing where to put the tent. Eventually we set up, you note that I don't say pitch the tent because we have decided that sleeping in the cab is very comfortable, and why bother with canvas when we have everything we need including radio, light, air conditioning (yes ... read more

Ok so I know its not very far from where I live but it feels like a whole different world, for the first time ever I went into a township, Mfuleni just outside of Cape Town. I decided to give two weeks of my time before leaving for thailand (its the least I could do) to building 2 house for the less privledged by joining the Habitat for Humanity project. During this week I am training by taking part in the building of a house and next week I will hopefully get to help crew lead the building of another house. So far I have been for the theory training and tour of the community, and i have spent one day building the external walls of the 3 x 5m house (2 rooms, a toilet, kitchen ... read more
