The start of a crazy adventure of six students setting out to explore their own country. Five will set out in Johannesburg onto Colesburg to Beauford West, where the sixth member will join them at a very inconvenient 3am. From their they will set out along the coast - starting at Wilderness, ending in P.E. where two of our group will have to say goodbye. The remaining four then head to Hogsback, then back to the coast at Coffee Bay and work east until Pietermaritzburg. ... read more

The "Rainbow Nation", as Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela describe South Africa, is a country rich in culture, ethnicity, minerals, agriculture, economic wealth, and beauty. They have the largest Caucasian (9.2%), Indian (2.5%) and mixed races (8.9%) population in Africa, and the Black South African community (79.5%) is comprised over 9 ethnic groups, the majority of which being Zulu, Xhosa, and Basotho. There are 11 official languages (English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa, and 7 other tribal African languages) as well as 8 non-official languages. It is argued that there is no single culture in South Africa due to its ethnic diversity. South Africa's land is full of diamonds and gold! It is the world's leader in gold production, headquartered in Johannesburg. Jo'burg is home to the largest diamond ever found, the Cullinan Diamond, a mere 3,106 carats. ... read more

Moved on to the Tsitsikama National Park. On booking in we were allocated a campsite which always makes us a little nervous as you are never sure where you will be put. Driving down towards the camp we saw a lot of caravans right on the front which brought visions of strong winds - the wind is the enemy of the camper because as long as you can keep the tent up then you can stay dry, but once the wind has blown it down you have no hope. As suspected, our site was right on the front, again just metres from the waves, absolutely beautiful if the weather behaves itself. First we decided to take the trail to the river mouth over the suspension bridge only to be stopped by signs saying that it was ... read more

Port Elizabeth is described by Lonely Planet as a charmless sort of place with not much in the way of things to do, despite its self-promotion as "the friendly city". It seemed pretty friendly to us on the whole, but it was perhaps short on spectacles. "Don't walk in the centre at night", our cabbie advised us unnecessarily, as we drove through it and deftly activated the central locking as we stopped at the lights. "It's nice during the day but at night they turn into monsters". We'd worked that out a couple of days earlier during an exploratory walk in, and quick cab ride back. We were there, of course, for the second one-dayer. My suggestion of going to the SA Airforce Museum was swiftly vetoed as a group activity, which left eating and drinking, ... read more

Hi guys this is gonna be my last entry now. After an amazing ten weeks, nine countries, fifteenthousand kilometres through africa and sixty nights in a tent i have finally made it to Capetown. After leaving Swakopmund, we headed for a camp site in the Namibian Desert, close to the famous dunefield where Dune 45 and Dune 17 are located (the number stands for their rank in size - Dune 17 would be the 17th biggest dune in the world). Tuesday was a driving day and very boring, but there was a promise of seeing the sunrise on Dune 45 the next morning. Unfortunately, we missed it. We took a wrong turn and had parked our truck in the middle of nowhere, looking at a very dull sunrise on a piece of nomansland. After asking around ... read more
