... to being a New Zealander said Mike C. "In fact I can't think of any... but this is one." We are in Port Elizabeth, preparing to watch the NZers play SA in the fifth game of the tour. NZ have lost all 4 previous games, the last two by tiny margins and the first two by country miles. Our preparation involves large steaks and relaxing by the pool. And waiting for happy hour (free drinks from 5-7). We flew yesterday in from Joberg which is distinctly unlovely, as is very well known. We hopped on the plane at Joberg, and an obviously kiwi guy sat down beside us in the back row. "Planes aren't getting any bigger", he said. "Here for the cricket?," I asked. "Yep, I'm commentating". It was DK Morrison, former fast ... read more

It is now 3,5 months that I work as a volunteer for the Knysna Elephant Park and not 1 day did I not like being here. We are setting up a volunteer program and that is proven to be a challenge but very rewarding. I love wildlife and by setting up this volunteer program I feel like I can give something back to the elephants. We have taken their habitat by claiming it ours, we have broken down their rituals by building fences on their migration route and we have taken their spirits by killing their family members. The 10 elephants that we have living here in a controlled-free-range-environment are 10 elephants rescued from being killed but what about the other 6000?????? The Kruger National Park has 6000 elephants to many and what will happen to ... read more

So im finally here in South Africa! WooHoo! Ive been here a couple of days now and managed to find an internet cafe so i can keep in contact with all of ya. So... the LONG flight actually wasn't as bad as i was expecting it to be although we did get quite a bit of turbulence! But we were able to see the Eiffel tower and some lightening storms from the plane, so that was pretty cool! Once we landed the weather was not as hot as i was expecting, in face its been pretty crazy! One minute it will be really hot and sunny, then all of a sudden it will change, the sky will get cloudy, the wind will pick up, there will be really heavy rain (with the biggest rain drops i ... read more

Since his last entry, Rich has been banned from further blogs until he improves his efficiency. His skills carryover to SMSing as well, it took the man 32min today to punch out what apparently is a "Short Message". Unfortunately, I lack the structure of Richard. If we weren't physios, he would be mathematician (Clinical and always right) and I would be a poet (drunk and never really making sense). We have done lots of things in the last week or so... including some physio work. Our first day at the institute was... amazing. We watched the honours students doing their research presentations in the morning. Their communication skills and knowledge were all very impressive, perhaps even a little bit daunting for the the two starstruck Aussie boys in the back row wearing their matching stripey tops ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Sedgefield November 29th 2007

We tried to book into the Wilderness Parks Board site but it was closed because of the recent floods, they won't be open until just before Christmas. Another site we tried was the same so we had to go a bit further to Sedgefield before we could find a dry spot! It was a lovely camp not far from the beach and next to the Goukamma Nature Reserve. The bird life was plenty and we were amused each night to watch the guinea fowl go to roost in an incredibly tall tree and hop up branch by branch until they were right at the top - I hope they hold on tight! Because of all the rain in the area recently - just a week before the main road through here was completely closed due to ... read more

After three months in Africa we're back to playing catch up again. On Sept. 10th we landed in Johannesburg, South Africa where we met up with our friends Craig and Kimmy who had come to visit us. After checking out the suburbs of Joberg on the morning of our first day we picked up a rental car and headed out to the town of Nelspruit, just south of Kruger National Park. We entered the park the next day at the Melelane gate at the southern end of the park and checked into our roundhouse accommodations at the Melelane Camp and then headed out for our first game drive. We drove around both the paved and gravel streets of the southern part of the park and saw tons of animals including crocs, elephants, impala, klipspringers, warthogs, ... read more

Found a lovely campsite at Onrus which is just outside Hermanus, we set up camp with a front seat view of the ocean, just metres from the crashing waves and hoped that the wind would not blow too hard. Drove straight into Hermanus, we didn't hold out much hope of seeing any whales as we had been hearing that they had been leaving and the bad weather had moved them out of the bay as well. We were rewarded by seing a couple of whales in the bay, not too close and they were moving out but at least we did see them. The following morning we went back to a lovely cafe we had found the night before with huge windows looking right over the bay, ordered a breakfast, Andy went for the mega one ... read more

Drove to Cape Town and went first to Hout Bay and tried to get round Chapmans Peak but it was closed after just a 5km stretch. We then went across to Muizenberg and found a campsite not far from the beach, set up camp and then headed back into Cape Town. It was a beautiful day, sunny and hot, which of course meant that the queue for the mountain cable car was a mile long. We decided to take our chances another day and made straight for the V & A Waterfront. First on the agenda was a lovely seafood platter, a bit expensive because of where it was but you have to eat seafood in Cape Town and it was delicious. A couple of local glasses of wine finished it off nicely. We had a ... read more

It's been a long time comin', and no thanks to slow internet connections and flooding internet shops (see below) we can finally tell you about South Africa… what can we say? Well, a lot, so let’s get started. We arrived in South Africa at Johannesburg airport early in the morning. After getting our rental car we headed straight out of town. No one wants to spend too much time in Johannesburg, what with the highest crime rate in the WORLD, even though the travel guides swear you should give it a try. While Chris remembered how to drive on the left side of the road and I figured out where we were going (not being on insurance and having no left-hand-driving experience means I am master navigator) we realized it was awfully hot for 8 am. ... read more
