"There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered." -Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom And here is the end. After five months of being in Africa, living in Africa, and learning to accept Africa, I will now return back to the US. My emotions are everywhere. Stellenbosch has become my home. The people that I have met here have become my family. The idea of leaving both behind tears me apart. I will miss the mountains, the beautiful natural beauty, the easy-going atmosphere, and the lifelong friends that I have made here. During our final dinner, Hestea told us that South Africa is going to follow us wherever we go. Nothing could be more true than this. I have had experiences here that ... read more

So, South African winter is in full force. Which basically means that it is COLD (about 60 F) and raining. All the time. Hot and Sunny Stellenbosch is no more. So, What do you do when the going gets tough and all it does is rains? You take off for sunnier, warmer places... like Mozambique. Tomorrow a groups of friends and I are taking off on a flight to Johannesburg, and from there we depart for Kruger National Park, Botswana, Zambia and then finally Mozambique. We will be gone in the bush and to the beach for 16 days: a nice end of the semester journey and escape from the rain with good people. We are all so excited. When we return back to Stellenbosch, I will have only 8 days left before returning back to ... read more

Hmmmm, meeting at the BP garage at Cape Town Airport sounded too deceptively simple for my liking and I was right. We could see the sodding garage as we went round and round in circles around it but could we get to the bleeding entrance? Could we chuff. During one of our rotations, I’d say it was sheer coincidence but really it was only a matter of time, we got beeped at by the guy we were meant to be meeting and the other one executed a swift u-turn and open sesame, we found the garage entrance. We signed new paperwork, pointed expertly at the new car’s marks and scratches followed by nodding sagely, and got back on the road quick smart before it could get dark and the other one complain he couldn’t see.... read more

But still some time for more wine tasting! Franschoek, our original plan is off the menu as its too far and there are road works so instead we go to Boschendal, which I’d heard good things about (not the wine necessarily but the setting - perhaps I’ve not really understood the point of this wine tasting lark?!). It’s a sprawling estate including a cafe and restaurant as well as vineyards and a handful of buildings in the Cape Dutch style. You can order picnic hampers to eat on the shaded lawns but we weren’t that organised and they were sold out so we ate in the cafe, opposite the fragrant herb garden, and gorged ourselves on blue cheese, brie, fresh bread and homemade lemonade. Hubba hubba. feed me now... For the wine tasting, we sat at ... read more

Cars+ us = curse. Leaving Rustenberg along the motorway, we hear a thunk as the other one overtakes and a big dumper lorry passes us going in the other direction. Peering at the windscreen we see nothing and figure it whatever it was must have landed on the roof. Parking at the hotel we look again and right behind the rear view mirror is a crack the size of a two pence piece (or one rupee!). Great. For once, I thank the other one’s 10 rand a day decision to take extra insurance for tyres and windscreen - YES insurance does have a point! We still though have another ten days of driving to do and don’t want it to get worse. We call the car hire place and find out that they have no ... read more

the indian ocean it was not Stellenbosch, in the heart of the wine lands was our next stop and the site of our most fancy accommodation, De Kraal Lodge (see reviews also). Set among botanical gardens, our room was massive with bijou living area and a welcome bottle of wine and the place had a pool too. Hot from our non air con car, I was well up for a dip, until I wagered a toe in the water and shrieked like a big girl’s blouse. It was the coldest water ever. I tried again to knee deep and ran back out, the other one thinking it hilarious. I was determined though and third time lucky I flung myself in, flailed like an out of control Octopus, screamed, gasped, tried to act casual, gave up and ... read more

no the glasses hadn't been full... After the bracing dip, there was just about enough left of the afternoon for a little wine tasting. With the clock against us I put aside Rustenberg winery for the next day and we randomly chose a place signposted on the motorway. With my usual customary notice of ‘quick turn right, no left here’ followed by bluster and grumble from the other one, we turned into Delaires and were waved on way up the flower bedecked driveway by security. view from the entrance looking out Stepping out of the car was like stepping into an episode of Brothers & Sisters. A grand terrace was abuzz with lunchtime diners eating under oversized shades, while statues lined the entrance to the minimalist lobby whose massive bronze doors yielded a vision of monochrome ... read more

Last night, an Afrikaans Wedding Reception was taking place, so the heavily advertised rules regarding noise and alcohol were waived. Apparently, the music was going on way past midnight, although I was oblivious! This morning, Sunday, the silence was broken at 07h00 by some Afrikaaner kid running around shouting “Get Up!”. So, we did. Washing, dressing and, seeing as this was the last morning (for some) with the tent, brushing them out and letting them dry before packing them. Consequently, we were not fully packed until 09h15, over an hour longer than normal! We drove the few short miles into Franschhoek, the town we'd not had a chance to view yesterday. Parking at the top of the town, we had the opportunity to walk down the main street at a leisurely pace. The French Corner came ... read more

I know it has been a long time since I have updated this thing. I'm sorry for that y'all. Since my last update I have done the Garden Route, roadtripped to Durban, contemplated bungee jumping off of the highest bungee in the world (and then chickened out), and seen Nelson Mandela's jail cell at Robben Island. I will eventually fill you all in. There is something more important that I need to do at the moment. -To Dad and Shannon- Dad, Shannon, I have no doubt in my mind that I would not be where I am today without your loving guidance. You guys kicked me in the ass, pushed me to make this whole semester come together, even when I thought that there was no way it could all happen. You have been nothing but ... read more

My lips are pursed, my teeth are purple and I have grown a mushroom top from all the eating... this is what three days in the wine lands does to a person. We underestimated our drive from Knysna to Stellenbosch and arrived at night and got lost again as the street signs were virtually non existence (remind me to thank our car rental company that never gave us our GPS). After stopping to ask for directions we finally found our way through the valley to our guesthouse, Sugarbird Manor. In the morning we got to see the striking view of the valley from our infinity pool (which would be our life saver for the next couple days when temperatures would hit 35 degrees). We hit the road after getting some recommendations on the good wineries to ... read more
