Our last few days in Cape Town... We checked into a guest house out in Camps Bay, surrounded by beautiful white sand beaches and the majestic 12 apostles in the background. In fact Camps Bay was just in the news a few weeks ago for a shark attack that had killed one person. We haven't see any sharks but have seen a pod of dolphins here and enjoy the people watching here...the buff, the beautiful and the fabulous.... Our last couple days were spend sporadically at the beach and hanging out with our two favourite American friends, Glen and Corrin. They have been in Cape Town now for 3 weeks and have finally gotten their Toyota Landcruiser. Their plan is to drive all the way to Cairo (and maybe back) over the next year, (see mom ... read more

My lips are pursed, my teeth are purple and I have grown a mushroom top from all the eating... this is what three days in the wine lands does to a person. We underestimated our drive from Knysna to Stellenbosch and arrived at night and got lost again as the street signs were virtually non existence (remind me to thank our car rental company that never gave us our GPS). After stopping to ask for directions we finally found our way through the valley to our guesthouse, Sugarbird Manor. In the morning we got to see the striking view of the valley from our infinity pool (which would be our life saver for the next couple days when temperatures would hit 35 degrees). We hit the road after getting some recommendations on the good wineries to ... read more

After Addo we set out for a 3 hour drive to the city of Knysna, touted as one of the most spectacular cities on the garden route. It feels like cottage country here, similar to White Rock, BC but set on a lagoon with two islands, Thesen Island and Leisure Island. We opted for a self catering apartment at the Knysna Stays, giving us a chance to have a break from eating out and to catch up on some laundry. The next morning we headed down to the waterfront to check out the shopping and to find a wifi spot and grab some groceries. Lloyd provided us with picnic hamper and advised us to head to Noetzie beach as it was beautiful day at 27 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. We headed to ... read more

Note - more pictures to be added, wireless is too slow here so check back soon! ************************************************* After our fill of surf and sun in J'bay Ryan and I headed to Addo Park via Port Elizabeth. We decided after all of our backpacking we wanted to stay in something morel luxurious. I had booked a game drive and accommodation package through Woodall Lodge just outside Addo. Although I knew it would be nice, I really had no idea what a 5 star place would be like here as it seems star ratings vary across the world. We pulled up to the iron gates, were let in a greeted with cold towels and had a beverage overlooking there pond on the deck while we were briefed on our 2 days ahead. So far... excellent. Next up we ... read more

After our long and stressful drive (at night) with roads not well marked we arrive in J'bay and checked into the Backpackers here. It was umm... interesting complete stains our sheets and mosquitoes that kept us up all night. But hey we are on vacation. We got up that morning and headed to the beach and met some South Africans that challenged us to beach volleyball. After three hours, we were tired and burnt. The sun here is so much stronger than back home. Even with sunscreen on we looked like lobsters. The rest of the day we took it easy and picked up a bottle of pinotage (got to love the cheap fantastic wine here) and headed out to Supertubes to watch the real surfers for a sundowner. Unfortunately there were no surfers dolphins close ... read more

Ok time to catch up! With our Argentinian friend in tow, Nico, we headed out on the N2 and passed the Cape Flats which is all the shanty town of Cape Town. Beautiful in its own way. Most of the houses are built from sheet metal in a variety of colors. It was funny to see that some of the houses had satellite TV... We decided to do the drive along the scenic route 62. It's an area of magnificent landscapes and towering cliffs, crystal clear streams and an abundance of trees and indigenous flora - all contribute to make Paarl, Wellington, the Breede River Valley, Klein Karoo and Langkloof some of South Africa's most diverse regions. Majestic mountains, scenic passes, rivers, vineyards and orchards, as well as the multitude of attractions, provided us with an ... read more

Sorry for the brief hiatus. Ryan and I were both under the weather for a few days. Tomorrow at our next stop we have free wirless so we plan to catch up on the blogging. In the interim - our last day in Cape Town we spent on Robben Island. Robben Island is an island in Table Bay, seven kilometres off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa. The name is Dutch for "seal island". Robben Island and is roughly 3.3 km long north-south, and 1.9 km wide. It is of particular note as it was here that future South African President Nelson Mandela and future South African President Kgalema Motlanthe, alongside many other political prisoners, spent decades imprisoned during the apartheid era. The island was also used as a leper colony and animal quarantine station. ... read more

The sunny, windy, charming and cosmopolitan city of Cape Town. It is cultural, vibrant and is the jewel of SA. I am in love and could stay here for ever. We are bunking at an amazing place and you meet so many traveller's around the world - just fantastic. I can see this is a place where you just get stuck! It also doesn't help that the weather has been high 28-31 and the wine is outstanding...a deadly combination. We picked up a bottle of Goast Du Roam that would cost $15 CAN for $5 here. Needless to say, we will see if my liver will hold up as we try all the new labels. Our first night here we decided to head to Newlands stadium to take in some Rugby. Cape Town Stormers vs. New ... read more

We are still adjusting to the time change. After not sleeping the night we got up for a 6 am start to do the border crossing from Botswana to Namibia via ferry. Chris, a local and the great guide, assisted us in getting to our border crossing and picked up. Along the way we enjoyed the country side with many neighboring villages. At one point we saw a family of 15 baboons on the road (the animals lay on the road here as the asphalt keeps them warm here). Just two minutes later we spotted a cyclist...Chris told us either the baboons would flee or attack. The border crossing was interesting. I think there were 5 other white people there. They have been working in Livingstone building another orphanage with a local church. There people that ... read more

Finally internet that is fast - sorry for the long delay in postings. ************************************************ We arrived in Livingstone Zambia on a British Airways flight (Boeing 300) that had 20 people...including crew if you can believe it. I am shocked they didn't cancel the flight. We arrived at Chanters Lodge, our home for the next 3 nights. This is no five stars, or any star for that matter. The hotel has a quaint garden and pool but the rooms leave something to yearn for. In fact, Ryan refuses to have a shower in our bathroom and you never know what sort of critter you are going to find or if your electricity will work, but the place is great to organized activities and meet fellow travelers. There is a huge disparity of accommodation here, you can either ... read more
