Our first night of the trip was spent in Port Elizabeth. We just stayed for the one night since it’s so close to Grahamstown we can always go back if we want to. The Baz Bus picked us up there around 6am, and we were off to Plettenberg Bay. It’s a cute little beach town, and we were staying at Albergo Backpackers. Our first day there was pretty cloudy and rainy, but it was our only crappy weather day of the entire trip so I can’t complain. We decided to do a hike on the Robberg Peninsula, and were joined by a few German kids from the hostel. The hike lasted for about two hours, and the terrain varied from sand dunes to practically rock climbing. We were pretty grateful for the lack of sunshine because ... read more

So waking up at 4am is never fun but when you have a 14 hour drive in front of you just have to stuck it up and hope no-one talks to you! Lots of stunning scenery and finally getting out of the fog of joburg later, we find ourselves at the start of a road that says "road closed - flood damage" of course we still go down it following a slight;ly insane afrikaans guy who said it should be fine; and Johan not wanting to go the long way round and wanting to show me the views from the prince alfreds pass, thought it should be safe enough! So they weren't kidding with the flood damage warning, the tarmac road had literally be eaten by the river that ran next to it; what was a ... read more

SUPER!!! Leider ... read more

Flew from Lusaka to Port Elizabeth on Thursday - flight from Lusaka to Johannesburg was fine but missed our flight from Jo'burg to P.E as it was brought forwards and we were still on the flight from Lusaka. However, fortunately managed to get the next flight. Now in Plettenburg Bay - arrived here earlier this afternoon after driving from Port Elizabeth where we stayed in a good backpackers' hostel in the old part of the town Thursday and Friday night (the owner picked us up from the airport, drove us around the town and collected us from the town whenever we wanted...and we only had to pay a minimal cost for the airport transport. He also arranged our car hire for us and took us to pick it up). We've found a good campsite to stay ... read more

Tsitsikamma National Parl We visited Tsitsikamma National Park on route to Plettenburg Bay. Unfortunately the Storms River Mouth suspension bridge was closed as it been on fire two weeks ago and the repairs had not been completed. However, driving down to the rest camp on the coast was still well worth a visit and we enjoyed exploring all the rock pools and our picnic overlooking the waves crashing merciously upon the rocks. Bloukrans Bridge Most backpackers jump off the Baz Bus at Storms River with only one thing in mind: to brave the world's highest bungy jump. Maybe we are just getting old and boring, but neither of us fancied throwing ourselves off the mega high road bridge, into the deep ravine at Bloukrans. We chuckled away as we watched a few nutters scream down into ... read more

hello! My last couple of days in Jeffery's Bay has been a lot of fun with a bit of action. I did the surfing to begin with, we horse riding the morning after with too much alcohol consumed the night before.. The horse riding was absolutely amazing! A 2 hour long ride with 5 of us and all had done horse riding before, including me, but not in a very long time.. I managed to get the most energetic one of course, not wanting to stand still or be calm for one sec. We rode through beautiful nature with small lakes till we got to huge sand dunes, almost like the dessert.. God the horses got wild and there was no way back from there.. It was pretty spectecular! We then arrived at the beach and ... read more

Hey Annika, Just thought I'd sent a note to say "Happy birthday to you" (melodic)........ I was thinking of you today as we were doing our game drive at the Rhino Base Camp. It was fantastic - wish you were here! (Have you decided where you are coming to meet us yet?) : ) We are having a hard time leaving Plettenburg Bay, we are really loving it here - so so much to do. Looks like we are leaving in the morning though for an ostrich farm in Outdshoorn where you can ride ostriches. They also have this amazing cave system called Cango Caves that should be really interesting. Jordan is trying to convince me to let him go skydiving as he is allowed to here in South Africa and I thought about it for ... read more

Hey there, The dolphins and whales were such an amazing experience that I thought I would put the pictures on its own page and those of you that wanted to see them could. The experience was unforgettable. The pictures don't really look like much until they are maximized. I originally made this page because I wanted to put the video on it, but the webpage does not support my format which is really too bad because I have some amazing footage that pictures just can't capture. Those suckers are capital F-A-S-T, hard to catch on camera. Being there was magical. They liked the boat being there and totally played and frolicked with us. They would actually come up beside the boat and visit. It was scary when they went under the boat though, I didn't want ... read more

Excited about our imminent roadtrip, we headed for the Sunflower Stop Backpackers to collect our newest recruit Barnaby before embarking on our journey down the Garden Route. Barns is a good old bean who we met at the Boss party the week before and who is travelling north through Africa - he convinced us of his Duke of Edinburgh triumphs, so we figured he could be a useful guy to have around. As well as picking up a severely hungover Barns we had another couple of guys tag on who were heading up to Durban, and so it began. First and foremost ... tunes. We had trekked around Long Street the previous day to find a cassette converter for the I-pod and had each compiled a play list (as mental notes) to play - how gutted ... read more

So the ride to Plett was a long hot one. We had a rental car - I was driving with Mike and Chapala - and it was a blistering hot kind of day. Sun coming in, sweat pouring down. We left at 10am, stopped a few times for drinks and snacks and made it to Plett by 5pm. In the meantime we looked at all the scenery on the garden route, lots of beaches and such, and had some good conversation. They were both great to talk to. When we got to Plett, I called Susie to let her know I was in. Susie works at the zoo in Boston where I was zookeeping - we somehow hadn't met but she stayed in touch when she found out about my trip. She's in South Africa visiting ... read more
