Background: After the British seized the Cape of Good Hope area in 1806, many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to found their own republics. The discovery of diamonds (1867) and gold (1886) spurred wealth and immigration and intensified the subjugation of the native inhabitants. The Boers resisted British encroachments, but were defeated in the Boer War (1899-1902). The resulting Union of South Africa operated under a policy of apartheid - the separate development of the races. The 1990s brought an end to apartheid politically and ushered in black majority rule.

Hike up the Mountain in the Town Early Wednesday morning, it's cold and windy, not favourable to climb up Table Mountain, so Shandy, Jocelyn and I set off for a morning walk and maybe a swim in Kalk Bay, just a couple of kms south of Muizenberg along the coast. Since moving into the new house we've realised how much we've missed the internet!! So sorry for not keeping up to date with all the events and your lovely comments. We moved in to the new house on Monday 07th. The volunteer house is gorgeous and our new roommate, Lara is fab!!! (She's special too!!) Up until Wednesday night, there were 6 of us in the house.
