A few observations in my recent trip to Rwanda and Nairobi: 1. You are supposed to have Yellow fever vaccination before entering these countries, but no one at immigration is bothered to check. 2. There is no loo on the airports after security check. So get in at the last minute. 3. Do not exchange currency at airports. You will get better rates in town. 4. Start negotiating, the moment you get down. They expect it. 5. Bike taxis in Rwanda are safe and cheap. Try atleast once in your trip. 6. If you are vegetarian, ask for Indian food. 7. The African women carry big fruits. Control yourself. 8. Shop for curios? Bargain hard - you may bring down the price from 3800 to 800 or less. 9. Rwanda is absolutely safe. Stay careful in ... read more

Hej allesammen. Puha, dagene suser afsted hernede!

So we spent the night at the MC house. It was there that I got to have something that I have missed for over a month, a warm shower! It was so nice. I spent time to scrub every part of my body. It wasn't the hottest shower ever but it was better than cold. That day we followed some of the AIESEC Kenya interns to their projects in the slums. Before going they warned us that we should wear shoes and not sandals because of all of the mud. We all took this comment lightly considering from what we had seen Kampala is way muddier/dustier (depending how much it rains) and just overall more dirty than Nairobi. We headed out in the morning which was chillier than we were used to. We took the matatu ... read more

Hello friends and relations, It's Friday again and I'm back at the computer in Nairobi. We returned to Gathanji on Monday morning, still basking in Spain's glory, nailbiter, though it was. For those of you who might be interested in looking for our location on Google Earth, we're staying in a village called Gathanji which is between Kiambu and Githinguri outside of Nairobi. We've come to call our residence there "The Pink Palace" owing to the bubble gum pink colored walls. Must have been a sale on pink? Or perhaps just someone's favorite color. At first it was a bit jarring but now we're accustomed to it. We spent Monday and Tuesday back in the nursery and primary school attached to the orphanage. We had asked the teachers what they needed from Nairobi and they reluctantly ... read more

Hej allesammen. Kram fra Pernille.... read more

Hej allesammen.

July 10, 2010 Hello everyone, Thanks for all the messages and words of love and encouragement. I will try to fill in some of the details of the last week but time and space have taken on new dimensions and you'll just have to bear with me. After I last wrote last weekend, we watched more World Cup, celebrated with Spain and slept late on Sunday morning along with Ben, Maria, and Camilo. Then we went to a lovely spot for brunch called the River Cafe. It has extensive gardens and a pond full of purple water lily-like flowers and impossibly colorful birds. The restaurant was open-air, gracious and full of comfortable furniture. We sat at a big round table and ate to our heart's content. The highlights were the coffee and the delicious fresh juices. ... read more

Hi everyone! For everyone who is interested in reading about what the hell I'm doing in Kenya. First things first. For everyone who doesn't know me, I'm Brendan ten Velthuis and currently in my third year of university at the VU in Amsterdam, Holland. Via the organization Uptoyoutoo I went to Kenya to do some volunteerswork/research/internship at Yike for around 6 weeks. After 6 weeks I will do about a week of travel where after I will gloriously return to home to the warm arms of my family and especially my lovely girlfriend. Yike is an non-profit organization based in Nairobi where they facilitate groups of youth( 15 years to 30) with their businesses or whatever. They currently have around 60 groups in their 3 year programs where they mostly teach them about how to be ... read more

At any given time, Kenya usually ranks among the most corrupt countries in the world. Over half of Kenyans are living in poverty, and over seven million of those people are said to be living in extreme poverty. It's a shocking amount for one of Africa's most wealthy and developed nations. Especially considering that much poorer neighboring countries don't have the same issues. A Kenyan worker making minimum wage earns less than $2 per day, and the average per capita income is around $360 in a year. Over the last thirty years, the gap between rich and poor has been growing, and the middle class has been dwindling. With those kind of wages, it's impossible to afford any kind of rural housing recognized by the government. So millions of people have to move to slums, where ... read more
