Hej allesammen.

Dear Friends, Jambo! We are now in Kenya with our friends Ben and Maria and Camilo. We just suffered two sad blows - last night when Ghana lost their heartbreaker and tonight when Argentina got crushed by Germany but other than that we are doing really well. We had a whirlwind trip to London on the hottest weekend of the year. There, as everywhere we've been, World Cup football fever was rampant. We gave up any hope of being anything other than what we were - American tourists on holiday - and took those on again/off again double decker red tour buses all over the city. We saw all the major sites, ate in Brick Lane with Breda and John for a reunion with the Irish chicks. Highlights were the Tate Modern and walking across Tower ... read more

It’s a Wonderful Life Ok, not always. But at this moment in time, for me, it is. I am thoroughly wrapped up in the love of my husband of almost one year (July 3rd will be our first anniversary) and my two month old boy. Johnny and Jonathan…the men of my dreams. The beginning of marriage and motherhood have been great! Since graduation my heart had been to go to the nations…specifically Romania…then Kenya in order to love some of the orphans of the world. Worldwide, it is estimated that more than 15 million children under 18 have been orphaned as a result of AIDS. Around 11.6 million of these children live in sub-Saharan Africa according to UNAIDS (2008). If you google the statistics of orphans on google it is overbearing. However, knowing we ARE doing ... read more

Possibility: a future prospect or potential, capable of existing or happening I love the feeling you get before a big event or period in life where you have planned so much for and thought so much about it, but then have absolutely no idea what to expect or how its going to turn out. When you know that the possibilities are just endless and that anything could happen. It such a rush! That’s where I am at right now. I have spent the last 4 months preparing to lead this program for WYI, and ultimately about 2 years before that dreaming about what it would be like…and it all begins today!! How god dam exciting  Francesca (the amazing women who is also leading a 5 week program at the same time as me) and I ... read more

I left the hustle and bustle of Kampala on the night coach to Nairobi to avoid paying a night's accommodation - forever the stinge! Fortunately I was sat next to a really interesting man who was a Bishop in southern Sudan. Sudan has always been somewhere which i've been keen to find out more about because Dad was born out there but currently not the best place to visit. The North and South are very divided in so many aspects, language, religion, landscape, resources and the South are all looking forward to January when they hope that the referendum will be passed to split the country in two. The South will then be able to lead a life free from war, something most Sudanese people have never experienced since civil war broke out in 1955. The ... read more

We are woken at 6:25am by the night butler with a juice for Tim and Hot Chocolate for me to drink while we wait for the giraffes to wake up. MORNING VISITORS We have a little bucket of giraffe food to feed them if they come by. So we open all our windows (even though it’s cold), and then it happens - my hot chocolate is sitting on the window sill as I open the window the locking arm pushes it off and onto the bed! Only about an inch came out but it seemed to go a long way! So we will now be known as the laundry couple! Then we see them coming through the trees, we ended up counting 8 of the resident 10 giraffes, slowly, slowly some make their way to the ... read more

After breakfast Francis meets us to take us to the post office to send back all our souvenirs acquired so far and also my boots now that they have done their job I’m glad to be rid of them! We then fly to Nairobi, Kenya for our stay at the Giraffe Manor. We are sitting next to a guy who is involved in Security in Kenya and he was nice enough to write down not only a lot of things to do in Nairobi, but also restaurants, his car driver’s phone number in case we don’t have anyone to meet us and to top it off, he wrote down his mobile number in case we got stuck at any time! Truly, this is the continent that believes in ‘kindness to strangers’! He also warned of the ... read more

Being the lazy bums we are we had booked ourselves on an overland truck tour for the last part of our trip round East Africa. We thought it would make safaris and gorilla permits and all that palava easier to organise and cheaper because of group rates etc. It probably was an OK idea and I had been looking forward to my only worries being having to concentrate on looking out the window and remembering to wave at small children on the side of the road...but then we got the worst trip leader in Africa and it all became hard work again! Not only could he not communicate, count or think logically, he was also a pathalogical liar who would tie himself in knots to get out of apologising for his incompetencies. But enough of that, ... read more

May 2nd In the morning we had the usual breakfast, some tea with milk and eggs before we started the day. Paul, Victor, Maria and I headed for the city center to make our way to Nairobi National Park. After arriving at the bus station we met up with Victor’s daughter Yunis and his girlfriend Gladys. Yunis and Maria get along very well and it was nice to see how the family got along, they made me feel so part of it as well which made it really nice. After getting snacks and drinks for the day we got on a matatu (a minibus transport) and headed for the park. The drive was nice, on the outskirts of the town from the look of it, and we passed by the stadium we had been at the ... read more
