With some sadness the doors of the Assosa Showcase cinema have closed for the very last time. Opened to all VSO volunteers and Ethiopian friends in February 2008, it started controversially when the "wrong" Sweeny Todd was presented to an expectant crowd! Not the Hollywood Todd of Johnny Depp, but the - rather less sexy - BBC Todd of Ray Winstone! Over the two years a variety of Ethiopians, volunteers, NGO staff and visiting Ferengi have graced the armchairs and sofa, watching Oscar winners and nominees (No Country for Old Men, The Wrestler), fun and adventure (Pirates of the Carribean, Hancock, National Treasure), animated classics (Wall-E, Finding Nemo) to visual eye-poppers (The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded). Nothing more than a borrowed LCD projector, some rearranged furniture and a laptop plugged into a stereo system; and ... read more

Wow - I can't believe I have managed to create an entry on the same day the event happened! In fact, even better, I have created an entry BEFORE the event actually happened where you are! While you guys are warming up for Auld Lang Syne, kissing marathons and Jools Holland we have passed our milestone and are heading for bed with a nice cup of coco. Well, a bottle of St George actually, but it is a holiday tomorrow after all...er...well maybe unofficially. For Ethiopians the new year (or "addis amit") is in September, with Christmas on January 7th. It's no wonder people here get confused. I have been bombarded with very kind - but somewhat premature - text messages wishing me a Happy New Year since Christmas Eve. Then again, one of the Ferengis ... read more

...or happy Ferengi Christmas! The greetings are only 3 days late but the Internet connection here has been taking so long to upload even one photo to the blog I have started and stopped this entry 3 times already. Of course I am still getting billed per minute so maybe it's all part of the plan? Or perhaps the Travelblog server had too much Christmas pudding? I made it to Addis on Tuesday night having blagged a lift with the workers for a Finnish Water project in Assosa. We started the 670km drive at 6am and reached Addis by 6.30pm. Luckily Tapio (the Finnish project manager) can drive so the driving was shared and consequently we made good time. After a blitz of goodie shopping on Christmas Eve, as well as visiting the Federal Police for ... read more

THANK-YOU to everyone who has sponsored me for the Great Ethiopian Run! Your help is much appreciated by both us and VSO! The last 6 weeks or so have been a total blur - in Assosa I've hosted our friend Marta (the ex-VSO from Assosa) and our French friends Christine, Bernard and Liana. Then in Addis Sara and I have hosted her sister, Jan and husband Al. Lots of nice pictures that are completley blog-worthy, but with time against me now I'll be working hard in moments of free time to update you all too. In the meantime I took a slight detour from Assosa....to Kenya! When we first got clearance from VSO London to remain in Ethiopia, we were told Sara must stay in Addis - because of the malaria risk in Assosa - but ... read more

We did it! With Mr Bean growing inside Sara we thought it would not be kind to put them both through the run, however they both supported from the sidelines - Sara screaming at surprised runners (and Mr Bean adding the odd kick or two of encouragement). With the support of Sara, Jan and Al I got through the Great Ethiopian Run and we now hope - through YOU (dear reader) and other supporter's help, to reach the target of £5,000 for VSO that we set in late 2007 when we knew we would be volunteering for two years. Training Runs For the previous three weeks I had been busy reminding my body that I used to run 10K and half-marathon races once upon a time in the UK. Now past 40 my body seems to ... read more

So here is the news - though I guess most of you know this by now - Sara is pregnant and going to have a baby!!!! We are both delighted as we were led to believe it was not medically possible. For many years we had hauled ourselves through the NHS infertility system (not much fun - lovely nurses, less lovely consultants) without success. After years of poking, prodding, samples, scans, diary-keeping, mucus feeling, pipe-cleaning, keyhole camera examinations and even reflexology and acupuncture (not on the NHS of course), we were signed off with "unexplained infertility". Next please... We were both very sad, though I was kind of pleased I'd never have to give another sperm sample. Apart from trying to collect the sample in a bottle clearly designed by a woman (and a woman with ... read more

So onto ICT (or In-Country Training). Where three current volunteers and two PO staff offer to welcome/herd/brief/assist/lecture and generally introduce 36 new Ferengi volunteers to the people's, customs, traditions, language and culture of Ethiopia. Surely an easy task? Er, not really :) So why exactly did I agree to do it? Well firstly I am a volunteer. I guess volunteering is my thing.. ..and also three guys did it for us - and did a great job - so it's kind of paying it back. Or is it paying it forward? All our ICT helpers have finished as volunteers now... Besides I'm an opinionated guy who likes the sound of my own voice, so why not spread the thoughts of Chairman Al to a room full of spotless minds? ;) OK, its more than that. VSO ... read more

"Ta-fa?" (or "Ta-fash?" if you are good friends or female) Rough Translation: where have you been? I've been in Addis, helping train the 36 new volunteers (well, 33 volunteers and 3 accompanying partners), though that's another story :) For now I'll stick to non-ICT (In-Country Training) news only. Holy Light, Batman! Before I flew to Addis, we had been enjoying the extra power in Assosa. Instead of being off all day and night on no-power days, it was coming back at 8.30pm which is great for charging batteries, boiling water and an hour or so of not blundering around the house by torchlight. Plus everyone had been promised power on Sundays, regardless of the schedule! Maybe the churches were having a good whinge about the cost of diesel for their generators and rattled a few cages? ... read more

Well I'm kind of responding to the "blog seems to be stuck in Europe" comment from one of my good blog reading customers... ... and as I'm providing a service here, I guess I ought to be sensitive to my consumers wishes and do a blog from where we are supposed to be blogging from - Ethiopia! Apologis to Christine, to whom I promised that the next blog would be about our day in La Rochelle. That will have to wait I'm afraid...but I think it might be worth it :) "This thing CAN'T be done" (I hope) So it's gone midnight, I've had a St George, four Bedele's, finished the bottle of Baileys Sara was given by Antero and started drinking glasses of the (warm) box of half-sweet South African wine that Judith left us. ... read more
