Just what exactly are YOU doing for Ethiopians?? Well I guess I ought to interrupt the random (blog) thoughts of Chairman Al with an update on work. I will do a 'typical day' blog later this week (if I get some pictures/video) as it is quite a contrast to a typical day back in the UK; not because I do less work, just the timings and general environmental differences. Ok, I've not had to shoo any sheep out of the office yet, but we have definately had a couple of oxen wandering around the compund for two days, waiting for slaughter and distribution amongst contributing staff! So my job title here is IT Training Expert though during recruitment and the first month in country VSO's wires were crossed and I was listed everywhere as a Management ... read more

I had remained in Addis after the IT Volunteers workshop to carry out some work on the Programme Office network, so my flight back to Assosa was not until the Tuesday after Meskel. The flight itself was unusually uneventful. I did have the pleasure of 2 seats to myself, the only spare seat on the plane. Guess I ought to change my brand of deodorant? Maybe the other passengers (quite rightly) realised that the personal space allowed in a Fokker 50 is far greater when sat next to a slim Ethiopian than when seated next to some Ferengi who had just spent 10 days in Addis fattening up! The rule didn't apply to female Ferengis - there were a bunch of blonde German or Scandanavian (tourists maybe?) en route to Jimma who bagged all the attention. ... read more

Since we have been back it's been feast of Johnny Morris tales. The rats have been running egg and spoon races in the attic space under the tin roof. Sara has had a sheep walk into her office, take a seat and start dictating a memo...well, almost. No doubt she will tell more but it was raining and her office gained an extra staff member for the afternoon. Not a common occurance at Jisc back home she says - but then maybe only because she's on the top floor and the sheep just can't reach the buttons in the lift...? The cats are back round the house. Only the loud (I think deaf) one is still alive from the happy threesome that we took under our wings earlier in the year. We have fed him milk ... read more

Here we go. After a lull in activity I'm back in full blogging fettle. In fact I'm thinking of having a 'blog week' to catch up on the entries - there is the whole field trip from April that needs doing! Not to mention my (work) day in the life of, Ethiopian names, booze, bugs, absent friends and the musings of a layman on the business of 'development'. This weekend I have hardly left the house. Work-wise I have been (as Neil would say) 'busier than a one-legged man in an a*se kicking competition' what with preparing and delivering training (that's another story) and so this weekend I wiped the calendar free, cancelled the theatre tickets, postponed the champagne breakfast and sat in front of cable TV with a 6 pack and my favourite Indian take ... read more

Five Go Mad on Meskel OK it's more like 3 plus the pick-pocket and the Federal Policeman with the *big* stick. September 27th is Meskel - the orthodox Christian festival in Ethiopia - or the finding of the true cross. Legend has it that some ancient queen (Helena) had a dream in which she burnt a pile of wood and the smoke led to the place at which the true cross of the crucifixion was buried. Celebrated on the evening before (i.e. the afternoon of Friday 26th) the centre of Addis grinds to a halt as the 16-lane chaos of Meskel Square is replaced by 100,000-citizen chaos while various churches make their representations at the square, priests gather with colourful umbrellas and a large pile of wood is burnt; all followed by a firework display. I am the Jonah Ok. Let's get the unhappy bit out of the way first. On February 2nd when I left the UK Arsenal were sitting pretty 5 points clear at the top of the Premiership. They were still in the FA Cup and Champions League. Granted Spurs had managed, after 9 years of trying, to finally beat the kids in the League Cup semi but I guess like monkeys and Shakespeare, if you keep trying long enough, something like that is bound to happen. The bottom line was Arsenal were set fair for a successful season. And since I left the UK in Feburary 2008? Arsenal throw away the Premiership, after being 1-0 up against both Man U and Chelsea and mess it up in the Champs League in the last 5 minutes against Liverpool ... read more

Last night was our New Year party and we got to bed at around 3am. It's OK . Ignore it and dig them (allegedly industrial strength) earplugs in deeper my son and they'll get bored. Er, nope. Did it work? Did they get bored? Of course not! They're small kids. They *never* get bored of annoying adults. Besides, them Ferengis handed out $50,000 in used birr (is there any other kind??), gold watches... read more

Woke up with a very sore head and children shouting outside! So our New Year’s Eve celebrations went well, more people than I expected turned up - most people we asked came and everyone turned up exactly on time. Not knowing the Ethiopian form on parties and food, we floundered for a little while as everyone sat around the edges of the room quietly, Al did a great job being in charge of drinks and making sure everyone had one (no surprise there then!) and then we told everyone to dig into the lovely food Marta had prepared (and a little bit by me too), which went down very well, we ran out of plates, injera and almost food, luckily Al and I waited till the end, the young lads used lids for plates and ... read more

Yes I’m still struggling to keep the blog updated. However I’ve been inspired, well, by two things actually, firstly an amazing adventure we had at the weekend and secondly we have a couple of Ethiopian readers in America, who know Assosa and have told us we’re not saying or showing enough of the good stuff here. So this one is for you Antenna and Asishu. We went on an incredible walk on Sunday, we headed off to Andreas’s house at about 9.00, it was raining a bit, but not too heavy. Andreas has been in Ethiopia for about 14 years and for much of that time lived in Assosa and in one of the Berta villages close by, with his wife and three children, he works on a language programme. So he was our guide and ... read more

Today is Ethiopian New Years Eve, it’s a beautiful clear warm sunny day. Like Easter you can hear the bleating of the sheep everywhere and the crow of the cockerels, the birds are singing, it really is a lovely day. We have decided to celebrate New Years Eve as we would in the UK, so we’re holding a party for all our friends here in Assosa tonight. Many people travel home to be with their families and people will gather during the day tomorrow to eat and drink and celebrate, we have been invited to our Seurateunya (Worker) Marta’s house to spend sometime with her family so we’ll be looking forward to that - we will just have to make sure the hangover isn’t too bad from tonight. For our celebrations and our friends we decided ... read more
