Lauren (the English teacher from the midwife college, who hails from Duluth, MN) and I had decided to take a day trip to the city of Weliso on Sat. There are hot springs there and so the plan was to meet at the Ethiopia hotel by 8:45 on Sat morning and then try to hire a driver for the day to take us there. It sounds easy but for me to figure out how to get a taxi is a whole other story. I walked up from the hotel to where we had gotten a mini bus to go to the mercato the other day. However before I got there I ran into Tekabe, the hotel manager, who stopped me to see what I was doing. He thought "I was very clever" for trying to figure ... read more

Last night I'm convinced that there were turf wars going on with the packs of neighborhood dogs. At least that's how it seemed through out most of the night last night. I eventually got up and put in some earplugs but they didn't help that much. From now on I'm not going to complain when Tobey starts barking at a squirrel outside because his bark is nothing compared those dogs outside! So needless to say I woke up a little bleary eyed this morning. It rained overnight so the smog wasn't quite so bad this morning. I walked over to the Fistula Hospital and met up with Annette and her children along with John Little from last night for a ride out to Desder Menda (Joy Village). ... read more

Day one of my journey. Woke up to the threat of snow so with the thought that the snow might delay my flight as well as my luggage being overweight i was fraught (sp?) with worry. It started snowing around 9 am but didn't amount to much so i needn't have worried. Mike picked me up at my house and after wrestling with two large suitcases weighing who knows how much, as well as my carry on luggage, back pack and a stroller jammed into my car we were off to the airport! I was overjoyed when my first suitcase came in at exactly 50 lbs and the second one at 54.5 lbs (actually not that the outside agent was even worrying!) so then it was onto security and walking around with an empty stroller (don't ... read more

Well, let's try this again. I had day two of my trip all written out and then curses, when i went to publish it is when the computer froze and lost all of my information. Technology.... After a great night's sleep I was up and walking to the Fistula Hospital by 8:30 am. The hospital is only one and a half blocks away from the Union hotel so it couldn't be any better. Looking outside my window this morning confirmed that i am in a third world country with the view of the scenery as well as all of the construction and other noises that were going on. Bethel, the PR person for the Fistula Hospital sat with me for about an hour explaing to me about the hospital. They have room for approx 100 patients ... read more

Hello all! Well, I made it to Addis Ababa after 24 hours of flights. I have no luggage! It didn’t show up when I got here and then when I went to report it, they seemed very used to the problem and immediately gave me almost a hundred bucks in compensation. How odd. The problem is that there was no other Lufthansa flight coming in from Frankfurt until tonight (Monday) and I arrived on a Saturday night. Big bummer. I’m heading out there tonight in hopes of getting my suitcases and if I don’t I’ll really be screwed because we’ll be heading up into the north in a few days and this is not like Kenya where our local agent is amazing and takes care of all these things…flying your bags out to you. So the ... read more

Well spending a week in Addis Ababa was not in our original plans, but Ethiopian Airways seemed to have other ideas for us so a week it was. "Addis" as it is known means "new flower" and its location was chosen because of the natural beauty of the area which is now being eclipsed as massive development sprawls incoherently reaching out further and further from the city. With a population between 5-6 million, it is home to many non-governmental organizations where the white land cruisers with UN signage compete with the blue and white mini buses and old blue lada taxis belching out exhaust. It is also one of the fastest growing cities in Africa. As one couple we met noted 7 years ago there were virtually no high rises and now on every street corner, ... read more

Well, this was certainly going to be a Xmas to remember and not in a good way. We left Lalibela extremely late on our Ethiopian Airlines flight and then had to endure most of the full tourist circuit as we took off and landed in Gonder and then Bahir Dar before getting to Addis. Since we were an hour late when we landed in Gonder, they advised us that the ground time would be 3 minutes and it pretty much was. However, all their attempts to make up for lost time could not compensate fully and when we landed in Addis we had only 25 minutes to make our next flight to Dire Dawa, 500 km or so east of Addis. We flew through the airport as if in training for the Amazing Race, bags in ... read more

The atmosphere at the Great Ethiopian Run was amazing! A sea of yellow stretched out ahead as I walked with assorted VSO volunteers and friends, and several thousand people, through the streets of Addis Ababa. The 10 kilometre route started, and ended, at Meskel Square and wound its way through Stadium, Mexico, Churchill Avenue. People chanted slogans at Government buildings and danced in the shower half way round. It is the first time I have participated in anything like this, and the Millennium Run - one of the largest (if not the largest) mass participation events in Africa - was a good one to start (and probably end) with. I did run across the finish line - just to say that I had! ... read more

Essentially this was Car Care Day. We took all three cars to the country’s main Toyota dealer where we were met with such friendliness. A huge set-up, possibly because every other car in Ethiopia is a Toyota! The workshop had about 30 or more lifts or pits on which cars could be worked and, once all the paperwork was completed, they gave priority to us travelers and had our cars on ramps with a dedicated team to each. Oil change was the main objective but we found that some torsion bar bushes needed replacing, together with some suspension bushes and brake pads. There were other minor problems needing solving and we all had our drive trains checked, oiled and greased. Good stuff, but boring for the ladies who explored some of Adis’s shops and bought provisions ... read more
