On my way
What are you doing with an empty stroller? And where's the baby?? Day one of my journey. Woke up to the threat of snow so with the thought that the snow might delay my flight as well as my luggage being overweight i was fraught (sp?) with worry. It started snowing around 9 am but didn't amount to much so i needn't have worried. Mike picked me up at my house and after wrestling with two large suitcases weighing who knows how much, as well as my carry on luggage, back pack and a stroller jammed into my car we were off to the airport! I was overjoyed when my first suitcase came in at exactly 50 lbs and the second one at 54.5 lbs (actually not that the outside agent was even worrying!) so then it was onto security and walking around with an empty stroller (don't think that didn't get me a bunch of stares) I got onto the plane and we took off on time. i must say that taking ambien is over rated. i slept a total of 2 hours taking 1/2 of a tablet! Anyway, I had plenty to do on the plane with all of the reading material that i had brought. I landed in Amsterdam at
6;30 am to a rainy and cold morning. I found the upstairs lounge and took a quick hour nap on one of the reclining chairs there. Not very restful but it helped pass the time. back through security (with the empty stroller of course and the gate agent asking me where was the child??!) I sat next to a woman who was returning to Addis after visiting her children in the US for a month. She was a very intereseting seat mate and we had good conversation inbetween being fed a few times and both of us watching some tv. I actually saw an episode of House (can you believe it Mike?? House is everywhere!). we landed in Khartoum Sudan for an hour and then took off from there to Addis.
After breezing through passport control at Addis it was time to bite my fingernails and worry about my luggage arriving. My first suitcase came through shortly after the first round and then I waited and waited until they finally said that there wasn't any more luggage. Now what to do?? I was worried that the hotel driver would have left by now but I also needed to complete the paperwork for my lost luggage. By the time I located the driver and came back in they miracluously found my second bag. After sending it through the xray machine the guy asking me about all of the wrenches that I had in my bag....yes, really I brought them all this way just to sell them on the open market...no, just kidding.
So my first look at Addis was in the dark (I saws the Happy 2000 Millineum sign...in Ethiopia according to their calendar its only the year 2000) but I was so happy that i had someone there to help manuever all the luggage and get me safely to the hotel. The hotel accommodations are very nice. I think its rather new and all the floors are marble! I was more than happy to dump my luggage, take a quick shower and climb into bed at midnight there time. The sheets never felt so good!
