I can't believe how incredible the Abu Simbel Temple is. Before I get to that I want to include a few details. I am traveling with GAdventures for the "Best of Egypt, Jordan, and Israel". I have taken many GAdventures trips before and I've been pleased with all of them. Our group consist of mostly Australians, 1 Brit, 1 Columbian, 2 Canadians, and 3 Americans (14 in all). Our guide is Khaled - has great stories, very knowledable, very funny, and very talented (he is a musician and has an Egyptian cooking show). The group is compatible and fun. Also, I haven't labeled the pictures for 3 days because I'm using someone's hotspot and I have limited time. Tomorrow we get on a Felucca and do an overnight to Luxor - so I won't have wifi ... read more

I am using someone’s hotspot so this entry will not have photos until I have better wifi. Last night we got on the train for the overnight to Aswan. The compartments are small, bunkbed style. Caroline from Australia is my roommate. They served us a good chicken dinner, then to bed. The coach jerks around from time to time, but the motion of the train is good for sleeping. We got to Aswan and brought our luggage to the hotel. The rooms weren’t ready yet so we dropped them off and went to the Philae Temple Complex. I did not have wifi on the train, and the wifi at our hotel in Aswan is terrible, so the photos will not be labeled because I'm using someone's hot spot. Today our leader Khaled (aka “Elvis”) brought us to the Egyptian Museum and gave us a whirlwind tour of the highlights of the museum. This museum houses a spectacular collection of Pharoanic antiquities. There are more than 120,000 pieces on display from statues to sarcophagus, to jewelry, to boats, to ancient papyrus, with the most spectacular the items from King Tut’s tomb. King Tut only served as King 7 or 8 years and died when he was 19 or 20. He was not the most significant king in Ancient Egypt, but his tomb was intact and not raided so all of the items were there ... read more

Ahhh - the ocean (ahem - my tour guide said "Not ocean, the sea") Okay, the Mediterranean Sea. I love the ocean/sea because I live near the ocean/sea. From Wikipedia: Alexandria is the second-largest city in Egypt and a major economic center. With a population of 5,200,000, Alexandria is the largest city on the Mediterranean, the sixth-largest city in the Arab world and the ninth-largest in Africa. The city extends about 40 km (25 mi) at the url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_coast_of_Egyp... read more

After 22 hours flying from San Diego to San Francisco to Frankfurt to Cairo – I arrived on Wednesday, Feb. 25th. The flight to Frankfurt was not crowded so everyone found seats to stretch out on and sleep. Thankfully I arranged an airport pickup. Ali helped me with the customs steps and then we got into the van for a 1 hour ride to the hotel. Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak died and there were street closures so it took longer to get to the hotel – plus the traffic is a nightmare. I arrived 2 days before the tour starts so I figured out what I wanted to see. Ali told me I could get in touch with the trip guide but for some reason I couldn’t get through to his phone. Transportation choices here ... read more

So our boat trip on the Royal Ruby along the Nile from Luxor to Aswan was 4 nights....though the boat was actually docked late at night in Aswan so we had 2 nights there. After leaving Luxor and heading through the Esna Lock we docked at a small place called Edfu and sailed through to Aswan the next day. En route we had gorgeous views and sunsets on the lush Nile with a very rich green delta each side of the river with lots of crops, veges etc. Whilst sailing sellers would come along in their tinnies and throw their ropes and hook onto our ship....they were hilarious...yelling out from the water to 4 floors up selling their wares....they would throw the item all the way up in a plastic bag and you returned money back ... read more

Just as bad as a Europe flight to get here....22hrs in total...change at Dubai and then 4hr flight to Cairo. Our driver was there to meet us and it was quite easy to get out of the airport. Driving from the airport Cairo looked just like I imagined....concrete jungle of apartment blocks....that look like they should be condemned and look like they are falling down, crazy traffic most of the way, dusty with a dust haze over the city but quite mesmerising with all the sites and sounds, people going about their daily life. We came a day early to Cairo before we join our tour group for the main tour of Cairo, train sleeper overnight to Luxor and then a 4 day Nile Cruise down to Aswan, a day trip to Abu Simbel and then ... read more

,Here we are racing across a desert in Egypt in a jeep towards the Red Sea Mountains. It is a bit of a bumpy and hair raising ride but Magid our driver has assured us that he has spent the last 15 years being a desert driver. He drives very fast and we hang on for dear life but I do note that he does, even at this high speed ,avoid the rocks on the way. We are in a convoy of four jeeps supported by a police vehicle. We are already way ahead of the others but our guy goes for it and soon we arrive at a Bedouin encampment at the base of the mountains. Our guide Abdhulla who was in our jeep takes us down to a well where a lady has just ... read more

We visited El-Alamein on our 2019 Africa Motorbike Trip. During our time spend in El-Alamein we visited The German Military Cemetery. Built in memory of the German Soldiers that died here in World War 2. The guide were very friendly even offered us a camping spot for the night. Unfortunately we had to travel on.... read more

Our last day in Egypt started with another early morning call, for another early morning flight. It was our last day in Egypt, and we were duly subdued at the thought. That day we were lucky in one respect. It was a holiday, so the traffic when we got to Cairo was much lighter than it would have been on a normal day. The lack of traffic either aided observing the different parts of town we drove through, or maybe impaired it since we moved quicker than we would have done otherwise. One thing we did not see as much in Cairo as when we were visiting Memphis and Saqqara was unfinished houses and buildings. In Egypt, they have the same situation I saw in Nepal. The housing taxes are sky high, so people do not ... read more
