Background: The regularity and richness of the annual Nile River flood, coupled with semi-isolation provided by deserts to the east and west, allowed for the development of one of the world's great civilizations. A unified kingdom arose circa 3200 B.C. and a series of dynasties ruled in Egypt for the next three millennia. The last native dynasty fell to the Persians in 341 B.C., who in turn were replaced by the Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines. It was the Arabs who introduced Islam and the Arabic language in the 7th century and who ruled for the next six centuries. A local military caste, the Mamluks took control about 1250 and continued to govern after the conquest of Egypt by the Ottoman Turks in 1517. Following the completion of the Suez Canal in 1869, Egypt became an important world transportation hub, but also fell heavily into debt. Ostensibly to protect its investments, Britain seized control of Egypt's government in 1882, but nominal allegiance to the Ottoman Empire continued until 1914. Partially independent from the UK in 1922, Egypt acquired full sovereignty following World War II. The completion of the Aswan High Dam in 1971 and the resultant Lake Nasser have altered the time-honored place of the Nile River in the agriculture and ecology of Egypt. A rapidly growing population (the largest in the Arab world), limited arable land, and dependence on the Nile all continue to overtax resources and stress society. The government has struggled to ready the economy for the new millennium through economic reform and massive investment in communications and physical infrastructure.

Amman... Amman, Amman, Amman! It might be strange to start out my entry with that, but I seriously couldn't be happier to be back in Jordan. I suppose further reading will explain why, and this entry is not supposed to be about Amman, so I'll start. First glances. I woke up last Friday morning extremely excited and tried to keep calm while we waited for some of our program-mates to meet us at our apartment. My roommate Soraya and I were taking an earlier flight with Zuliekha, Patrick, Rustin and Julia. My other roommates Alicia and Alison were taking a later [View Full Entry]

Hi Everyone! In the last few days I have realized the pinnacle of my round the world trip. Seeing the Egyptian pyramids is the number one thing I have always wanted to do. I booked a tour for this trip as I thought Egypt would be the most difficult place to travel alone. I did spend one day by myself in Cairo before the tour started and I did find a woman alone to be besieged by vendors and touts. I had one man offer me 1000 camels if I would move to the desert and be one of his wives. [View Full Entry]

A visit to Babylon Africa » Egypt » Lower Egypt » Cairo
As in, the real thing: the Coptic City in Cairo is built on the ruins of the ancient Babylon Fortress. However, before getting there I went to Mass at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Gezira, Cairo, merely to prove that, no matter how good my intentions, I can be late to Mass no matter what continent. As I mentioned yesterday, this particular Mass was in Arabic. Thank God that 'Alleluia' and 'Amen' are universal (see, I made it before the Gospel). There also seemed to be a lack of attention to germs, or rather the G.I.R.M., because not only did we [View Full Entry]

To ensure Erin took it easy, we got sent to Alexandria for 5 days, timed so that we would make it back before the "Little Feast" at the end of Ramadan. With its beaches and plentiful sea breezes, Alexandria is a popular summer holiday destination for Cairenes but we were told that since summer has come to an end, it shouldn't be too busy. Now compared to Cairo, it wasn't busy at all, but it was far busier than we have ever seen it, in the past having visited during early spring. Like Cairo, it seems at times like there are [View Full Entry]

It is dark now, and so the last day of Ramadan has passed (yeah!). The long fast is over, and the celebrations have begun. My celebration began much earlier- too early, in fact- as the trick to riding to the pyramids is beating the heat. I arrived at the stables located just behind the (surprisingly small and generally disappointing) Sphinx a little before 8am (2am back in Saint Paul). After selecting the second mount I was offered (I was certain the first would have killed me, given that I saw him throw the groom who was trying to 'sell' him to [View Full Entry]

1). The smell (diesel, raw sewage, and the Nile) hits you when you step off the airplane, and 2). Every other street, bridge, school, or building is named 'October the 6th' (commemorating the 1973 surprise attack by Egypt and Syria against Israel). Sadat was killed on the same day sometime in the 1980s, but no bridges have been built in honor of that, at least not that I am aware of. Returning to Egypt, it is predictable in some ways, but it also still has the potential to surprise. For instance, I wasn't expecting the use of thermal imaging to identify [View Full Entry]

Sorry for the lapse... but here's what is new... Cairo. What sticks out the most for me is the marketplace here. It is a labyrinth that weaves its way down alleyways between buildings, where you can buy anything you could possibly want. Clothing, jewelry, hookahs, appliances, dishware, blankets. It is the epitome of organized chaos--the market is so packed with customers--veiled women, unveiled women, shopkeepers... all of whom would be shoved up against the display tables when boys with loads or carts of trash/merchandise/cardboard/food would push their way past, hissing to get people [View Full Entry]

Of Oz, There is no place like home. Hey guys, Well we've arrived in Egypt and our first impression of Egypt is it's really hot! I think I turned into a puddle approx. 2 minutes after walking out of the Cairo airport. We managed to make it to our hostel and ended up relaxing most of the day partly due to the heat as well as being tired from sleeping in the Nairobi airport the night before. I definitely don't recommend doing this as it was one of the worst airports we've ever been in. Our original plan for Egypt was we were going to do everything ourselves, but [View Full Entry]
