Well, after getting back from our last little road trip around Namibia, Ryan and I decided it was time to focus on getting further north, and to our ultimate goal of reaching Mozambique. Charlie is heading to Dar Es Salem and figured he would join us. What was going to be a simple train ride turned into another road trip, this time with five people. Rob (New Zealand) had to get up to Katima to do some fishing in Angola and Sophie (England) wanted to see the country so we figured the five of us could subsidize each other quite nicely and explore the area to a greater degree and maybe find some animals. We hit the road and drove 900km straight into the evening and ended up at a camp called Ngepi just west of ... read more

While driving through Botswana I saw a different Afrrica then Cape Town. Much of the area we covered was not polulated and the areas we were had nothing surrounding them. Many subsistance farmers who just live in their tiny community. Our travel guide said that the government or companies will come by time to time to offer jobs to them, such as road construction that was being done on the highway we were traveling on. everyone waved to our massive overland buses, and many children chased us along their fence. Since i've been here South Africans have asked why I came to Cape Town because "it's not Africa." It's so weird because they think that I as an American think of what I saw in Botswana as Africa, with Elephants crossing the road instead of other ... read more

May 3, 2006 - Day 18 - This morning we crossed back into Botswana and directly into Chobe National Park. We had about 80min of driving in the park and saw nothing. Got to camp just outside of the town of Kasane. Had some time to go into town while others got some US dollars for the next portion of the trip. Turned out to be super boring and a painfully slow experience. Got back to camp in time for those who were taking an optional game drive. I opted for the evening cruise instead, which turned out to be a mistake. On the game drive they saw lions close up and bunches and bunches of elephants. Elephants on land, elephants in the water, elephants everywhere you looked. On the boat cruise we saw about 5 ... read more

Return to Nata. “Is this your underwear?” Anouk held up my red lacy French cut underwear up so I could see it from the front cabin. “Yep,” I had hung it up to dry and I guess the sway of the truck meant it was not staying up. “Put it on the dashboard,” Derick suggested. Sure, it would look real good next to the battered dog eared FHM. Makes him look like a real trucker. Leaving Maun behind, we drove ahead towards Nata camp. Botswana has this annoying love affair with barrier gates. Every ten miles a rusting barrier swings on the edge of a metal barrel and manned by uninterested Batwanas. There were no shortages of donkeys to evade and even a horse hopping across the road. Why did the horse hop across the road? ... read more

One thing I can say about this vacation, there was never a dull moment! Between the beauty of the sunsets, the glaze of the milky way, the sounds and sights of the animals, I had grown quite fond of Africa. I must warn you, that when you go to Africa, there is a part of Africa that never leaves your spirit, or so they say. I have come to believe that. As you all know, I have a great passion for the outdoors, animals, and travel, and to photograph nature, for me it is a labor of love. One of the surprises we encountered while at Linyanti Camp is Wild Dog! There is less than 4500 Wild Dog, and we saw a pack of 28 dogs! Other animals we saw were: Birds, Hippo, Elephant, Water Monitor, ... read more

I am thrilled to share my pictures with each of you and it makes my day a little bit special when I know everyone enjoys them. I am so grateful for the eyes that have been given to me to see the people, the animals, and the vast regions of Africa. I am so grateful for the ears in which I can hear the different sounds of birds and animals, as well as the laughter of children. I am so grateful to have the tongue in which I can speak of my experiences with great passion! To the northeast of the Okavango Delta are the Chobe and Linyanti Game Reserves. These areas are renowned for their predators and large concentrations of game, particularly elephant. Dereck and Beverly Joubert made the region famous in their National Geographic ... read more

Out of Namibia & Hello Botswana The truck sounded really sick this morning. It took a few good minutes before it even felt like making a sound. Just a few empty clicks. “Come on, my beauty queen! Last time before Maun Camp,” Derick pleaded. Finally, she coughed back into life and we were on our way to Botswana. “That’s my beauty queen!” he crooned while I looked on with slight concern about this unhealthy attachment for a vehicle. A guard stood at the barrier as we were heading into the Kavango province. The nausea washed over me and I fought hard to keep it down. I hugged my pillow and curled around it hoping I wouldn’t have to ask Derick to make an emergency stop down the track. It was the Doxy. Curling didn’t help ... read more

We took a "puddle jumper" to Savuti Camp, it was a little over an hour & half flight! I'd say the plane was smaller than the Concorde, and slower than a Snail in a quick crawl. It was fun though, especially when we hit some turbulence. Our arrival at Savuti Camp was a little on the wet side as an afternoon shower developed. Yours truly, my lower lip began to extend out because in the back of my mind, were we going to have one of those Texas showers that can go on forever, or would we have a "quickie". My mind eased up about an hour later! Off we went for a late afternoon drive to see what "dangers" would lie ahead. As we were driving down a hill, we encountered a couple of frisky, ... read more
