Spent the last 3 days (7th to 9th) in the delta.. had so much anticipation to go into the delta.. especially after watching a documentary on lions eating elephants in the okavango delta on somebody's ipod.. well.. i think if you want a more exciting safari.. don't do it by mokoro (dug-out canoes).. probably fly into the inner delta and do some game drives from there.. The mokoro CRUISE started on 7th.. we took a transfer truck from Camp Sitatunga.. after an hour's drive, we arrive at the delta where numerous mokoros await our arrival to take us into the delta.. the mokoros are basically poled along the shallow depth of the delta.. max 2 passengers.. so you and another person sit in the narrow mokoro.. and your poler stands behind to pole the canoe.. the ... read more

Crossed the border from Zimbabwe to Botswana 2 days ago.. and did a short game driver in the Chobe National Park yesterday morning.. read and slept on me hammock the whole of yesterday afternoon... and travelled from Kasane to Maun for the most part of the day today.. Will be going for a 3 day safari into the Okavango Delta tomorrow.. there will be a couple of safari walks.. and we will be venturing into the deltas on mekoro (dug-out canoes).. bush camping, and have to bring our own food and tents.. looking forward to the safari.. and hopefully the delta is as good as they say.. Maun is a pretty developed place.. rapidly growing due to tourism around the delta region.. we are entering the dry season now.. so hopefully the animals are thirsty enough ... read more

northeast Botswana I'm sure I've been this dusty before, but I don't really remember when. Last year's rainy season never arrived, and northeastern Botswana is in the grips of a 30 year drought. The wetland area is shrunk, and low water levels severely limit traditional poling areas, so we never got to this particular form of travel. The thin veneer of grass and soil holding the underlying sand is nearly gone in places. Still, the countryside is beautiful, and our seven day backcountry trip is one of the highlights of our travels. Animals are only somewhat restricted from their historic ranges, as the natural areas are extensive and even cross international boundaries. We started out in Maun and traveled through Moreme Park to Chobe Park and Kasane, and finished with a boat trip along the Chobe ... read more

So here I am at the end of my time in the beautiful Botswana! BUT before i talk about THAT I'll finish off recounting my time in South Africa! When I last wrote i'd just arrived in Pretoria. SO on our first full day in Pretoria we went to the apartheid museum in Johannesburg (about 45mins from pretoria) which was a real eye-opener. I found it really interesting and I'm glad i went - there was sooo much to take in though! Need to spend a whole day there to really get to grips with everything. We didn't have that kind of time though as we went from here to visit Soweto (an acronym for 'south western townships') which was really cool. Much more built up than i thought it was going to be - there ... read more

Its actually the 12th May, but im still behind having only just found decent internet! Well ... in Botswana we also went to Maun. The Chobe NP is very pretty. We saw lots more animals including some much bigger crocs, hippos and their babies and more of the now very familiar elephants, zebra's and giraffes. We were almost charged by an elephant at the side of the road because someone shouted from the truck forgetting the windows were open! Apparently it was only a mock charge though. Then in Maun we went in to the Ocovanga Delta, a bush camp where we saw hippos really close and elephants, then the following day we did a flight over the delta which was amazing, we saw croc's and hippos and elephants really close despite being in the plane. ... read more

Sat31st Truck journey to the Okavango Delta- I slept all the way. When we arrived a few of us went up in a plane to see it and a few animals from above. It wasn’t as good as the micro light and I threw up on the way down!! Sun 1st Up early and onto an open truck and into the delta, then onto a makuro a hollowed out trunk canoe that 2 of us went into with one guy to “punt” us along. We arrived in a clearing and set up camp. We played a few games and then had a go punting the makuro’s and went for a swim in the delta. At 5 we went on an evening walk which I really enjoyed, the sun was setting and we spotted a couple ... read more

Fri 30th Up at 5.30 for a quick snack then on a truck fro 25 to Chobe National park. We saw lions just after they had killed a buffalo and spotted a leopard which means I’ve now seen all the big five- Leopard, Lion, Buffalo, Elephant and Hippo. It was a shame the truck was so big as if you were sat on the wrong side from the animals you cant see very clearly. In the afternoon we went on the boat trip that I had paid extra to do on the way up. We saw loads more this time- Hippos again and then elephants, a breed of baboons only found in Botswana, eagles and Kudo. ... read more

Mon 26th Up at 5.30 for bush walk. It was a very brisk pace and we saw some cool footprints of elephants and wild dogs and some sort of cat, but that was it no animals. Then we had a 3 hour drive to Thebe which I slept through. After lunch (we make sandwiches at the truck) we went on a boat cruse down Chobe river. It was really good, not just the animals but some cool sky, a rainbow and a bit of thunder and lightening but not on us. Most impressively we saw lots of Hippos but we also spotted small crocodiles, kudo and impala, some cool birds including pied kingfishers and swarms of dragonflies that reminded me of the flying keys in Harry Potter. Back at the campsite it had rained hard ... read more

BOTSWANA!

While in Capetown, South Africa, our tour group had a bus driver named Joos for several days. Our tour manager, Catherine, called him "a bit of a country boy." Anyway, Joos asked Catherine what our group was doing after we left the Capetown area. She explained we were going on to Victoria Falls and then doing photo safaris in Botswana. Yoos eyed our group of 14 and skeptically noted, "This group is going on safari?" Catherine explained that in actuality, we were staying in some pretty luxurious camps and taking games drives in open vehicles. Yoos' response was," That's not a safari! Safari is when you take your rifle, your tent and your donkey and you go into the bush to hunt animals!" Well, Yoos, we didn’t do what you would call a “safari,” but we ... read more
