Welcome to Cuenca, Ecuador! We made the move. We purchased a great little condo on the road up to Las Cajas National Recreation Area. We enjoy a terrific view through the windows and patio into the Andean Foothills. Cuenca is a picturesque colonial city located in the Southern Ecuadorian Andean Highlands at an altitude of 8335 ft. It sits along the sparkling Tomebamba river which rushes out of the surrounding mountains. Stunning walks along the river and down the cobble stoned streets abound here. Cathedrals are numerous and colonial architecture is around every corner. The weather here is in the 70's most days with the nights in the 50's. It rains frequently, but seldom very hard or for very long. It would be hard to order up weather that was any more pleasant. Cristie and I ... read more

Everyone here says, "Buenos Dias, Buenos Tardes, and Buenos Noches" as they pass, depending on the time of day. Jose told me to say it when you are right next to the person and only say it once. I tend to say it twice because I forget who I have already said it to. After a sneeze, you can say, "Salud", which means "health", and it's like "bless you" in English. In the U.S. I say bless you to any sneezing person. While Jose and I were in the store, a man sneezed and I said, "salud" to him. Jose told me I can't go around saying "salud" to anyone if you don't know him. So, I started to cry and Jose said, "fine, you can say "salud" to anyone you want to." lol. We ... read more

This being my first Australia Day outside of my country, I became particularly patriotic and began to wear little koalas and kangaroos on my clothing, and telling people about the wonders of dancing the 'Heel and Toe'. This all culminated in my first Triple J Hottest 100 party, hosted in the hostel where I am currently living called 'Mama Latina', in Cuenca. We managed to hook up the broadcast (until the internet died, thanks anyway Paul) and the four Aussie girls who teach here at CEDEI: Lea, Gretel, Rachel and myself, revelled in hearing Aussie accents live on radio and a bunch of music that we have no idea about because we've been here for most of last year! So we roped in a bunch of other extranjeros and Ecuadorian friends, to share in our love ... read more

It was a grueling 37hrs to reach Quito, yikes and to think I need to do that trip twice more when I return to NZ in March. Although I was rather shattered on arrival I managed to book a trip the following day, and thank goodness I did because it was a real highlight. It was a trip to the Otavalo markets, very famous market of the region. My private tour guide was from Belgium had been living in Quito for many years and very widely traveled so we had much to chat about. We stop at various places; Calderon to see little hand made figures, the side of the road to try some local fruit called Chirimoya, and at Cayamge to try a local biscuit (Bizcochos) eaten with cheese, they were piping hot from the ... read more

Hola gente -- I am nearing the end of my stay in Ecuador, and am going to try to put up some of the nicer pictures that have been sitting around in my camera. Hard to believe, but these here are a month old… Most are from Cajas National Park and Cuenca, about 10 hours south of Quito. (Seems like just about everywhere in Ecuador is either 2 hours or 10 hours from Quito.) I’d gone to Cuenca for the city’s independence day festivities, but didn’t really end up seeing them… a group of people I knew from Quito also happened to be there and we ended up going to Ingapirca, Incan ruins a little ways outside of the city. The ruins were OK (it’s always hard for me to imagine where people cooked, slept, made ... read more

I am in Cuenca at the moment, we arrived here at 5 this morning via another uncomfortable all night bus ride that was so cold i had to sneak the seat cover off and get in it. Our last day in Baños we decided to go for a hike, so we took a taxi out of the city to a bridge, where the taxi driver tried for 10 minutes to talk us out of walking there, but we insisted, and then we didnt have enough small cash to pay him what he asked for, so we cut him a dollar short. :(. We were now in the mountians surrounding baños, which are in the clouds, and where the only people you see arnt hikers but rather farmers who have plots of land on the side of ... read more

Travel-warp, I'm lost in South America, a few months of Europe and friends and family and a new continent beckons. Ecuador is a country of so much variety, from the Galapagos Islands, Coastal Lowlands, Andean Highlands and the densely jungled interior. It reminds me so much of Guatemala, a country I came to love four years ago, similar experiences; a month spent relearning pigeon Spanish, nights out in salsa-tecas, food of rice and chicken and eggs, guacamole and cheap cuba libres. The differences from Guatemala are subtle, Ecuador doesn't have the history of CIA interference and bloody conflict with guerilla groups, Ecuador has a history of political corruption and war with Peru, contracting borders and then the bonanza of discovered oil. Oil at a time of unprecedented demand and rising prices should have made Ecuador a ... read more

Hello Everyone, I am writing to update you on our last little adventure, which we spent in the nearby town of Cuenca. The city is about five hours away-a very visually dynamic bus ride. Cuenca is about the same size as Loja, and is centered around a large, ornate cathedral. This week is the celebration of Cuenca's independence (Nov.1-3), and we are planning to return to enjoy the fiesta (which we've heard is incredible and quite squirrelly). Cuenca has incredible, delicate architecture and elegant plazas with gardens juxtaposed with modern office buildings with tinted windows. One of the parks is used solely for runners and walkers (it even has a stone statue of a runner), the first evidence of encouraged exercise that we have found since we've visited South America. The city hosts many foreigners, and ... read more

What an adventure it has been. Stevie and I have travelled from Quito, the capitol of Ecuador, out to the coast, and down into the southern highlands of Ecuador. After having my camera stolen the third day of our trip, we finally found a nice new one here in this lovely city, so the blog is back in action. How different Cuenca is from anywhere else we've been so far. Beautiful colonial architecture, we're talking wrought iron balconies, domed churches, colorful windows and houses, marble floors and columns just to get started. Every few blocks there was another lovely botanical park with statues and fountains. The people were some of the nicest we've met so far, eager to help us out with whatever we might need. And the food, oh the comida, you could get just ... read more
