Los Angeles is an urban jungle located in Southern California city which is the center of the nation’s film and television industry, a location which when traveled can give you the unique experience and excitement when you visit the iconic Hollywood sign
, or the behind-the-scenes tours of Universal and Warner Brothers and Paramount Pictures studio.
If you are looking for a travel itinerary, then this is not the right article for you as I would suggest you visit hundred other blogs who will provide you with a list of places to visit in Los Angeles.
I am here to talk about the important tips to remember to have a successful and safe solo travel in Los Angeles based on my personal experience.
1. Drink Bottled Water
This goes without saying that in foreign countries you should always consume bottled water but in Los Angeles
, it is essential to consume only bottled water as the tap water has lots of traces of minerals which is not good for your health hence even the locals buy filtered water to drink.
2. It’s a Land for All Picky Dieters:
Food is another factor which travelers worry about as each
individual has different eating preferences. Well, you have nothing to worry about as Los Angeles can offer meals for all sorts of diets and dieters- vegetarian, kosher, gluten-free, raw, etc. Whatever you wish to eat, mostly you will find a place which serves it in this city.
3. 99 Cent Stores in All You Need:
You may want to buy a few things from grocery stores nearby. While there are many options available, the cheapest of all would be the 99 cent stores where you will find almost everything you need, stocked up. Not just grocery but you will find all your toiletries and stationery needs available here as well.
4. Adequately Moisturize:
Los Angeles is actually a desert city; therefore, the sun is too intense. Your body tends to lose moisture faster than you can anticipate hence do carry a large bottle of moisturizer or else you will end up with crocodile skin. An additional tip would be not to forget your sunglasses.
5. Keep Yourself Updated About Smog Alerts:
Smog is almost a daily occurrence in Los Angeles hence you will find that the cars get dirty real quick and the city
has an ample number of car wash stations. Stay aware of weather conditions
and avoid outdoor activities if the smog alert is high.
6. Finding Restrooms:
As a female, this is an essential question which I prefer to know about before my travels. The usual protocol you can follow is to use restrooms of McDonald's, Starbucks or any other local restaurants. There are also great apps available on Google Play-Store which are absolutely free and can help you find local restrooms in your location.
7. Car is the King in Los Angeles:
The most convenient way to travel across the different landmarks is via the roads and freeways driving a car or hiring one. In fact, the locals use their cars to go literally everywhere hence you may face traffic congestions. Install Google maps
and track the traffic before you start your trip.
There is public transport available of course but then your travel may not be hassle-free, and you will need a bit of patience to reach from one place to another. If you are traveling solo, I would suggest just hire taxi services or better rent a car. You need to be thorough with your
inspection about the company you are renting your car from. Make sure you read previous customer reviews and check the company's rating. For e.g. I rented a car from Under 21 car rental in Los Angeles
which had really high ratings and I had a wonderful and hassle-free experience.
8. Budget Stays in Los Angeles:
It is not easy to find cheap hotels in Los Angeles. Hence, do a thorough search online to find a budget hotel. Read the reviews carefully so that you do not land up in a shady hotel. If you have the budget, do stay in top hotels near the Hollywood strip
and you will have a once in a lifetime experience. If you do not have the budget, then you can stay in the outskirts of Los Angeles and drive to the locations you wish to visit. At last, the most economical and good experience would be to find a decent AirBnB. Just make sure you read all previous customer reviews as not all AirBnB are up to the mark. Final Thoughts- Safety Tips for Solo Travelers:
Los Angeles is a pretty safe place to visit if you are street smart. Make sure to follow fundamental safety rules like locking your car and your room door. Staying in decent areas of the city and being distant from unsafe neighborhoods. If you follow these basic safety rules, you are going to have a blast as a solo traveler in Los Angeles- the city of angels.
