Public health is soooo last year, smoking is the new thing on everyone's lips - though a strawberry nargileh beats Big n Hairys every time......d'you think there'd be a demand for this in Maryhill?? Perhaps not..... We bumped into this magnificent blue-eyed boy adorning a keyboard in a Sony shop in Hama, the owner had just closed for the evening but after much window banging he finally relented and afforded us some quality time with 'Nice' - not the most catchy of names but nevertheless a rather appropriate moniker for such a fine specimen - without doubt one of the highlights of the trip thus far! Crusader castles are dotted all across the western part of Syria and Krak des Chevaliers is the most complete remnant from those bloody days of conquest and pillage; TE Lawrence ... read more

Second blog from Syria. Coincidentally, also from Damascus, however in the intervening time I have been all over Syria. No pictures as yet, those will have to wait until I can get to a country that does not have internet censoring. It's very annoying. So anyway, cities I have been to include Damascus, Aleppo, Hama, and Palmyra. This was with a tour group, and while travelling around Syria I am sure would be quite possible as an independant traveller, I think it would also be very lonely. In my week in Syria I have seen almost no other travellers, despite the fact that in places like Aleppo we stayed in the same hotel that is the top ranked backpacker hotel in lonely planet, yet there was still no one there. My assumption is that a great ... read more

My first blog from the Syrian Arab Republic! The good news is that I am here and established in Damascus. The bad news is that I don't seem to be able to access my hotmail account. I am unclear if it's just a local problem with this cafe, or if access to the hotmail website is blocked across Syria. We shall see. In the meantime, I can't get to my e-mails, so anyone who is trying to contact me may have troubles for the next week until I get to Jordan. So, to pick up from the last blog, I was in Antalya, and after a 15 hour bus ride I made it to Antakya, the closest Turkish city to the Syrian border. After investigating the bus connections there, I realized the connections were much smoother ... read more

Left Jordan and entered into GW Bush's "axis of evil", but apart from thousands of Hezbollah posters haven't seen much sign of evil!! After travelling the road to Damascas...thankfully not becoming blind in the process, we spent the afternoon exploring the maze of laneways in the old city. Damascas is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world and has some facinating places to see. We visited the mosque which is one of the top 5 most important to Muslims. Then we went to wander around the old palace, very modest but still cool. Wandered around the Christian quarter and it was interesting to see the change. All the women were wearing western clothes and it wasn't really crazy like the rest of the city. Plus there was the occassional bottle-o. Caught a cab ... read more

This prequel to the Ancient World Tour will cover Scott adventures highlights include: Following Lawrence’s footsteps in Damascus; Running the Syrian / Lebanon border on the eve of the cease fire; Learning to navigate without Hel; Visiting the crusader castle Krak des Chevaliers; and Watching the sun rise over the desert ruins in Palmyra. Damascus, Syria 16 August 2006 I arrived in Damascus on 16th August, for two weeks travelling through Syria. I travelled exclusively on local buses which are an excellent way to get around. The Syrian bus system is extensive, efficient and cheap. All towns and cities have a central bus stations, the language is not a problem, lonely planet guided have the names of towns and cities in both Arabic and English is simply a matter of showing the ticket salesperson the destination ... read more

I have a little bit of time waiting for friends so I decided to write a quick entry. I've had classes for about a week now and I must say they are very difficult. Some stuff is easy but even when I know most of the things it is still challenging. There is no English spoken unless we are just thoroughly confused. I think this is the best way to learn a language but when your vocabulary is as limited as ours it can sometimes lead to guessing what a word means and guessing wrong. Hasn't been a real problem so far but I could see it being one. We started the colloquial (Ammeah) yesterday and had 2 hours of it. WOW is it different than the Fus Hah (Modern Standard Arabic) that we were taught ... read more

I did more exploring the past few days. Thursday evening I went to the Citadel and the Ummayed Mosque around sunset. I got some good pics, some of which I'll post. The Citadel isn't all that impressive but the Mosque is just awe-inspiring. It is enormous and so beautiful. Words really cannot explain is and pictures don't really do it justice either. But, for those of you who can't make the trip to see it on your own I took lots to show you. Thursday night we also had a small get together and had some fun listening to music and the like. Friday was a pretty dead day. Most of my friends went to Aleppo but I wasn't exactly invited. Oh well. I slept in and lounged around all day. Saturday I decided that I ... read more

It's about 3pm now but I figured I might as well make an entry since I might not get back to a computer tonight. This morning I went to orientation at the university and met my teachers. They seemed nice but we didn't really get to talk to them. School starts tomorrow and is 9-1 and then usually several hours of homework. After orientation was done Erin, Joe (Yusif), and myself went for a walk to the souks. We walked for a couple of hours through some but not even all of the souks. The two I know we went in were the Textile Souk, where you can buy just about any clothes you would ever want, and the Hamidia (sp?) Souk which is the enormous one that you can get anything in. We had some ... read more

Well I have now been here a few days and can safely say that I love it! I have been having a blast all day every day exploring and learning sooo much!!! I'll recap the last few days as best I can in the time I have. Unfortunately I am having trouble uploading pictures so those will have to come later. As I said in my first entry, I arrived local time on Thursday and got to my hotel around 10pm. I wandered around for a few hours with a new friend I met named Mina who is in my program. I got to bed around 3am and fell right to sleep. I was awoken by a knock at my door at 7:30am and it was Mina asking why I had overslept and I was like ... read more

I finally made it to Syria later on last night! I got settled into my hotel and went and wandered with my new friend Samina I met from Georgetown. We had lots of fun and even managed to get into a little bit of trouble. Nothing to major but i already have stories for years to come and I've been here less than 24 hours! It's great fun and the heat isn't as bad as I thought but I am drinking more water than I thought I'd need to. Oh well. Sorry this is so short, I have lots of exploring to do but I am here and I am safe and having lots of fun! I will post again soon and hopefully I'll put pictures up as well. Hope everyone is doing well, feel free ... read more
