Sleepy in Palmyra Middle East » Syria » Palmira By ana_be_goodMay 16th 2007Ana So then it has been way too long since I've last written. For that I apologize. And umm we might as well forget about pictures for now, it is just impossible to organize everything. It feels like I've lived out of a pack forever. Our massive yellow Oasis truck is great. We have our own lil storage space and live out of our day packs for a few days before delving into the locker to get more stuff...so if you think I didn't have much clothes with me...now I live off of 2 shirts and 2 pants. Even my skirts do not work here... Syria is beautiful. So is Turkye...again, y... read more

While the mercury’s been steadily climbing in Damascus - it’s a hazy 95 on the day I skip town - a heat wave is hardly the time to visit the desert. But it’s my grave misfortune that Palmyra - the legendary sandstone city and so-called “Bride of the Desert” - was plopped down about 100 miles from the ass-crack of Nowhere. It’s on the wrong side of 100 when my bus pulls into town; even the shifty cab driver who greets me at the station seems too exhausted to rip me off. The city barely stirs in the mid-afternoon heat. The shopkeepers are sitting out front in the shade, spitting date pits onto the sidewalk; the restaurant touts half-heartedly call out to passersby, wiping their foreheads against their sleeves. At my hotel the desk clerk ... read more

Hello Hello I set of from London on April 23rd to Turkey and joined in on a 35day overland tour from Istambul to Cairo. Fun eh! I'm having a blast and Loved Turkey. My Favourite place was Goreme which was so interesting with all the Farry Chimney's. All the Local shop owners kept offering us apple tea so we would come in for a chat...and maybe buy something. Fi (one of he girls on tour) stoped into one and he was born in one of the caves. He was funny "i am cave man" he said. Next on the Favourite list was Galipoli for ANZAC day. The New Zealand Service was very moving and I'm so glad I got there for it. Third favourite place was Olympos and after several long driving days it was ... read more

On behalf of myself I’d like to welcome you once again to the source of your insanity. Prelude These past two days have brought me very close to death… in more ways than one. Firstly, I kept seeing a blinding white light… but we were in the desert and I could hear voices so I reasoned that I wasn’t dead yet. The reason was that we walked for hours and hours around various sites on very little sleep and after a long bus ride. Chapter 1 - Palmyra On Friday morning I was aroused by the alarm I had set for 6:30 and spent the next two and a half hours waiting for Masumi to get out of bed. We were going to be taking a two day trip as she’d sequestered a short holiday ... read more

Okay, you're gonna be seeıgn a lot of typos ın thıs one... that,s because Turkısh keyboards suck ass. There,s an ¨ı¨ın the i posıtıon (between U and O) but ıt,s some form of unıquely Turkısh ı, unsuıtable to us fussy Westerners. Instead there,s a second i key to the rıght of what would be a semı-colon,ö but ıs ın fact a ş. Except capıtal I ıs stıll back on the Turkısh I. Full stop ıs one key to the rıght, comma ıs rıght of the 2nd i (next to the shrunken Enter key), apostrophe ıs Alt+2, @ ıs Alt+q, etc etc. Just know that for all the errors youire seeıng here, Iim stıll hıttıng backspace about 6-8 tımes a sentence to clean up worse errors! Okay, Syrıa. Interestıng place. The fırst thıng we notıced ıs ... read more

Yesterday was a very, very long but very, very fun day. My morning started at 5:30am when I got up and packed for the long day ahead. I headed out the door at about 6am and met some friends and we took a cab to the university. The bus pulled out of the parking lot at about 7am and headed for Sedeyna. Sedeyna is a town outside of Damascus with a beautiufl church and I forget the story but there was a miracle that happened there. I believe. After that we headed for nearby Ma'alula. Ma'alula is one of the only remaining towns that still speaks the language of Jesus Christ, Aramaic. It was very pretty and I took some nice pictures. The language was interesting to hear and I got an audio recording of a ... read more
