Well not exactly, but… We did get to go to a football game. Fourth down and two, ball is on the 43 and BAM! The quarterback is sacked, end of game… 13 to 3… The Minnesota Vikings whooped on the Indianapolis Colts but good! Honestly now folks, this team of 13 soldiers with me here at lovely Camp Atterbury has been here for about 19 days without any time to relax, put their feet up or take a breathe that didn’t have something to do with paperwork, moving supplies or planning for our enormous influx of soldiers here in Indiana. Our schedules have dictated a 5:30 am wake-up, with a exercise plan for us all, the days have been filled with the chaos of meeting soldier administrative needs, picking people up at the airport, driving forklifts ... read more

I suppose that since this is a “Travel Blog” I must do a little traveling. So the other day on one of my little adventures, my partner and I decided to venture outside the gates of Camp Atterbury. Okay, it wasn’t far but it was well worth the 10 minute drive. Following the small non-distinct signs along the roadways we found ourselves on dirt roads, traveling through a camp ground and then driving along past a small local fishing hole. Our destination… The Camp Atterbury POW Chapel. Or better known as the “The Chapel in the Meadow,” a small chapel the Italian prisoners had built in 1942. As history tells us that in 1942, Italian soldiers who were fighting the war in North Africa were extremely outnumbered by the British and American soldiers and because their ... read more

Usually it is the cadences of the deep voiced men as they run in formations down the roads of the military post. Then the sound of diesel trucks idling high at the stop signs, occasionally revering their engines as they grind the gears of the big beasts, and finally the scuffing of the boots in the gravel as the soldiers march to the messhall for their breakfast of biscuits and gravy, fruit and eggs cooked to order. This is normal, and the slogan, “The Army does more before 6:00 than most ... read more

If you have never been to Camp Atterbury before you have missed the simple beauties of Indiana. The trees are spectacular; green lush leafs cling to the branches providing shade and creating a sense that you are out in the wilderness camping with your family. The lawn is vibrant and full, caching the early morning dew and feeding off the moisture all day long. It stays wet because it is so dang humid here! Although the temperatures have only been in the 80’s (they have had record daytime lows since we arrived), those of us from North Dakota have felt the intense effects of what true humidity is really all about. Strength zapping, sweat provoking and hair flattening! Camp Atterbury is a typical National Guard training post. There is a gym that is stocked with exercise ... read more
