You’re on holiday and having the time of your life, far from home and all of the troubles that you were more than ready to leave behind you – and then something happens. Sometimes it is a trip or a fall, in other cases it’s a type of food that you were not expecting. For some people it’s a jolt in a car, or a jump that you didn’t quite make. However, it happens, there is no denying that you’ve hurt your mouth, and it feels like you are going to need to have some emergency dental care whilst you are on your vacation. But what sort of emergency dental care is it possible to get while you are hundreds of miles away from home?
It may seem crazy, but in many cases, you can actually receive treatment that is almost the same as you would have normally received from your typical dentist. There are many places around the world where the dental care is the same, if not better, than ours back home, and if you are in an area like that then you do not even have to think about worrying. On the other hand, there are some areas that are a little backward in their approach to dentistry, and so you may find that a local dentist may not have all of the tools that you typically expect, or the techniques that you are accustomed to, such as quick hygiene cleans, or painless fillings.
In many cases though you do not have much of a choice. Something has happened to force you to an emergency dentist wherever you are, and you do not have the luxury of being able to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’! Some of the different dental treatments that you could be offered by an emergency dental whilst you are on holiday include:
1. Emergency cap
If a part of your tooth has been chipped off, from eating something too hard or by hitting it against something accidentally, then the best thing is to take the chip (if you can find it) to the emergency dentist, and ask them to put on an emergency cap. This will seal the chip onto your tooth for now, and should last long enough until you get home and see your regular dentist.
2. Painless filling
If some decay has burst or been discovered only while you are away on holiday, then an emergency dentist may have no other choice but to perform a filling right there and then, but don’t worry – you may not have to sit there in agony. It is perfectly possible to give a patient a completely painless filling
, and this painless filling will not be any more complicated than a normal one.
3. Quick clean
Sometimes there is nothing that an emergency dental can do immediately, and so the best thing for you, the patient, is to keep everything clean and healthy for when you are able to get back home and see your normal dentist. This will involve a quick clean, and ensuring that there is nothing left in your mouth that is going to damage your health.
If you end up with a painless filling that you have won the emergency dental lottery, and there’s no need to worry about your visit to an emergency dentist whilst on your vacation. They will do absolutely everything in their power to make sure that your teeth and gums are kept as healthy as possible, and you may find that you prefer their treatment methods over your normal dentist – just don’t tell your one from home!
