We have a confession to make, we thought Sri Lanka would be the perfect destination for a relaxing first few weeks on the beach, it has been...but it has also been so much more. History, religion, food, geography, people - each has surprised us and reinforced how much we underestimated this country. We spent a little over three weeks touring just the south west and central highlands. After an 18 hour journey from London via Singapore (don't ask, restrictions of a round the world ticket) we found ourselves in Colombo, then followed a hair-raising introduction to the ways of the Sri Lankan roads, within 20 minutes our taxi driver was negotiating a speeding fine with the police. We spent a couple of nights in the capital and then caught the train to the south coast. It ... read more

First, a little background: Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, is a small island off the southeast coast of India. Its people are mostly Buddhist, but also Hindu and Muslim; they mostly plant tea or make apparel to earn a living. The Singhalese, mostly Buddhist and the Tamils, mostly Hindu had been engaged on-and-off in a civil war until last year. During the conflict, the Tigers, a Tamil guerrilla group, perfected suicide bombings throughout Sri Lanka to carry out their fight for independence in Tamil-dominated areas of the island. Now, a cease-fire has been signed, and there is widespread optimism on both sides that there will be peace, and this nation of 18 million people will be able to prosper. In Sri Lanka, elephants are used as horses or mules are elsewhere, and they can pop ... read more

The kidnapping in Colombo !!!!! On the 1st of January 2003, I was driving back from Negombo to Colombo with my mum, sisters and Maggie amma (a person who was employed by my parents when my sister Imara was one month old in 1984). I am writing this on the 24th of December 2007 and she still lives with us, she has been promoted to our 2nd mother status long time ago hence all of us refer to her as “Amma”. At about 1am on the 2nd of Jan, I was on Baseline road near the Borella junction. I had just passed the Dematagoda prison. I had the cycle bazaar on my left hand side and the Srina Palace (textile shop) along with another row of shops on my right. In the middle of the road ... read more

Even for me, am-student-have-no-money, a trip to Sri Lanka was a totally luxury treat for just a few pounds a day. To have my own driver and stay in 5 stars hotel... True paradise with azure seas, sandy beaches, green hills, cascading waterfalls, abundant wildlife, a riot of flowers and fruits, coconut groves, spice gardens, tea estates, … great food, 5 o'clock tea, ayurveda massage, sea, sun... In 3 weeks I’ve been to Hikkaduwa - Mirissa - Matara - Tangalla - Rekawa - Hambantota - Mawalli - Arugam Bay - Nuwara Eliya - Kandy - Aluvihara - Sigiriya - Pollonaruwa - Nilaveli - Trincomalee - Dambulla - Negombo. Nestling off the southern tip of India, the tropical island of Sri Lanka has fascinated travellers for centuries with its palm-fringed beaches, diverse landscapes and historical monuments. his is going back a few years, well 6 to be exactish. It all started after I joined the San Diego cricket club back in 99. I was quickly promoted the the first XI where I was a bit of an all rounder. Only being 18, I was by far the youngest in the team. The others players were a mixture of Indians, Englishmen, West Indians, Zimbabwians and of course me. I was playing a game up in Burbank at Woodley where I had a fairly solid knock of 35. I was spotted by some scouts who recommended me to play in the upcoming U19 cricket world cup in Sri Lanka. The rest is all history. http://www.cricinfo.com/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/1999-2000/OTHERS+ICC/U19-WC2000/SQUADS/U19-WC2000_AMERICAS-SQUAD.html I was flown into Colombo at the beginning of January 2000. I was picked up by some guy with ... read more
