Kahden ja puolen vuoden takaisen tsunamikatastrofin jalkeen Acehin paakaupunki nayttaa nousevan uuteen kukoistukseen. Kaupunki on todella siistin ja modernin oloinen. Rakennustyot jatkuvat. Nimenomaan taalla maanjaristykset aiheuttavat erityisen karmivia tunteita. Heti hotelliin asetuttuamme alkoi mandialtaan vedenpinta heilua itsestaan. Syy selvisi myohemmin uutisista. Jaavan lahella oli ollut 7,5 Richerin jaristys samaan aikaan...... read more

Tulipahan rytyytettya oikein kunnolla!

Jopa punaiset vesipostit olivat klassista USA-kamaa! Ko. alueelta ei tarvinnut poistua ulkopuoliseen indonesialaiseen todellisuuteen, vaan kaupat, ravintolat, sairaalat ja koulut kuuluivat pakettiin. Tosin omaa yliopistoa siella ei ollut... Pekanbarusta matka suuntautuikin sitten takaisin Payakumbuhiin. Pitka mutkitteleva oinen automatka, perilla vasta klo 02 yolla... ... read more

Ystavien luona Payakumbuhissa saimme syodaksemme, kuinkas muuten, herkullisen tulista aidin laittamaa rendangia, joka tunnetusti on perheemme ehdottomia suosikkiruokia. Nam! Rumah Gadang Sungai Beringin on laheinen perinnetalo, jossa vietetaan erilaisia juhlia. Haajuhlapaikkana talo on erityisen suosittu. Muutama tuttukin toivoo sita kovasti omaksi haapaikakseen lahitulevaisuudessa. Toivottavasti paasemme silloin paikalle juhlavieraiden joukkoon. Matkaseurueellemme jarjestettiin tilaisuus kokeilla lansisumatralaisia perinnevaatteita paikan paalla. Hauskaa, mutta hikista puuhaa! Pidin myos elamani ensimmaisen virallisen puheen indonesian kielella! Payakumbuhin 49:sta peruskoulusta rankinglistojen mukaan parhaan SD Pius -nimisen ala-asteen sisapihalla vietettiin ensin perinteista jokamaanantaista lippuseremoniaa, jonka paatteeksi puhuin mikrofonin avulla sadoille oppilaille ja koulun... read more

We had spent our night in Georgetown, Malaysia just chillin out as we didnt want to go anywhere as we didnt really like it all that much when we were out in the early evening, plus very tired still from the train the night before as we only slept for few hours. The next morning, the 10th july we got car to ferry terminal, we waited for check in and once it opened the Malaysians who are known for jumping queue's and bumping whoever they need to to get them out of the way lived up to their reputation, me and Laura were almost thrown from the queue by them, luckily we are pretty big lasses so never even got moved a centimetre! We got checked in and boarded the ferry which was pretty big, ... read more

what a bloody crazy adventure sumatra has been! a far cry from the ho-hum of the cities, the moment we arrived on indo soil it's been go, go, go! waking at 5am, we began our epic journey from singapore to lake toba, a 25 hr non-stop journey consisting of 1 train, 3 ferries & 5 busses. from singapore we took a short ferry to pulau batam, our first indo port where we were to collect visas, change cash and run to the next ferry port to catch the last daily ferry, all in about 15mins. apparantly nobody's ever made it and lived to tell the tale... we had crazy men running alongside us to hurry us up and lead us to the port, ruairi shot off ahead and i was trailing behind fast. mind you, ... read more

“In the heart of a smoking mountain” Indonesia - the largest archipelago in the world....and an undiscovered treasure trove of adventure, mystery and natural beauty. Being an Indian, i am a seeker of these things in my travel...it is not so much the sights as the stories associated to each place that grab my attention and imagination. A chance, unplanned trip to Berastagi, also known as Brastagi turned out to be just the place that fueled it. Berastagi is a cozy hill station just two hours from Medan - the commercial capital of North Sumatera, Indonesia. It is a step sister of sorts to the much hyped tourist destination of Danau Toba, more popularly known as Lake Toba. Berastagi was meant to be a one night stop over on my way to Lake Toba. I ... read more

Ok, so its been a while but that’s really down to where we’ve been more than anything - Indonesia-net is as fast paced as the lifestyle there, if existent at all (apart from Bali of course)! After the Thai islands we ended up in George Town on Penang, Malaysia. This was unplanned and we didn’t like it that much so we quickly headed for Singapore. Singapore is a really picturesque city with a great nightlife; unfortunately outside of China Town it’s also very expensive so our stay was short. It was a luxury coach ride up to Kuala Lumpur with massaging seats, before flying to Medan in North Sumatra, Indonesia. KL wasn’t to my liking really, it’s OK as far as big cities go but apart from the Petronas Towers I didn’t find it that special. ... read more

It was probably a sign of the times and we didn't want to find fault with our hotels - after all, we were staying at the cheaper end of the market and there were precious few visitors around. But the fact was, there were often times when we felt that someone ought to be paying us to stay in them - not the other way around. Despite our best efforts to find something that would redeem our hotel in Bukit Lawang, it was the bed bugs and extremely smelly toilet (that blocked regularly and could only be emptied by tipping a bucketful of water down it each time we needed to flush) that finally drove us away. Of course, the "Wisma Sibayak" had not escaped damage from the flood that ripped through Bukit Lawang in 2003 ... read more
