Flatmates FleeI returned to a quiet house. The lights off, the rain eased; released its muffling embrace, relaxed its hypnotic drum, a bass beat upon the roof slowed to an ebb of tap, tap, tap falling from the leaves and eaves. A jet plane had vanished early Sunday morning into the cloud cover taking with it two EF teachers, my flat mates, Mick and Kelly. "They've made a runner," Don passes me a note. Mick's handwriting requests that Don inform management after Mick and kelly've had a day or two to get away. The words 'misinformed' and 'disappointed' emerge more than once. I've been gone all weekend with Eddy, scooting around Madura, checking out village markets and quiet beaches, old cemeteries and majestic sand dunes. Mick and Kelly had trouble just crossing the street. BabiesKeisha took ... read more

GWM looking for the right guy in the wrong town Few of the young men resemble their profile pics. In a crowded mall the far side of the city our protagonist meets with one such man. He’s a good two feet shorter than expected and still dressed in his drab brown work uniform. “Sales Executive” refers to his new job selling light fixtures at a householdware department store. He earns an equivalent to one hundred dollars a month, a quarter of which covers room and board. The Internet chatrooms spliced with memories of National Geographic presented Indonesia with a false sense of the romantic, images of men who, strong and smooth and brown, strode perpetually half naked and virile across wet rice paddies. And while this is true of distant figures spied from the highway that ... read more

Heroes: Tragic and Comic This could be Rotterdam or anywhere, chilling in a shopping mall coffee shop half the temperature that bathes the city outside its sliding glass doors guarded by a pair of goons in blue and white pressed uniforms, until you take a closer look. The products and prices are western, made in China, Korea, Japan, western as it’s come to be known, lipsticks, yoga mats, silk blouses, skin creams, cappucinnos, handbags, donuts. The shoppers are Chinese, an affluent minority constituting roughly a fifth of Surabaya, the highest density of Chinese in the country. Many of them live in concrete mansions towering above the floodline, drive luxury sedans and tinted SUVs, employ a half dozen housekeepers, a cook, a driver, a gardener, wander the air-conditioned mall in their best clothes, eat western food and ... read more

Selamat pagi from Indonesia. Arrived here 11.30 Tuesday night after 32 hours travelling and 5 different flights. We were feeling a bit shattered and sweaty from the journey, but what came next threw away any lethargy. The place we are living and working in is amazing---but amazing. We were shown out of our taxis and entered the building , which is like a sort of Marriot’s hotel. My jaw just dropped in disbelief—I will try and get a photo later. The apartment is unbelievable---really classy , with 2 big bedrooms, both en-suite and a guest toilet, massive salon , very tastefully furnished, large entrance hall, big kitchen and laundry area and storage space everywhere + a maid’s room (+ 5 air conditioning units). All this is hotel serviced (beds, cleaning etc) and it is included in ... read more

There’s not so much to say about the last two days. The weekend when I was plan to travel to many places. To join a test and visit my hometown Surabaya, to meet my colleagues in Jakarta, and to spend holiday in Bandung which I never visited before. Everything was well planed and booked, until the heavy rain and flood come. Heavy rain which happened since Thursday, Jan 31st 2008 at Jakarta caused flood in some places including the main road to Jakarta’s Airport. On Friday afternoon, the Jakarta’s airport was closed to all flight due to heavy rain and flood at the airport. Many fights from and to Jakarta are delayed or canceled. This situation impacted to national flight schedule. On Friday, I was on a trip from Denpasar to Surabaya. My flight normally board ... read more

Flew very cheaply from Singpore to Surabaya - north east Java. practically no other tourists on journey there but it felt fine. from the start, local people were amazingly friendly & helpful - really good feeling about the place & i felt at home right away. Hostels of the dorm kind don't seem to exist here - just private rooms with private mandi (basically a toilet with a hose pipe thing as a shower in the same room - great tho, as no sharing needed). really busy & hectic city - continually buzzing. quite amazing amount of traffic - roads a never-ending rush of cars, motorbikes, becaks (rickshaws), food & fruit sellers on bikes, all coming from everywhere going all over the place with no real system. almost impossible to walk across, despite the traffic lights ... read more

Allright, I'm out of Bali and I'm recharged to do some hardcore travelling again. But we needed to extend our tourist visas, which means we would have to fly to Singapore and back....or does it? We got a phone number from this American guy we met. He said he'd called a guy who has a shoe in at immigration and got his appropriate (and somewhat illegal) extension without leaving the country. Ok, it was cheaper than flying and the American guy said it was legit. Rhiannon and I felt like a boneheads as we watched that little brown man cruise off on his motorbike with our passports and about 400 bucks. "I'll drop them off at your hotel in 3 or 4 days", he said. I was confident that it was all cool, and after 4 ... read more
