Hi everyone Mel here!!! This is the first time I've blogged since we've been here.....we have a few days to catch up on because we've been so busy and in our spare time we've been too tired to blog! On our last day of the tour in New York we started off by doing a TV and movie tour. We got to see so many locations from shows and movies. My favourite was the buildings from FRIENDS :) After the tour finished Tim went off to do a beer tour and I had lunch and did some shopping with my new friend Priscilla. That night we went to a place called Dallas BBQ for tea! The cocktails there were lethal!!!!!! We ended the night by going up the Empire State Building. The views were absolutely incredible ... read more

Another season on the ice. This season I was able to come down during Winfly, arriving the 10th of August and departing about the 3rd week in February. I love this job The big event for me this year was my one week of building cargo at CTAM-Central Trans Antarctica Mountains. Please copy and paste the below link into your address bar for more information. http://antarcticsun.usap.gov/features/contenthandler.cfm?id=2398 A large storm delayed my departure in late February 2011 by a few days. We had parts of the Ross Ice Shelf break away along with many of the pressure ridges near Scott Base. http://antarcticsun.usap.gov/features/contenthandler.cfm?id=2371 Please copy and paste the below link into your address bar for to see a satellite photo of the open water as of Feb 26th. To save money I was able to find a short term sublet with a young shared house. I was sharing with 2 girls and 2 boys, they took me under their wing and I joined in on their movie nights, bike trips to the beach and shops, headed to a bar for live music. It was fun to keep busy in-between job and longer term accommodation hunting. Vancouver was hosting Celebration of Light festival, where Canada, china and Spain competed firework displays to music. For the Canadian entry I met up with the girl from the whistler tour. We grabbed a coffee as we sat out on kitsilano beach watching the great display. Afterwards I met up with some of the work people I met at my interview and was able to try my first Vancouver ... read more

(apologies as this was actually posted Dec 28.11--I had not updated so now getting back on track!) My third winter on the Ice, we had a station population of 151, later 149 due to emergency medical evac of personel (they are now fine!) Lots and Lots of snow, oddly enough not that frequent in Antarctica; and some good *& kicking polar storms. But also much warmer than normal winters-this makes for rough weather. Sadly 3 Norweigian sailors were lost nearby in our first storm of winter, the crew of the Berzerk 2. Winter on the Ice is alot of solitude, reflection and close alliances with your fellow winter -overs. We work very hard, long hours but enjoy our free time, as we are alone for 6 months. yep, internet and tv we have, but the nearest ... read more

We flew into Vegas at night so we were able to see the bright lights of the strip below and marvel at our home for a few nights. Our friend from home, Dave joined us in Vegas. To try give him a good start, we organised for a limo to take us to the stratosphere hotel from the airport once we picked him up. Through the jet lag, he appeared overwhelmed but impressed and pulled through to go exploring. We enjoyed wondering around seeing the different hotels; watching acrobats in Circus Circus, being spun around on the New York, New York rollercoaster, seeing the Treasure Island pirate show. One evening we went to the old Vegas strip, Freemont St and soaked in the atmosphere. We watched the video ceiling offer a 80's music montage and listened ... read more

After enjoying two dubbed Steven Segal films (from Steven Segal vol.1 DVD collection) on our bus ride, we arrived in Lima to be greeted by Jane at the hostel. Our hostel was based in Miraflores, the rich area of the city by the coast. We took a walk down to the bay (the sea smell & pier reminded us of Brighton) and had dinner in a shopping mall based on the cliff edge. As we were all tired we finished the evening with a cinema trip, watching Solitary Man. Unfortunately I would not recommend it. Walking tour We joined a free walking tour which was based in the centre of the city. The architecture and feel in the centre is very different to the area we're staying. We learnt about the history of the city & ... read more
