The Acropolis
We did get to see at least the outside. Easter Weekend meant all tours closed! We arrived back in Athens after our short trip around the Peloponnese with plans for a quiet night and then up early for our tour of the Acropolis. We decided to go back to the Hera Hotel as it was comfortable and was within walking distance to the Acropolis. We had even upgraded our room to ensure a view of the Acropolis from our Balcony. It was therefore a surprise when the hotel clerk handed us the “keys” for the exact room we had previously stayed in. After a lengthy argument we settled into the same room where he assured us we did have a room with a view, if we stood on our toes we could see part of the Acropolis above the scaffolding on the building opposite.
Our next disappointment came when we were informed that our tour of the acropolis had not been booked due to it being a public holiday...the Acropolis was closed.
The plane trip to Munich was quite spectacular as our flight path took us along the Adriatic coast and over the Austrian Alps. We checked into the Germania Hotel in Munich and I make special mention of this in case anyone decides on a
stay in Munich. Don’t stay at the Germania. All was going ok till we were told there were no porters, not so bad you might think, the young German Frauline accompanied us to the lift and up to the first floor, she then pointed us in the direction of a hallway and said to turn at the end and our room was up the stairs....she didn’t tell us there were a further three flights of stairs. My case was almost as heavy as Annie’s, then there was another one in which we had accumulated a fair portion of duty free alcohol, and two back backs. The room was tiny, the bed ordinary and we had a view of a brick wall. Perhaps we should have complained but by the time we got our luggage to the room I wasn’t too keen on moving.
So we hit the Hofbrauhaus for some fun and a few jugs, we did have a good night, it was a lot of fun even though the food was lousy.
Next day we did a morning tour of Munich and then the time had arrived for the collection of our Mobile Home. Well, this thing is a
Giant, (after the vw anyway) 1500 ks on the Speedo, all the mod cons, looked great and after an hour or so of getting to know the ins and outs of the van we were off on our own. Now to manoeuvre our new home for the next four through the tiny streets of Italy, over the high passes of Switzerland, along the autobahns of Germany, and through the congestions of Rome and Monaco etc.....not a worry in the world.
Our first stop was sensational. Only 100 ks south of Munich on the banks of this lovely lake in a tiny town called Hopfensee, 4ks from Fusen and the Neuschwanstein Castle. We strolled around the lake, found a delightful restaurant and felt pretty good about our first night on the road.
The following morning (Sat 3rd.) we were up early for our tour of King Ludwig 111’s famous castle, Neuschwanstein . The weather has been great and our morning was spent strolling the castle and then the town of Fusen.
We continued our journey through Bavaria, the scenery was beautiful, very lush steep hills backed by snow capped mountains with tiny villages scattered here and there. We camped this night
Neuschawanstein
Castle of the mad man King Leudwick 3rd, dont think he was mad just needed an anti-depressant and to be understood ! in Garmisch Partenkirchen and the next morning continued on into Innsbruck. The drive into Innsbruck was like landing in a plane as we descended from mountains into the large valley where Innsbruck lies. The afternoon was spent exploring the city and we took the cog railway and gondola up to the highest of peaks that surround Innsbruck, the Seegrube.
Salzburg was our next stop, Annie was thrilled as we took the “Sound of Music tour” singing away as we visited the Von Trapps, checked out the “Rotunda “ and were driven out to Mondsee where Maria and the Captain were married. Well worth the trip and a lot of fun....
The afternoon we walked, and walked, and walked around the city, up to the fortress, down to the abbey, up somewhere else and finished up at a nice little restaurant for our second Weinersnitchel in as many nights. So ends this saga, So for now...auweidersen... Annie and Rob.
