Me being contemplative!
Dreaming of the journey and adventures to come I'm heading off on my travels in March 2008. I reckon a travel blog will be the best way of keepin track of my adventures as well as keeping everyone at home informed that I am still alive!
Well I guess I'll tell ya a little about me. My parents hail from Ireland and jumped the pond to go get jobs. While they were there the had a little sprog called Emma. I was born in Greenwich, London. My family lived there for nearly two years, when they decided to up sticks and move to South Africa.
We spent around twelve years in Africa, it was fantastic as a child, the good weather and a really good quality of life. Amongst my memories are eating ripe magoes from trees out the back, prickly pears on my friend's farm, black widow spiders, dung beetles rolling poo at the local horse stables and I guess most importantly...I was there for the end of the apartheit it was a really humbling experience, waiting in the lines of the voting stations, holding my mom's hand, with the queues reaching as far as the eye can see. People embracing the basic right to vote that they had not been allowed before.
After twelve years, I think the folks got homesick, as they packed up again and moved back to Ireland. That was wierd. I had always considered myself to be Irish I was always "the irish girl" in school, that was until I actually moved to Ireland, when I realised the culture was quite different to say the least. But sure I've been here 10 years now, so I have definately settled in you could say. Love it here, my only complaint would be the weather! Best thing about Ireland is "the craic" and Im not talking drugs here for anyone that hasn't had the pleasure of visiting the Emerald Isle yet! Im talking about the humour and the drunken nights out in the local! Ya just cant beat it, that's why there is an Irish Bar in nearly every country!
So I guess you could understand why I have a bit of a travel bug now, was part of the great travelling show I call my life! I have done a good bit of travelling in my own right. A few (bad) attempts at skiing, once in Finland where I tried the local cuisine - reindeer meatballs! I'm sorry Rudolf! Tried the icy persutes in Austria too, but wasn't any better!! Although I did enjoy some flamin sambucas apres ski, even if I did burn the face off myself (Warning to the kids - dont try and light sambica in your mouth when you are drunk - it just gets plain messy! - actually scrap that - dont do sambuca full stop!) Went to Vancouver in Canada to live while on a break from college. This involved myself and about ten friends living in one room, sharing airbeds for about three months, has to be done! One memory that sticks out in Canada was when I was offered chocolate covered mushrooms by a naked man on a nudist hippy beach - Kinda sums up the people for you - Lets just say they were "Awesome" haha. Didn't want to leave the place! Also did a stint around Europe, highlights include hazy games of Snap(yes the card game) in Amsterdam coffee shops, getting lost after a few to many shots of Absenth in Prague and precariously captaining my own boat around the beautiful Beaches near Hvar.
So Im off on the next chapter of my adventures! I can't wait. The loose itinarary at the moment is: Gonna start in Japan, visit my friend Suzanne who has been living there for the past year. Then I reckon I am gonna go to China, it has always been on my wish list! After that think I will head to Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Will make my way to Australia eventually, not sure how yet, where I plan to take full advantage ahem I mean visit people I know out there! Shoutout to Zoe & Luke who I met in Prague! Jon and hopefully the crew from Ireland who will hopefully have a couch for me to crash on by then! After that Im gonna head to New Zealand, which I have heard great things about, maybe live there for a while and refuel/earn some money. Gonna need some money because I plan to go to South America next and wanna go trekking around the place, so much to see and so little time!
Well thats it anyway! Will keep you all posted on my lead up to the trip and of course my adventures when I eventually get on the road! If anyone has any tips/advice, I would appreciate it!
The path must be visited regularly for unused paths soon become choked up with weeds"
