POURING rain
Here's what we were faced with when we came up from underground on the Metro. Ann here -- today was so "eventful", it requires two blog entries! The title of this blog entry is the way we felt by the afternoon. We sure miss the weather back home in California! We'd take 109 degree weather anyday!! As you know from the previous blog entry, we went on a tour of the White House this morning... we wore slacks on the tour so we had to go back to our hotel to change... we were back on our way at noon... the weather in the morning was super hot and humid but it didn't look like rain (so, it didn't occur to us to bring our umbrellas)... when we got above ground from the Metro back in DC, it was POURING (see photos)... what happened next (and all day) is what Phil would refer to as a "mid-course correction"... we had to steer away from the plan in my little notebook and wing it... we decided to make a run for it over to the Old Post Office building and grab lunch to (hopefully) wait the storm out. Well, that worked great.... just enough time for the rain to stop... not wanting to tempt fate too
Vietnam Memorial
Had to rush through, as it was raining. Many families looking for loved ones names. much, we purchase two $5 umbrellas... if you're keeping track, this is the 2nd and 3rd $5 umbrellas we've purchased on this trip... the 1st one was in Little Italy in NYC on July 4th... anyway... we decide to stick with our plan and go see the monuments on the Mall... starting with the WWII Memorial... here is where things start to unravel... it starts pouring again... I mean REALLY pouring with thunder and lightening overhead... we, along with 50+ others duck under one of the arches of the WWII memorial (with our 2 umbrellas)... well, the arch and umbrellas didn't really help, as the wind was now whipping... needless to say, we all got SOAKED! The rain started to let up a bit so we decided (since we were already soaked - and now much cooler) to forge on... the kids took it all in stride and skipped in the puddles... quite a great sight to see ... we made our way to the Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Tidal Basin, and Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial... we (I) thought about walking around the Tidal Basin to the Jefferson Memorial... but cooler heads (Rich) prevailed and we opted
Lincoln Memorial
Stepped into the Lincoln Memorial for a quick photo op and to get out of the rain for a bit. for taking a photo of the Jefferson Memorial instead... the rain was starting again (at 4:15ish)... sometimes you just can't ride all of the rides 😊 ... we make our way back to the Metro station by the Smithsonians and head back to the hotel... stopping on the way for some dinner (Baja Fresh)... felt great to get out of the soaked clothes and into a warm shower. Our shoes sit outside our hotel room and our wet clothes are in the sink... you get the picture.
We've had another mid-course correction and are opting not to go to Gettysburg, PA tomorrow. We're going to stick around DC and hit the Smithsonians, Capital, and Library of Congress (that's the plan at the moment anyway 😊 ). It's suppose to start raining at 3pm tomorrow, so we want to plan indoor sites.
Hope you're all doing well. xoxoxo, Ann
