Beescow Family

Inspired by our friend Tina (aka, HolaT), we decided to create this travel blog to post photos / adventures from our upcoming trip to NY / DC. This will be our first cross country family trip. Should have some fun stories to report. Hard to believe, but Katherine graduated from high school this past May. We figured we should get a nice family trip in before she heads to UC Santa Cruz in the fall.

We'll be spending 11 days with my oldest brother (Phil) and his wife (Mary) in Stamford, CT. They have graciously opened their home to us. They're great hosts/hostess', so I know we will have a great time! I've been guests of theirs in the past (winter of 1979, summer of 1980, summer of 1987) and I can tell you I have (30 years later) very fond memories of those trips!

On to the trip planning... we'll take daily trips into Manhattan with Phil. Hopefully Mary will be able to join us on some of our shopping sprees. Katherine has so much to learn from her. 😊 Should be fun to be in NYC during the 4th of July! I was going resist daily itineraries, but (as most of you know) I don't function that way. Yes, Phil Wowak, I do have a binder full of our travel plans! 😊

From Connecticut, we'll head to DC for a week of history lessons. We'll visit with Mary's family in College Park, Maryland. See blog entry below for places we hope to see.

(Note: our profile photo is a bit dated at this point (2004), but I couldn't resist. It's my favorite family photo that Tina captured while we were out to dinner in Marina Del Rey).

First full day in NYC - Rich, Ann, Katherine, David, Paige, & Joe We met Elieen at Rockefeller Plaza. One of my favorite starting places in the city. While the kids went up to the Top of the Rock to view Manhattan from the observation deck, Rich and I had drinks at the Rockefeller Rink bar. They loved the view from the Top of the Rock! We wondered around Rockefeller Plaza a bit, getting our bearings. We caffed up at one of the busiest Starbucks we encountered in the city. The Starbucks at 30 Rockefeller Plaza (down in the concourse) is so busy that they have a dedicated Starbucks employee that just calls names and distributes drinks. Not sure if it's to keep order or to keep people from stealing each others drinks. ;) A "must ... read more

Today is the first day of our amazing trip - heading East to attend Steve and Brie's wedding. 12 of us are fortunate to be able to make the trip and share in their big day. Eileen forged off our her own and took the red-eye out of Sacramento early this morning. Grandma Borba, Rich, Ann, Katherine, David, Paige, and Joe departed from Sac Airport at 8:30am. We have the best friends in the world! Maria Parish offered to take this whole mottly crew in her surburban to the airport (at our house at 5:40am). It seriously felt like a scene from Home Alone... we thought for sure we were going to forget someone. :) Trip through Philidelphia and on into LaGuardia was uneventful. Landed in NY at 6:30pm. We were of course greeted at the ... read more

Ann here -- okay, so Katherine has called me on this! I keep saying how I need to wrap this vacation blog up with a final entry... she says I'm not doing it, as I don't want the trip to "end". She's right! If I make this entry, then that makes it final... our amazing trip is over, vacation is over, back to the day-to-day reality of work. Well, our trip has been "over" for two months now, but we talk about it often... laugh about it often... and cherish the endless memories... many of them noted right here in this travel blog. But, with all things in life, we must move on! We recoiled... ending our trip as it had started... at the bike shop! We had to kiss Phil's new bike goodbye before heading ... read more

Ann here -- Another one of those days that required two blog entries.... we left Anne's at 4:15pm headed for Baltimore... Phil put this wild thought into Rich and David's head the week before... the Orioles were playing at home on 7/13 at 7:05pm... Phil thought it would be cool for David and Rich to say they had been to Camden Yards.... plus, it really did make alot of sense... wait out the Friday night traffic while catching a game. True to all of the other tips Phil provided us, it was an AWESOME idea! It was a fast game against the White Sox. We had made the plan in the beginning to leave by 9pm... we left at the top of the 8th inning... Orioles leading 2-0 on two solo homers... remember our Yankees ... read more

Ann here -- it's not as fun blogging after the fact, but the last three days of the trip were too hectic to try to keep up with the blogging. In the interest of getting all of our notes down, I'm adding them now so we can read this later to refresh our memories. It certainly isn't as much fun blogging now that we're back home and I must return back to work tomorrow... bummer for sure... although, we all had a PHENOMENIAL time on our vacation, we were ready to get home and back into our routine. We checked out of the hotel on Thursday, July 12th... one day earlier than we had expected as Anne and Bill insisted we stay the night with them. As it turned out, that was an AWESOME idea! ... read more

Ann here -- okay, we're not sure how people can survive in this weather! Hotter then hot, add in humidity, then (for the fun of it) rain like crazy in the afternoon. We were spoiled by the weather in NY. While we were there, we had 80 degree weather with no humidity to speak of. Everyday makes us totally appreciate the weather back home. Todays weather actually wasn't that bad... it wasn't as hot as it was on Monday... and (although it rained) we did not get caught in it. Today we hit The Mall - not the shopping mall, but the Washington, DC Mall - we visited two of the Smithsonians - (1) the National Museum of American History. Nice overall museum, but, after spending a few hours at the Metropolian Museum of Art ... read more

Ann here -- today was so "eventful", it requires two blog entries! The title of this blog entry is the way we felt by the afternoon. We sure miss the weather back home in California! We'd take 109 degree weather anyday!! As you know from the previous blog entry, we went on a tour of the White House this morning... we wore slacks on the tour so we had to go back to our hotel to change... we were back on our way at noon... the weather in the morning was super hot and humid but it didn't look like rain (so, it didn't occur to us to bring our umbrellas)... when we got above ground from the Metro back in DC, it was POURING (see photos)... what happened next (and all day) is what ... read more

Ann here -- After traveling through six states (Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia) we made it safely to DC. Travelling on the east coast is a bit bizarre... one can travel through numerous states in the matter of a couple hours... there are tons of tolls, bridges, and tunnels... our favorite part is that there aren't any billboards lining the parkways (can't call them freeways, as they aren't free :) ).... the other part we really liked are the service areas... they're so easy to get on and off of to get gas, food, restroom. We sure miss our tour guide Phil! He has more energy and enthusiasm than most. We rented a car bright and early this morning and headed for Baltimore. I wanted the family to see the Inner ... read more

Ann here -- a trip would not be complete without losing something... lost my cell phone on the train somewhere between here and Manhattan on the evening of the 4th (after the fireworks)... I've had the "pleasure" of learning how the lost and found works... actually, Phil and Mary knew (from experience) how it worked... everything that's left on the train is boxed up and sent to Grand Central Terminal. I reported it missing on the morning of the 5th... Phil is going to be the Dear brother that he is and attempt to find it next week in the box of cell phones at Grand Central... 1 in x shot of finding it, but we're feeling pretty lucky since the whole Rush ticket thing. So, the point of this blog entry is to let you ... read more

Ann here -- the title for this entry about sums the weekend up. Mary, Katherine, and I went to the Westchester Mall in White Plains, NY yesterday to do a bit more shopping ('cuz 5 days in NYC wasn't enough ;) ). Anyway, the mall is huge and beautiful. It's much like the Roseville Galleria back home... but, about 3 times bigger... and the shops are like many of the ones you would see in NYC (Tiffany & Co., Dooney & Bouke, Gucci, etc). The shops in NYC tend to be crowded and in disarray... except for some of the high-end shops we went in with Mary (Saks, Cole Haan, etc)... it was nice to shop in a more quiet setting. As my mom called it in one of her blog comments... Phil & Mary ... read more
