Myself and my daughter (8) are going to Germany in about 3 weeks and are overwhelemed with the endless choices of gorgeous places to visit, if anyone can offer any suggestions they would be very much appreciated. I am trying to research as much as I can but every time I look at a new site or a forum somethign else exciting pops up to grab my attention and add to the list!

Also which is the best way to go? Come in from France to Munich and work our way up to Berlin perhaps, then go from there to Prague?

Considerations:

* We will be travelling from Bayeux in France on 30th April and then leaving Germany to go to Prague on the 14th May (so will be in Germany for 14 nights/15 days)

* We will be using only public transport (buses, trains, flights) as we will not have a car (if anyone has a decent 3/4/5 day coach tour of any areas to recommend we would consider this)

* We want to see mainly beautiful little villages, spectacular castles, gardens, mountains, picturesque rivers etc. The "fairytale Germany". Particulary interested in the romantic road area, Fussen, Rothburg ob der Tauber, Heidelberg and my daughter wants to go to Legoland in Gunzburg. We'd be interested in seeing Berlin also.

Thanks!
K

If you'd like to see a picturesque smaller German town then head over to Görlitz, which is on the German-Poland border. I've been there about 5 times over the years and I've seen it transform into a beautiful place. It's set on a river, has wonderful architecture, a stunning cathedral, and has a number of cool hidden parks. It's a good day trip from Dresden or Leipzig, but you can do it from Berlin if you go by train and then travel on to somewhere else. There are tons of buses and rail that travel there, too, so it's not difficult to get to. Other than that I recommend Cologne and Berlin. Reply to this

Hello K 😊

Since you are feeling overwhelmed by so much choice I would let where you go depend on the availability of flight and train bargains.

If you do fly into Munich then consider the Bavaria day pass. It is valid from 6AM on the day purchased to 6AM the next morning. One ticket covers 5 adults and a bunch of kids. You cant take the fast trains with this pass but you can go anywhere in Bavaria you want with it. There are lots of nice towns in Bavaria to visit but I particularly recommend that you go to the ones in the mountains. It takes only an hour or two to get there from the centre of Munich. Try the Zug Spitze. That is a peak where there are feet of snow at all times of the year. That should thrill your 8 year old. I took my daughter there one June. The only disadvantage is that you cant get up there with the regular train. You have to take a special train or a cable car and that costs a bit. I think it was around 40 Euros per person when I was there.

In case you dont think about it, it wont be warm on the Zug Spitze even if it is Summer temperatures at lower levels so bring something warm to wear up there.
There is a warm cafe to sit inside but for playing in the snow......
