Any suggestions?
18 years ago, August 3rd 2005 No: 1 Msg: #2390
I will be making my first trip outside of the U.S. to Salamanca, Spain from October thru December. I am clueless as far as what to see, where to go, what to do, etc. I will be with a study abroad group from California. So far, I've read some journals about Spain and Europe and it sounds wonderful! (Thanks to some of you writers.) I am anxious about what's to come and hope that I enjoy it as much, or even more, as some of you. If anyone has any suggestions for me, even traveling tips, I would greatly appreciate it. Daily costs to travel, eat, have fun, country hop... and what are the best ways to do some of these. Any info will be accepted. Thanks!! Reply to this

I read your message and will try to join some information in the next days and post it to you.

First of all check out Ryanair's site:

www.ryanair.com/site/EN/

The closest city from Salamanca where Ryanair operates is Valladolid, 150 Kms (about 100 miles) northeast. From there you can fly to London or Brussels. I strongly recommend you a weekend in London -or longer if you can- because it is quite different from Spain, you can speak english (you'll feel comfortable) and its an absolute must see in Europe. The city is huge but really lovely. Brits are not well known for their politeness with tourists but whenever I've been there I always found them really helpful and nice to me.

I´ve checked out prices for November- it is low low season- and found: Return ticket Valladolid-London-Valladolid (out Nov. 10th back Nov. 14th)
35.39 Euros (about 45$), taxes included-I think there's an extra charge of 6 E for visa payment-. But book in advance. Check yourself other possibilities.

About Salamanca I cannot tell you much since I live 600 miles from there. I've only been there once. But I´m sure you'll enjoy it because its beautiful and full of students. In fact there are 3 cities in Spain (Salamanca, Santiago and Granada) where you can find this combination: relative small town-big university which results in loads of student bars, pubs, parties etc.

Other nice towns/cities to see (within 200 miles): Burgos, Segovia, Toledo, Madrid, Porto and Lisbon(Portugal)-recomended-.

A bit further (300 miles) but really nice: Santiago, San Sebastian.

Even further (>400 miles) but probably the most famous/touristic places in Spain are Barcelona and Andalucía (the southern region of Spain). If you can manage to have some extra time and get there you won't regret it.

My Europe top 5: Rome, London, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Paris. See what you can do.

Even though now Euro value is higher than US dollar I think you'll find Spain a bit cheaper than USA. And absolutely cheaper than the rest of Europe (except maybe Portugal). Here you are some prices: (1 E=1.24 US$)

1 beer: 1.2 E
1 Cinema: 5 E
1 coffe: 1 E
1 diner out: 7 to 25 E
1 Madrid-Salamanca bus ride: 12 E
1 trousers(jeans): 20-80 E
1 h. internet: 1.5 E
1 spanish dictionary: priceless

And I'm sure that, as it happens in Granada, you'll find in Salamanca student places under these prices.

By the way, Salamanca in winter can get really cold. Anyway the coldest months are January and Feb. so you wont suffer them.

I hope I've been of some help. Gus
