Yes, I'm back out in the world. This time it's a work trip! CRAZY! There were some bumps and bruises to get settled in that's for sure. But, now we are all in our rooms and happy to have finished a long, overnight red-eye flight and mishaps at the car rental counter. I do need to say that Puerto Rico is not cheap! Flying here was expensive... everything has been expensive! But, I guess normally I'm only paying for and watching out for myself - not a group of 5. Sokay! We're here! Today we stomped around Viejo San Juan. It is gorgeous! The lights are up for Christmas, the people are so friendly, AND I am practicing my spanish... sort of. I'm understanding most of what's being said and answering in English. Everyone here speaks ... read more
March 23-28, 2009. Participated in the Alternative Spring Break 2009 with SJSU students and staff for one week in Mexicali, Mexico to join the local communities in developing their schools, farms, and bee hives! DAY 1: We flew down to SD from SJC then were picked up from the friendly Los Ninos volunteers, David and Chloe. We loaded our luggage in a white pick up and packed ourselves into a 13 passenger van. The trip from SD to the Calexico-Mexicali border took about 2.5 hours. Crossing the border was very quick. I was unimpressed by the event because I had imagined there would be more people trying to get through, thus creating a longer wait time. However, we drove through without even stopping. The first night, we relaxed and were introduced to Alonzo who is a ... read more
back at hostel bekuo. last night jenna and i attempted to drive up the volcano but were unsuccessful due to a flat rear tire. this morning we left arenal backpackers to head back down to san jose. now here, i am preparing for my return flight while jenna attempts to change her's so that she can stay another week. costa rica is a wonderful place. the people are very friendly and you feel a sense of community when you are here. they really go the extra mile for the visitors here during tours by adding more than you thought you had paid for. all the little surprises are a joy and cause you to fall in love with the country. i would love to come back here and visit some of the same places but add ... read more
hey all. we stayed in paquero last night due to the storm that hit. we didnt' feel comfortable getting back on the ferry with that weather. we stayed at a place called cabinas margaritas, though margarita was not in last night. during the day, jenna and i left puntarenas by ferry to paquera. our goal was to drive to playa santa teresa because we heard it was beautiful. our detour to islas tortugas offered an irreplaceable experience. we met up with three other travellers: first was "kit" but we call him christopher because that's his birth name. he's from california originally but is currently working in boston at Harvard. the other two, gary and pam, are from scotland. the three joined us and our capitan juan on a boat ride to the islands and then to ... read more

We landed in San Jose around 2pm and rented a Montero Sport with Dollar Rental. The road were fairly easy to navigate through with heavy traffice. When we arrived in the city of San Jose, we quickly realized that there were no street signs anywhere and our GPS system was traveling faster than us. We tried our hardest to keep up but fell about 15 blocks or so behind our guide. To make a long story short, we resorted to using just a street map that was attached to one of my guide books in order to find our way around. The costa ricans do not have addresses: they use landmarks.... It took us roughly 4 hours to get from the Juan Santamaria airport to the Bekuo Hostel in the San Pedro neighborhood of San Jose. ... read more
Jenna and I will be traveling to Costa Rica in just 3 days! This was a last minute, spur of the moment trip. Either of us had any intentions on going, but when the airfare went down as low as it did, we decided to buy... and so we're off! My understanding is that it might not be possible to load pictures while I'm out there. I will definitely do it when I come back if that's the case. I will do my best to blog every other day if possible. I'm not sure what it will be like since, hopefully, we'll be out in the jungle ;)... read more
June 7th From Agios Nikolaos, we boarded a ferry to Santorini's port, Ormos Athinios. The boat's constant side-to-side sway gave me a drunk feeling. Many times I tripped over the metal lips that joined the doorways of the ship halfway to falling on my face. I hadn't been on a boat this large before and my anxiety was very high. The longer we were on board, the more my fears were regurgitated. It took me at least half of the ride to calm myself, thought the ill feeling was ever present. The time was around 10pm upon our arrival. Still feeling nauseous from the ride and the excessive meal before boarding, I stumbled out of the cargo gate quickly attacked by hostel workers and cab drivers. All attempting to seduce us towards there hostel with ... read more
This morning I felt it was important to have a morning alone. I left the pension around 8am and called Brian and kelli. It was good to hear familiar voices. Nothing was opened yet after finishing my phone calles so I took a walk around the lake and port to capture undisturbed images. Morning is best for light and privacy. Many photos would later be filled by tourists, locals, and autos. Upon booking ferry tickets to Santornin, we spoke briefly with the agent. The computers were down and we were unable to reserve our return trip so would again have to return. HE said that unfortunately he would be here tomorrow, working, going nowhere. I didn't think to ask, at that time, where he would want to go. I think I will when we go ... read more
