How to take pictures?
17 years ago, March 22nd 2007 No: 1 Msg: #12173
Hey there,

This is my first time here in travelblog. How are you doing guys?

My first travel alone experience was fabulous! I went to Istanbul and I just don't want to leave. I like the idea of traveling alone so much but I have a problem asking people to take my photos. I have a digital camera, sometimes I am afraid people will steal it (hehehe) but most of the time people just dont know how to take pictures.

Can I have advices what is the best way to take my own picture? I mean my whole body; I know how to take my own pictures but I'm tired of just seeing my faces so big. Do I need tripod?

Thanks! Reply to this

honestly when you travel by yourself, you do run the risk of having crappy pictures taken of you because people don't know how to use cameras.
stick to other tourists, and they'll be happy to take a picture of you if you do the same.
I think a tripod would do the trick but it would be a pain to lug that around, set it up, make sure you have it set up the right way just to get a picture of yourself. I think setting that up in a busy area makes that more of a target for getting your camera stolen than if you just get a quick picture. Reply to this

I don't think I'm the only one to have a series of "self-taken" shots from around the world... you know the ones where you stretch out an arm and snap away 😊

The other tourist advice from Laura is good, there are lots of willing volunteers around at most destinations. Reply to this

Just to add to this one, I tend to ask other tourists who are sporting nice looking cameras and/or people who seem to be a little bit creative in taking a shot (such as shifting angles). In any event, I sometimes request to the person taking my photograph as to whether they could put my head near the top of the picture. This avoids the common problem of having an unusally large amount of space above your head, at the expense of cutting off half of your body. Reply to this

Attacking tourists is always the best idea however keen some locals might seem to be to try out your camera! My luckiest break was at Machu Picchu when we wanted all of us in a group shot - I managed to find another English tourist who had exactly the same camera as me so no worries about getting a bad photo! I carry a small tripod for those times it's just me and nature. However, it's good for group photos that you want to get into as well. Reply to this

Be careful who you give your camera to - you don't want anyone running off with it. For the most part there will always be other travellers around you. Doesn't matter where they are from, holding out your camera, pointing to yourself and smiling seems to be a universal language!!! Reply to this
