Kiwi's are voting on a new flag, and have chosen a round one winner and very nice it is too!
BBC Report
I really hope it does become New Zealand's new flag, or something similar. Seems much more representative of the country and people I saw back in 2003.
What do you think?
Reply to this I'm one of those Kiwis who voted in that first binding referendum, and I did vote for the flag above out of the five options.
I'm still undecided which way I will go in the second referendum next year - but I felt that should the flag change, I at least wanted a say in which it would change to. There was a decent number who were asking people to either not vote first time round, or to invalidate their voting paper by ranking all the same, crossing them all out etc.
The preliminary winner doesn't surprise me - from the general talk and social media 'campaigns' that was the one which seemed to have the most support. All five flags have been flown recently at a number of public buildings in the country, to enable them to be seen in action. In official arenas all five were supposed to be given equal exposure, and for the most part they were. In the private sector it was game on, and of those that chose to fly their chosen flag 'Red Peak' was most visible.
The timing - intended as a TPPA distraction? The cost for the referendum process alone - more than 25 million NZD.
If the flag does change, are we going to see you back down this way again Ali? ;-)
Reply to this Says something about how multicultural NZ is, with the official explanation of all the flag options being available on the government site (above) in 26 languages.
Reply to this I like it.
Great to see the 5 alternatives.
Fingers crossed Australia will follow our Kiwi brothers & sisters and allow us to vote for our new flag sooner rather than later.

The Long List shows how hard the final selection must have been. I liked the fern on a black background as it's a NZ image well known. But when it's your national flag...not so easy.
Reply to this How would you have voted?
Here's your chance to unofficially have your say. Rate the options from 1 - 6, with 6 being your preferred choice and 1 being your least favourite. We'll keep the polling booth open until about a week before the official second referendum in March.

Reply to this It's interesting to see red peak being at or near the bottom in all your choices. It was given so much media coverage. The fern is already a well known symbol of nz so incorporating it into a flag does mean it will be recognised quickly. I'm torn though. While a new flag that is unique to here would be good, it's all taking a lot of money that this little country could be spending on more important things. I am glad though that we all get our say.

Jo,
Was the Silver Fern (Black and White) in the final voting?
If it was a TB vote. it would have romped in!
Real worry for the future of a change to Australia's flag that New Zealanders voted their existing flag to stay.
Reply to this The one at the top of the thread was the flag the current one was up against.
The first referendum was to decide if the flag was changed, which one it would change to. Then it became a two horse race.
Reply to this The vote was much closer than I expected given early opinion. A lot of people did seem to warm later to the idea of changing it.
