What are some interesting, scary or just generally bad stories you have from air travel?

I'm thinking of worse case stories of air travel as we near our 30 odd hours of flying with a 2 year old and a 5 year old..... what are your bad stories? and they dont need to involve toddlers 😊 Reply to this

I was thinking my worse experience on an aeroplane would be a flight from Bend Oregon to LAX beside a man that must have been over 200kg. He politely asked if he could raise the arm rest between us so that he could have more room and i politely agreed (and didnt really think about it). However, his entire leg/stomach area then rested against me for the 2 hour flight and it was sooooooo disgusting. I was squished in my chair and i couldnt even put my table down as his belly was in the way.

My apologies to anyone who is quite large but this was really uncomfortable for the person sitting beside them who was on flight 1 of 4 flights to get back to perth australia. Reply to this

And i just asked my hubby what his is and he said a flight we did from London to Dublin where the turbelance was very very bad. The plane shook for a good 1/2 hr before we landed and the lady across the aisle from us vomitted all over the floor. When we landed we bounced heaps and when we finally came to a stop everyone on the plane clapped. Reply to this

Love a good air travel story. Am slightly addicted to those shows that depict the disaster and then show how it has helped avoid future troubles! Generally, I have only experienced the usual turbulence but loved it when we were stuck at Hong Kong for many hours due to typhoons and the only planes that would fly were Cathay Pacific. I think, fortunately, we were flying with a Vietnamese carrier.
Anyway, my favourite flight was from London to Dublin. My friend and I had been upgraded (for all of half an hour or so!) and when we disembarked and were waiting at the carousel, airport staff were questioning passengers about their health. Didn't think much of it until everybody on that flight was taken to a 'special room' and we all had to wait there for a few hours because somebody had coughed or something. Later we found out that it was an Indian family from an area where the plague had started again...aaaaahhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!! We had to leave contact details and if there was a sniffle or cough in the next few days had to go to hospital ASAP. Fantastic! Reply to this

I remember landing in Taiwan once during a typhoon. They had only just opened the airport the day before. The British pilot announced that if the landing becomes too treacherous, then they would abort the landing at which time the engines would be "very loud" in order to regain altitude. I think what allowed the landing was that the wind was blowing along the runway, I somehow doubt we would have landed if it had been a crosswind.

Considering the conditions, the landing was quite smooth, but there was still a lot of buffeting as we were descending.

I was stuck on the tarmac for three hours at JFK in New York City once. This airport is notorious for delays during the summer thanks to thunderstorms, and sure enough one hit while I was there. Instead of doing the semi-humane thing and let us stay in the terminal with food vendors, space to walk around, etc. the airline put us on the plane under the theory that a jet on the tarmac would be more likely authorized to take off. Well, we ended up at the back of a huge line containing over two dozen planes! Just over three hours later, after the storm had cleared, we finally got to leave. That delay almost doubled my flight time. Worse than the actual wait was the psychological torture of being trapped in a tight space with no idea of when it would end. When the US DOT announced its regulations about the maximum time a plane can stay on the ground (coincidently three hours), quickly eliminating such practices, I celebrated. Reply to this

On a flight back from somewhere in America to London the captain announces "we are having a problem with our landing gear, we'll be coming in (some high amount of speed which I can't remember) faster than usual. Don't panic, we have practiced this in training. Also, heathrow have a very long runway so we should be fine. But just in case, we have contacted London fire brigade who will be waiting on the runway"

Nikki is a very nervous flyer, she was almost in tears, I was almost in tears of laughter at her & the situation. Reply to this
