We'll be travelling from Brisbane to Cairns between 2 and 18 September 2010 and are about to hire a car. Do you think a Toyota Corolla will do, or do we need a small SUV?
My husband and I will be travelling from Brisbane to Cairns between 2 and 18 September this year. We are not going into the outback, just travelling along the coast and visiting the national parks. Our itinerary looks more or less like this: Brisbane - Fraser Coast - Eungella National Park - Airlie Beach - Magnetic Island - Mission Beach - Cairns.
We are about to hire a car. Do you think a Toyota Corolla will do, or do we need a small SUV?
Reply to this Hello Aga and Misiek, I have driven this road several times and it is paved the whole way, so you would be fine without a SUV. If you need to head to Fraser Island, it might be best to organise a separate car once in Hervey Bay or go with a driver as the extra expense of a SUV when compared to a Corolla for two weeks will be quite significant.
Also, avoid hiring a vehicle from an airport - as there is an extra tax charged on all airport hires which will add to your cost quite a lot. If possible hire a car from the Brisbane CBD/Downtown (just take a train there from the airport - it is only 20 minutes).
Reply to this Dear Travel Camel,
thank you very much! We will do as you suggest. As for Fraser Island, we are going on an organised one-day tour, so there will be no problem.
Best,
Agnieszka
