Hello there, im an 18 year old male and Im traveling to australia from bedfordshire, england at end off september on a working holiday visa.

Im just looking for useful hints of what to do, where to go, etc etc. im a lone traveler and if anyone wants to come with me, id more then appriciate it. haha

the main things i would like to know about is :

bank accounts, how easy is it to set up an account in australia? as i dont want to be charged loads every time im taking money out.

youth hostels, are these friendly environment, do you meet fellow travellers often?

where is the best places to go and visit? im starting off in sydney, and got some family friends to meet in melborne, but thats all i have planned, where are good places to go?

is it easy to pick up work around? i hopefully planning to work in the agricultural side of things for atleast 3 months, to gain another years working visa, is this work easy to pick up?

and finally, i play rugby and would be looking to play rugby out in aus? are the teams willing to take on players that might be flicking in and out?

i know there is alot of questions there, but i just need to get a few things sorted for when i go. Any answers, suggestions or even pointers would be greatly apreicated

Hey Daz, exciting trip planned! I can help you on a few things...

youth hostels, are these friendly environment, do you meet fellow travellers often?
Yes all the time! You find your room and may end up meeting ppl in the room, at the bar, at check-in, etc...its all about being social and putting yourself out there!

where is the best places to go and visit? im starting off in sydney, and got some family friends to meet in melborne, but thats all i have planned, where are good places to go?

you have to get out of the cities and into the outback. grab a camper - take it on the great ocean road, or do an east-coast roadtrip (melbourne to cairns). airlie beach, on the east coast is AMAZING... you can go sailing on the beautiful whitsunday islands and there are awesome packages out there. a lot of ppl don't make it to the west coast, but I live in a stunning place called Broome (north-west of Oz). best time to get here would be between april - september. other favourites: byron bay, noosa, perth, uluru (cannot miss the big rock!!), margaret river region. good video to watch (bris to cairns roadtrip -

is it easy to pick up work around? i hopefully planning to work in the agricultural side of things for atleast 3 months, to gain another years working visa, is this work easy to pick up? yes seems to be. check out www.gumtree.com and click on 'australia' and look through the jobs advertised in various cities.

and finally, i play rugby and would be looking to play rugby out in aus? are the teams willing to take on players that might be flicking in and out?
i'd say so, its worth googling a few rugby clubs (depends on where you're living, NSW and QLD have the best rugby reputation)...Wests Rugby in Brisbane are a good club.

cheers for the reply, very helpful. i just cant wait to get out there now.

the trip down the east coast seams like a good idea, and will do that hopefully.

also with the rugby, im hopefully going to be back in sydney or melborne by the time the season starts, but if the rugby doesnt work out, its not the end of the world

cheers again for your help.

oh and p.s to anyone else heading out to australia to travel around this time, drop me a mail at and maybe we can sort something out together, so we are not on our own

Don't bother with Rugby in Melbourne. It's apparently big in Sydney but in Melbourne we're all about AFL. Reply to this

Hi..Daz, Wel come 2 my Australia,.Ur search is d good places to go.
I can give u some ideas on few things....

They r belong 2 beach, romantic places & memorable place etc...

Firstly The Best Beach - Tea Tree Bay in Noosa is small and family friendly. It's a gently shelving sandy beach with very few rocks. You can reach it easily through the National Park. It's very popular with surfers and there are publice facilities there too..There are a few rocks to clamber over to get from the trail to the sand, but they are not large ∧ the water is often wonderfully calm

Secondly The Romantic places - Sunrise Beach on the when it’s deserted. Although popular with surfers first thing in the mornings, this beautiful sandy beach is vast enough for there to be plenty of room for everyone and still feel as though you have to yourselves.

Thirdly Memorable place - Australia Zoo - it's got over 100- native and exotic species and one Crocoseum! The whole place is devoted to the education of visitors and conservation of all the species it cares for. You can get up close and personal with some of the animals there, such as the koalas and you can even roam freely with the kangaroos in their paddock.

For work you should try Drilling companies in Western Australia. It is hard ,isolated ,dirty work but pays between $220 and $400 a day + expenses.Companies are always looking for new workers and if you want to overstay your visa these companies will often sponser you to remain in the country. The whole mining industry is good work but drilling is the easiest to get into.
Also remember that without sponsership you are only allowed to work for 1 employer no longer than 3months.If you stay with 1 job longer than this come tax time you can be kicked out of Australia and may be banned from returning for 3years Reply to this

Maybe if you can head up the west coast of Australia.... more remote more amazing scenery but more difficult.. The east coast is easy to travel and I am sure you will have know troubles down there and of course it is the main tourist drag, I just done this one month ago...

But Australia is the outback and the west for unspoilt scenery.. And the high north of course.. But check the time of year to go to these places, or even QLD.. In summer it is hot! Mostly the humidity is what will get you exp around Dec/Feb... Maybe down south for summer and north for winter? Even winter in the north is from 8min 20-30 max

Rugby, Melbourne is ok but mostly AFL there. From Sydney north you will have no problems finding a club! It is everywhere! Reply to this

Bank accounts are very straight forward to set up in Australia - I set up a westpac account in no time, you might need an address to set up the account tho !

I also used the following site to make transactions reccomended by a friend really great site where you can see real time what exchange rate you will be getting and better than the banks
